We must institute the Texas Foreign Legion for these fine fellows.  Once you serve, your past it wiped out and a new Texas identity will be created for you...

Let's see, we got Bubba, Cleatus, Billy Bob, Jim Bob, Earl Bob...

SNAITF checking in...I'm still here!

Currently in Harris County (spit after you read that), land of HOAs and linedancers (but we have great gunshows and a growing number of riflemen -  :D ).

Hope to make the August Davilla shoot - if my work schedule cooperates.

I would love to make Canon City AS II Rich, I LIKE COLORADO CHILI!

Unfortunately I have to be at work (small staff) the Thursday before and the Monday morning after and no travel arrangements available to me can accomodate that requirement.

I believe Sleepy Joe is going to DRIVE up to help with "CC AS II" and may be bringing some TX Appleseeders with him. I may send my LTR with him so I can participate vicariously.  8)

Florida Phil checking in!

I've wandered about, Mingus, Davilla, Sallisaw, Fisticuffs @ Prairie Rose, MykkaCity, and back home to Davilla, feeling kinda without a home.  But now I know why, I'm a goodwill ambassador from the Davilla Company of the Texas Foreign Legion stationed in the Green Country of NorthEastern Oklahoma.

Last stop: Davilla, June 14-15
Next stop: Yellville Ark, August 2008

Do not go to sleep without dry-firing, with at least your handgun.
See you at the Whittington Center!

We are just glad to have you aboard. If I can be of any assistance to any of you guys in getting things rolling or getting set up, please feel free to PM me or call me. I really feel like Texas is going to lead the way into the Appleseed Future. We have a lot of exciting things going on and a lot of hard working guys here in Texas helping to drive the program forward.

Having looked over your previous posts, it looks like you and I are in similar situations.

Yeah, I'm an NCO (and 53, ARNG), not an officer, but I see a LOT and when I speak, many folks listen.

Also neck deep in what I do for Uncle, and headed for SWA in a couple of years (or less).

Funny thing is, I'm not a grunt, I'm a Maintenance guy. Some of our best shooters and MG guys are Maintenance. The 2 best M2/MK19 guys in the Inf Bn I support are in my section (the Bn's opinion, as well as mine).

Words of encouragement always gratefully recieved.

Having earned those green-striped blue ribbons with the those shiny "E's" on them, I know how high the hill is to climb, and there's no sneaking around that bad boy and exgressing in good order, either.  I am going to be my own hardest critic, no matter what.

So, I'm feeling driven, and untill I get back to my comfort zone, delivering the mail consistently, I already know I'm going to be a bad example to others (since I know I can push myself).  Which, too, is an annoyance, as we clearly need to bring more into the fold, and showing them is always better than lecturing them.

As the old quote goes, Lif so shorte, the Craft so longe to learn.

The June 14 Davilla AS was my first, and definitely not my last. I will be back with several others who need to wake up and experience Appleseed.
I can't make the August AS and probably not the Sept AS, but I will be back ASAP.

I attended both the May and June shoots out at Scout's luxury resort in the sun.

Looking forward to shooting a Rifleman score in August and hoping to get some time in on the KD range.

In the mean time, I'm working to get some new shooters out there with me.

See you fine folks then.

Another newb here. I'm in Garland, Texas.
I just recently discovered Appleseed and am thinking about attending one of the events later this year.
I'll be shooting an AR/M4 so I might not be able to hit those longer ranges, but I'd rather be good with what I got rather than great with something I don't got.

So far I've soaked up a lot of the good advise on this sight and others that have improved my accuracy and groupings. Still not where I wanna be yet.

I have seen the guys with M4s here in Davilla hitting ten rounds in the torso at 400 meters no problem. I am not going to get into stopping power or anything like that. The goals is to teach you how to shoot, which you can take and apply to any rifle you pick up and use. If you learn on your M4, I can hand you my Garand and tell you the IMC for it and you can put those same principles to work smacking rounds into the target at 400 yards/meters with it.

So far I've soaked up a lot of the good advise on this sight and others that have improved my accuracy and groupings. Still not where I wanna be yet.

"Not where I want to be yet", Watchman, get used to saying that ;).  That should be the phrase that follows you into the grave. If you ever think you have learned all there is or that you have nothing left to learn or teach, think about how sad that would be?

A Rifleman never stops learning, a Rifleman never stops teaching. A rifleman continues to seek ways to improve himself, his home and family, his community, his state and his country, everyday of his life. A Rifleman adapts, a Rifleman overcomes and a Rifleman persists.

This is not just some fancy gilded rhetoric we throw around like nickles and pennies. This is the code we live by here. There is nothing wrong, no matter how often the mass of talking heads tells you it is wrong, or outdated, or corny, stupid and cavemanish, with having a code to live by in your life. Modern Americans have forgotten their code. They have forgotten how to be Americans. We are here to help them remember. ;)

There are a couple of independent (or minor chain) motels on SH 95 north in Taylor, just a smidge closer, probably cheaper.  I've driven by them a hundred times but never looked inside.  They look OK, if not fancy, from the highway.

No problem with an AK, and when you shoot Rifleman with it, we can hand you any other rifle made and you will be able to repeat it with that one. When you master your AK, it is all an easy down hill ride from there :D

I will be in El Paso that weekend opening a new location for Texas, so I am sorry I will miss you, but I will be leaving you in good hands. Alonso1 will be Sbing you and Didactic will be there also, along with some of the best of the Texas crew will be there, and Marc also, he came last month and and he will be back with the new crew he is bringing.

It should be a good bunch there and you will be surprised at how much you will enjoy it. You will meet new friends at this event, that will be with you for the rest of your life. Get ready to start leading the "Rifleman's Life", this new life will fill a hole in you that you didn't even know existed. ;)

I mounted a sling to the AK and was surprised at how steady I could hold it. I'm going to try it out at the range this weekend. Getting a good cheek weld is tough. I have long arms and feel like I have to bend my neck waay over to line up the sights.

I wish 7.7mm ammo for my Arisaka wasn't so #$%# expensive. I love the stock and action on it.

I'm also checking out PR's ride to bone up on some history. :D

I don't know what the exact turnout will be, but I do know that there will be at least 11 RWVA instructors attending per the forum schedule, some of whom are very seasoned.

This shoot is not one to miss.

I expect I will be there Friday PM as well.

Weather forecast says lows= high 30's......  highs= high 60's......AND sunny with little wind........= optimal weather for Riflery.  :)

See y'all in Davilla!

brett out.

Addendum.........there are 36 pre-registered attendees for this event, considering this, there will likely be about 40 attendees total.

Looking forward to Appleseed this Summer (2009) So that my Son and I can attend together...

Not to hijack the thread but what issues have you had with SW Airlines?  I travel frequently and havehad no real issues with the handgun(s) that I nearly always check as baggage.  Is it an issue with charging for extra luggage?  They now let you put your locking container within a larger piece of luggage.  So I have a case just big enough for weapon, magazines and ammo and place it in my normal checked suitcase.

Hi everyone.  I'm here in south Austin.  I'm the co-founder of http://www.texasguntalk.com  I only just found out about the Appleseed Project a few weeks ago and am hoping to attend some events in '09.  :)  I'll spread the word about Appleseed on my forum and hopefully we can start getting some of our people out to these events, or possibly get enough interest to maybe get some new events going in places where there aren't currently any.

Checking in from the greater Houston area.  Had a great time at my first Appleseed and look forward to attending another (maybe a bootcamp if I can get the vacation).  Sharing my experience with family members convinced 4 to go in thier states.  I bought another 10/22 and hope to bring my wife or a guest to the next one.

If anyone in the Houston area wants to get together to do some practice shoot me a PM.  ASC allows you to bring your own targets and shoot sitting and prone.

Another new member from the Dallas area here.  I have enjoyed the shooting sports most of my life, primarily bird hunting, skeet and sporting clays, and plinking with a .22.  I have recently started shooting an AR, and had the mistaken belief that it would be easy.  "The target isn't flying like a bird, it's stationary right?  This rifle shooting should be easy."  Boy was I wrong.  Peering through aperture sights and shooting well with a non-scoped rifle is proving to be a challenge.  I am ready to learn.  In the meantime, I suppose I qualify as a cook.  Don't ask what's for supper.....

G

I'll be there and it will be my 1st time at an appleseed after trying/waiting all these years for it to get close to Houston!

So College Station/Cawthorn is close enough!

I'm a noob here, just got signed up yesterday and approved today. :) ;)

I'll be using an AR15 with a 22lr conversion,I'll be bringing my wife but she has never shot a rifle before, but is good with a handgun, she'll be using a 10/22 with a newly acquired tech-sight, but gotta get her a cpl mor mags somehow! I'm gonna try and get her to the range for a crash course in rifle shooting so she will be comfortable with the 10/22.
There will be a big group of us coming but i'm the only one pre-registered unfortunately, and I can't seem to talk the others into pre-registering. >:(
Also would it be alright to use a high point 9mm carbine at the shoot, it has peep sights, our group is having a hard time getting enough guns for everybody?

Has anyone here been to Cawthorn cartridge club before?
I need to know the best route to get there coming from the Houston metro area (Galveston to be exact!).
Also what is the closest hotel/motel to the range?
I need a physical address so I can use yahoo/google maps to find the closest hotels/motels to stay at if none of you guy's/gals have any recommendations?

I'm glad to be here and so excited to finally be going to an appleseed shoot god willing everything stay's the same!

well know one has responded with any advice regarding hotels/motels for the April 18/19 AS shoot in Millican.
It seems the hotels/motels are all booked for the weekend, what is going on that weekend to make it so?

I need help from someone who knows this area soI can find lodging for the weekend, I have know camping equipment so no hotel/motel would be a bummer and likely make me cancel and lose my preregistration fee of $70!

I've been waiting and wanting for the appleseed to get close to Houston so I could take it and would be sorely disappointed if I had to cancel!

Have you tried either Bryan, TX or Brenham, TX? They are about 20-25 miles away.

Or else buy a cheap tent? Probably wouldn't be much more than a hotel room, if that.

If I where coming alone that would be easy but my wife is coming and she is getting over a serious medical condition so she won't be roughing it at all.
I wouldn't put her through that after her ordeal, I am just happy she feels up to coming at all!

Here's the deal........

For hotels, you have Navasota about 20 miles away and Bryan/College Station at about the same.  Brenham is a bit farther.  I live in College Station and it takes me about 20 minutes to drive to the DAR (Designated Appleseed Range) south of Millican.  I would recommend the Mariott in College Station or the Hampton Inn in College Station, since I know those places myself.

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/cllcy-courtyard-bryan-college-station/
http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml;jsessionid=CR02U4SLAN5KSCSGBI1MVCQ?ctyhocn=CLLTXHX

Either would be comfortable enough to accomodate any special medical considerations your wife might require.  Good beds!  Also, both are on Highway 6, which is the quickest way to get there.

Other than these cities, there are no hotels that I am aware of close to the range.

thanx guy's for your replies and advice.
I finally found a hotel in Navasota right off hwy 6, it was the last room they had too!! <:) ;)

I asked the reservation clerk why all the hotels/motels in CS, Navasota and Brenham where full and she told me that this weekend, aside from being an Appleseed event, is also the weekend of the Texas A&M parents visit  weekend event so it'll be fully loaded in all surrounding cities!!

I was wondering what was up, anyway I got a room reserved so i'll be there with my BIL and wife, if she is still feeling better.

thanx guy's.

We drove up from Houston each day as it is only a 70 mile drive.

The range is very nice and you are in for a treat.  Just realize that the only amenities are port-a-potties.  There is little shade so be prepared for sunshine.  If anyone has a shade pavilion, it would be a great thing to share.  Bring plenty of water, a lunch and quick snacks for energy.  Parking is right next to the line but the johns are a bit of a hike!  I hear the on-site camping is nice.  Check out Respiratory Pop's AAR of the March shoot - he has photos up.

Sure wish I could be out there with y'all!

Eleanor  &)  but, at least there were three port o cans.

I sure thought you and Sim would be there in CLL.  If you really miss the AS range you could mosey down to Corpus.  It is slightly more than 70 miles  ^-^ but, certainly worth it.  And, you could bring the little ones.  Roman could shoot and Mrs. POP said she would watch the three littlest.

Range owner Steve says they are located in some kind of vacuum between College Station and Navasota that just sucks the cooler air in all the time.  So, when everyone else is HOT the College Station DAR is always comfortable ... there's that 'C' word again!

Roman is on course to be Appleseed's youngest Red Hat.   O0 Keep bringing him.

Thanks, rider.  My problem with an LTR is I don't have the tech sights for it currently, and I absolutely HATE the stock sights.  My 77/22 is better set up for shooting currently though the range instructors are suggesting I bring something else.  It's just the high cost of ammo limits how much I am willing to shoot the centerfires I have.

Welcome Blacksmith, we are glad to have you. What did you think about Steve's range? He did a great job setting it up and if we can get some grass to grow on his firing line (and mine too), we will be in even better shape ;)

Are you close to Millican? If you wouldn't mind sending me your contact info by PM I would love to put you on our email list for upcoming events and get togethers. We would like to get the Texas group worked into a tight band of men who are willing to help each other and the nation.

We will be having an RBC here in Davilla starting the 8th of Nov. with an Appleseed on the 14-15. I welcome you to attend this event also and become a member of the Davilla Tx. family. This event will be the graduation event for the men attending the Rifleman Boot Camp. The attendees will be the instructors for the event and we like to have a good group for them to work with.

National Match, I am always glad to see you and whoever you drag out when you show up, I hope I see you in November ;)

VIKING chkg in!!

Rockwall County - see there's several N. Texans around!

Attended my 1st AS shoot event in College Station/Millican this past w/e 11/7 & 8.
Didn't make Rifleman, THIS TIME...but thnx to the instruction from sleepy Joe & SNAITF, I'm gonna get that patch REAL soon!

Looking forward to attending my next shoot just ASAP!
It's awesome to see & read about people who have the same fire & interest in learning more about being qualified Riflemen, learning about the history of our great nation, what it took to get these freedoms that we enjoy so much & joining efforts to continue the fight to keep these freedoms!  Looking forward to bringing in more recruits & teaching others about how to be a Rifleman!

Starfox here.  Otherwise known as Andrew.  Made Rifleman at the November Davilla shoot.  Been to the August, Sept, and November shoots at Davilla.  Hope to make a lot more in both Davilla and Austin; time and bank account willing.  I'm the hubby and tag-a-long to DoubleLL.  We both are looking at becoming instructors at some point, with her leading the way.

Thanks to a ton of other Texans that have made the Texas shoots alot of fun and enjoyment (Scout, metalbot, Eva n' Kevin, Pop, Will, Brett, and others).

Hello Texas Company!
DoubleLL checking in... aka Lauren and wife to starfox. We are in the Fort Worth metroplex . I made rifleman in September at Davilla.  We are planning on making the Jan. '10 Austin shoot and the next RBC/IBC camp in Davilla. Special thanks to the Davilla crew and Scout who made our Appleseed experience a good one and keep us coming back.

Merry Christmas All!

Scout34 from Lampasas checking in.  Currently assigned to JSS Shield in lovely downtown Baghdad.  I will be returning to TX in May and am looking forward to continuing my education as an instructor (2 shoots as an IIT before I was so rudely interrupted).

Anybody else from Lampasas out there?

Hey scout34, doubleL and Viking, welcome aboard! scout34, I will be looking for you as soon as you get back, God keep you safe and return you to Texas in good order.

Everybody, make sure you give Metalbot a PM with your contact info so we can get you all on a Texas email loop. Send him a PM with your email, address and phone number so we can get you on the Texas email and snail mail loop and can contact you by telephone if we need to.

I will have the rest of the Davilla dates set up this week and we should have more info on extra locations in the state within another couple of weeks.

God bless you all and God bless Texas :)

Any news of another event at College Station/Millican?  I wasn't able to make November, but have been watching for another to pop up.  Haven't seen anything appear yet, and I'm jonesing.  Might have to turn to Davilla or Austin, but that Millican location is pretty convenient.

TOP here checking in.  You folks are the best.  Will be looking forward to getting back to an Appleseed in the spring.  My wife is running for County Judge here in Mills County.  I am amazed how much work is involved in a race in a county with only 5000 people.  Our goal is to knock on every door before early voting starts in 13 days.  Need more daylight.  Fortunately the 2 March primary will determine the outcome since it's just my wife and the incumbent in the same party!

7.62er here.  I went to the Midland Appleseed in November with 3 kids.  They loved it, I loved it.
I'm in Lubbock and have talked it up and have a good many friends and coworkers eager to have one here.
Some ideas:  I have a DPS friend here and he said he would look into getting us a weekend at the county LE range.  Has not materialized yet, so am still looking for a place.
What do y'all think about me setting up a table at next gun show here, drumming up interest?  I don't know if we have any RWVA ROs here, but would like to have someone here who has been to more than one Appleseed.
I can't help but think that with a population of almost 250,000 with very conservative beliefs, we could get quite a following going here.
  Any suggestions?
Thanks, David.

Hi David,

If you end up setting up something at a gun show in Midland, PM myself or spitstickler and we can get you some materials to hand out.  Spitstickler put together a helluva trifold, and we have business cards and other handouts that are useful.  We're doing the Fort Worth Gun Show on the 13th and 14th of this month.

Cheers!

(Lubbock)
Okay, I'm back and I have been talking this up with co-workers and friends and we are ready to get the ball rolling.  Having a respectable population (250K), we are hoping to get men trained to be red hats so we will be able to put on regular events.  I had a guy (ex-special forces) ask today what it would take to become an instructor.  So, what would be the best course to take?  I'm thinking for the first event or two, having potential red hats attend and get them on the road to becoming certified?
I spoke with the owner of a local talk radio station today (National Guard vet, deployed in Iraq a few years ago) and he enthusiastically agreed to an interview a week prior to our next gun show set for April 24-25.   I need someone from RWVA to call in for the interview.  I'm just not knowledgeable enough to do it alone.  Plus, I'm not sure if y'all want such a hillbilly-sounding hayseed doing this alone.  I plan on having a table for Appleseed and would appreciate any help on material for display (signs, banner, literature, etc.), tips and advice.  (I have already have offers for the gun show help)
I have a couple of offers for at least short range for starters and am fairly confident that in time and exposure, we will be able to secure a longer range.
What kind of time frame is expected for securing a date for instructors to plan on coming out?
Thanks,
David.

Another newbie arrival here.  I attended the Corpus shoot this weekend, my first Appleseed.  After 678839677 reminders about the same bad habits, I finally got Rifleman (222) on the very last AQT of the weekend. :)  The instructors were top-notch, and were all really great guys.

I learned a lot, especially about shooting in the cold, while soaking wet and muddy!  Gotta love Texas weather!

Thanks Zonkertx.

Folks, Zonk drove all the way to Corpus From San An Tonio with ormandj.  Both earned their Rifleman Patches.   O0  :--- :--- :--- ^:)^

Ya know, maybe its the "scenic" Gulf of Mexico beaches, maybe it is the great instructors, or perhaps it is the quality of student we attract down here,  but, in the last two Appleseeds here in the Texas Coastal Bend we have awarded three Riflemen patches.  That's 20% of our students earn their Rifleman Patch.

Has any other range kept statistics in this manner?  I don't think so.  But, regardless, I don't believe any other range has this high a percentage of Patch earners.  Hmmm, must be due to superior instruction and Texas' best beaches.   **)

Congrats zonkertx.  O0   We'll see you on the trail soon with that orange hat.

A_Texian here.  Ed from the recent Fredericksburg shoot. Y'all made an "easy sell" with me, that's for sure.  I'm hooked!

Ordered another 10 bricks of my favorite .22LR ammo and got a Ciener conversion kit for my AR, so I can practice with it as well as my 10/22.

Oh, also joined up with RWVA, ordered 100 of y'alls AQT targets and plenty of the folding business cards to help get others in my area on board for future shoots.  There's a LOT of shooters in this neck 'o the woods (Deer Capitol of the World around here).  Also got a Sunday-go-to-meetin' shooters mat for posterity.

Now I've gotta perform the "sacrilege" of mowing a shooting path through our gorgeous bluebonnets at the range out at our ranch ... the only drawback to all this (man the wildflowers have been awesome this year; after about a five year drought with nothing but BROWN & GREY EVERYWHERE!)

Scout, Newt, Labrat and the rest of y'all - Y'ALL ARE THE BEST, BAR NONE!!  I want to personally thank y'all not only for this past weekend, but for ALL that you guys do for this noble venture!!

I'm looking forward to getting there as much as time/resources will allow in our future events here, as well as up yonder in "Camp Scout" (aka; Davilla) when time allows.

God Bless One & All,

A_Texian

PS:  After about 20 years of reenacting in the c.1836 Texas Revolution genre, I reckon I'm gonna have to start poking around for a tricorn hat eh? lol  Oh well, I already have a 2nd Model Brown Bess (Santa Anna's troops were armed with them from surplus they bought from England ... sometimes I portray an 1836 Soldado Mexicano).  Also have all the requisite rifled-flinters and other gear, so heck, that's about 90% of the cost of getting fixed up circa 1775 right there!!  Come to think of it, if I opt for a powdered wig, that'll be the first time I've had hair in 30-odd years!!!  :))

Don't do that! Just practice the sitting and standing until the end of May...good practice for field shooting where everything ain't always mowed. Problem solved.

Thanks for coming out, by the way. It was great to meet all the folks there and know that the citizens in the area are fired up.

QuoteYou do realize you just volunteered to help Ron beat the bushes there to flush people out to an Appleseed, don't you?

Like I said, I already ordered two packets of those excellent folding bidness cards (the ones with the 1" black square on 'em) to pass around.  I'll hook 'em like a fish!  8)

I'm (very) politically active here: Started all the Ron Paul stuff here in the Hill Country, member of the "Patriots" group (in fact we Ron Paulers were the ones who woke them up), somewhat involved with the Tea Partiers (although they're "tenderfeet" and have quite a ways to go to achieve true awareness and realize what works and what doesn't politically), a two-time delegate to the RPT State Convention, Precinct Chair (#302) in Blanco County, etc., etc....  With that comes a LOT of connections with folks who will be highly likely to jump at the prospect of attending an Appleseed event (although they're like Tater Chips ... nobody can attend just one!!).  It's doubtful I'll make each and every one (especially if they're monthly), but I can probably muster something on the order of "every few months."

Looking forward to seeing you fellers again soon.

Bander 1643 here in NE Fort Worth. Been here a year. Moved down from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the good part exculding Filthadelphia & Pittsburgh, commonly know as PennsylTucky, or the other Alabama.

I'm a Threeper, and spend a lot of time at Sipsey Street Irregulars. Just got volunteered as the Deputy Point of Contact for North Texas Alarm Riders and Preparedness.

Was reminded about AS by Bander1643 yesterday at our Dallas TGO meet.

Name is Ray, I live in Houston, and go by DCortez on the internet.  I started a site called Texas Gun Owner.com. We promote social shooting in a family oriented and friendly setting.  I see a September event in Texas that I think our members would be interested in.

Well,  I sure get the thing about being cooks, but I think I'm starting out as a cook's assistant.  I participated in the Sept. 18-19, 2010 AS with Scout & crew, and learnt that patience is still a virtue (of course, it was just Murphy's Law is my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!). I also leart that iron sights ain't all that bad even if you can't really see the full outline of the black. I see from earlier posts that I come close to being a bunk mate of didactic and LAbRat, as we all seem to hang our hats in Bastrop County.

Welcome guys. Great to see everyone here. Remember to go to the Texas Newsletter website  http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=11952.0  so you can sign up for the newsletter. We will be running a lot of info out of the newsletter in the next few weeks. This is a very exciting time for Texas as we are trying to do some things not done before by any state in Appleseed. I want you all to be a part of this.

In addition to the newsletter, we would like you all to get a twitter account and then follow Texas Appleseed and AppleseedRadio. These are the two major twitter accounts that you can follow to get updates on what is happening in Texas and also nationally and also to help spread the word of Appleseed. If you have a facebook account then we would like to make sure we get everyone linked on facebook as well.

Spitstickler and Aaron are working hard to develop a program where we can instantly be alerted to information on all of these accounts at once and also spread promotional material for Texas shoots using these venues. As we get this developed we will be presenting it to you and asking you to help us with this. Texas will be leading the way with the new technology we will be using and if it works out like we hope it will we will be spreading it to the rest of Appleseed, but it will not work unless you guys participate. So get cracking please. See you all on the trail.

Next event will likely be in the Spring. I need to do a LOT of dry firing practice between now and then... Probably would not hurt to do more stretching so I can get into those sitting positions too!

Hello, Brian here from San Antonio, Tx.
Attended my first Appleseed Shoot this past weekend in Davila at Scout's place and loved every minute of it! Although the rifle I brought had a tainted front sight, Mark was nice enough to lend me his Marlin 795 to complete the instruction. Although I didn't earn my patch this weekend, I walked away with a new perspective on shooting, safety, and appreciation for our 2nd Ammendment rights. Thank you to everyone who made the weekend great and I look forward to coming back to earn that patch and improve my shooting performance!

A Cherokee Legend
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.
"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

I am here. I have always been here. April 19,2010, I stood, sat, and layed by the well and I drank from the well. The nourishment refreshed and revitalized my soul and gave strength and new resolve to the good wolve. The Purple Patch serves  as my reminder of that day. Like the wild horses and the buffaloe, I have returned to the well, as I shall again. May the Great Spirit shine upon us all till we meet again.

Okay, now that my voice is warmed up......

I would like to thank all of the instructors that put up with me and all my groaning last week at boot camp.

I have been sharing the Appleseed program with just about everyone I have seen this week.

My son (Michael, now 15.....the one of us 2 that came home with a Rifleman's Patch) has been walking through the house yelling out line commands.

He just happens to yell out "Your preparation time has now ended" as he passes the bathroom with his sister in there primping.

I had been saying for quite a while that I would never spend "x" for a 10/22, cause a Marlin 60 works just fine. Traded a shotgun for one yesterday.  Who's goin ta Davilla Dec. 18??????????????????????????????????????????

Hello there Russell,

I am very happy to hear you and Micheal had a good time and learned much about the beginnings of our great Republic and rifle marksmanship.

Marksmanship and the history of our Republic's beginnings that helped to build the principles on which it was founded go hand in hand.

Therefore, it is up to all of us to ensure it is preserved and passed on to our future generations or it will certainly be lost.  Future generations of Americans will be gelded of what their potential could be in life should Americans forget the history of their Republic.

Your son, Micheal, he is certainly one of the smartest and respectful youngmen that I have Instructed with RWVA/Appleseed.

Micheal was in my "how to Instruct" group session during the Friday part of RBC, as you know.

He blew me away with his knowledge gained but within a week and had never attended an Appleseed event before.  He listened to instruction, shot expert, and can also do a very good job at repeating instruction we need on the Appleseed firing line.

He was not exactly perfect per verbatim(this takes time by being boots on the ground on the line), but his motivation and knowledge tells me he's above and beyond most folks his age and most adults.

Of course, this does reflect on you as well, Russell.  One can always judge a tree by its fruit.

Meeting yourself and your son was a pleasure.  Such an experience that you've both enjoyed and have learned makes every RWVA Instructors time spent PAID forth more than you can possibly imagine, more than fiat paper money, more even than gold or diamonds.........it is simply priceless.

Indeed, DAVILLA 11-10!!!

Don't forget to look at the RBC after action report and pics..........if anyone has more pics....post'em if ya want to  :

Mike from Houston here.

I attended my first Appleseed shoot this weekend in F'burg (12/4 - 5).  What a great experience!

I've done many shoot n' scoot courses with carbine and pistol, but this was the first time I was able to have someone instruct me on the true fundamentals of shooting.  I'm here to tell you, that instruction worked.  Thanks to the outstanding work from RainmanJS as shoot boss, great instruction from dragit and helpful pointers from Mark & Mark acting as orange hats at the shoot, I was able to qualify as Rifleman.  I will wear that patch with pride and will keep the challenge coin I was presented with on me at all times.

The work y'all do is truly inspiring.  So inspiring in fact that I'm really thinking seriously about taking up dragit's challenge to pay it forward by becoming an IIT.  By doing so, I can support a cause I believe in at my very core, and by helping others, I can't help but improve myself.

Thanks to all the folks that make this opportunity possible.  I hope to join your ranks before too long, and will continue to attend shoots and spread the good word about Appleseed.

We could use another orange hat down in Houston. We are trying to find a range there this next year in 2011. Starfox and I say "there is nothing else like the company of fellow rifleman." You find great people in the instructor group. Send me a PM if you want more details about the program.

Wolf,
We have several opportunities for you. You can join the program and help out, Scout needs help with the radio show or be apart of our national teams. We also have rifleman boot camps that test your skills at known distance or you could attend a known distance Appleseed. We would love to have more help in the instructor group if you would like to take up an orange hat. Just send me a PM if your interested.

Wolf, Two Wolves here. Congratulations---RIFLEMAN---. I hope you have read my first  post as it will help you understand what I'm about to say.   The Appleseed challenge to becoming a Rifleman really exemplifies the continuous battle of the good wolf vs. the evil wolf. When you attended your first Appleseed shoot, you were given food and nourishment for your good wolf inside you and it was tasty and the good wolf ate well and wanted more. This is evident by your perseverance and your desire for more. There are many ways to feed  the good wolf and one of the most potent and powerful is to stay as active in Appleseed as you can. Turn the good wolf loose so that he may lead others to this Bounty. For me--I feed my good wolf by helping to set up the firing line prior to a shoot, and providing canopies and mowing and giving encouragement and friendship to the shooters at these events in hopes that they too will win that battle that goes on inside them. Many people will tell you that your job is not done, but I will tell you to just feed your good wolf and he will lead the way.

Mike,
Good to hear of another Houston IIT. I'm near Sealy. PM me if you're interested in shooting at my place sometime. I'll also be at College Station this weekend. So far it's the closest range for the Houston area. Hope to see you.

Good to see you here Thomas; your next step is to take the orange hat.  Join us as an instructor.  Come to the next Appleseed you can make, there's one this coming weekend in San Angelo, next weekend in Davilla and step up.  Ask for the orange hat, we'll put you to work.  We can use the help.
Looking forward to seeing you again, soon.

My best advice is to help the program grow.  We need to reach our fellow Americans and spread the heritage. You can do this many ways:  By talking up Appleseed, by bringing relatives, friends, neighbors, etc to an event, or by helping out in those thankless tasks like manning gun shows, or helping out with the organizational details of Appleseed.

The ultimate path is to take up the Orange Hat and become an IIT.  This is not something to be taken lightly however. We expect a lot of our instructors at all levels.  Travel, commitment of time, and being willing to learn and advance through the instructor levels.  Minimally we would like 4 shoots a year of our instructors with the nominal expectation being 4-6.  Some do more depending on their unique circumstances.  It is big commitment, but one that pays for itself in seeing your fellow Americans come alive to their heritage and to see shooters get excited at seeing their marksmanship improve.   Honestly, there's no money in being an instructor, but the benefits of working the Trail and connecting with fellow Americans at all levels is massively rewarding.  It is why the instructors do this job.

We also need ranges, both public and private, you can help Appleseed grow by securing new host ranges.  There are so many ways to help this great organization and our vital Mission in saving this great Republic.  Think long and hard on what path best fits for you.  The base goal is to help our program grow, and there are a myriad of ways to accomplish this.  We would be thankful for any effort you can give to accomplish the Mission.

I will say, I have been privileged to meet and know some of the finest people on the Trail.  Truly, there is no better company than that of your fellow Riflemen!

doubleLL & CaptG,

Thanks for the replies and offers of advice and a place to shoot.  I'll PM you before too long to connect with you.  I'd love to see if there was a way to get some events in Houston in 2011.  I'm sure there have been strenous efforts made on that front already, but I'd like to help further efforts where I can.

Clark from Athens checking in.  I'm new to this forum stuff so please bear with me.

Wolf, congratulations... It was an honor getting the patch with you.

Question:  Is there a way to be notified when new Texas shoots come on the schedule - especially up here in the East Texas area (Athens, Terrell, maybe Atlanta)?

Enjoyed our first shoot and my sons and their friends are trying to figure out when they can go again. When I got home tonight, one of my rifleman sons showed me a 217 target he shoot this afternoon during another practice session.  I believe I'm doing my part to keep the bulk rimfire ammo people in business! I'm glad they are enjoying shooting outside with the real thing rather than playing on the computer inside.

Thanks,

There is no automatic mechanism in place. Best best is to keep checking the website.  You can also sign up for the Texas newsletter here: http://eepurl.com/ie3t (http://eepurl.com/ie3t)  It will have what's coming up in the next couple of months.  If you Facebook you can find us there as well: http://www.facebook.com/appleseedTexas (http://www.facebook.com/appleseedTexas)

Got back from Leonard late last night myself. It was a good shoot. Hopefully everybody learned a lot and enjoyed the history. I know there was huge improvements in shooting ability.

And thanks to Andrew and Lauren for getting AS in the DFW area. Those two have worked their tails off so that the North Texas shooters now have a number of ranges to chose from.

And thanks for enduring the heat and humidity and coming out and joining us.

Brother (and sister) Texans, sign in, please.

I don't know if I qualify as a Texan just yet.  I still think of myself as a Cheese Head, who's been living in the land of Hoosiers for the last 11 years.  However......  Due to some unexpected changes with work at the end of 2011, I find myself no longer living in the state of Indiana with Hawkhaven, Techres, Yellow House Jake, and the rest of that lot.

I'm now living in Austin Texas.  I will be working nights starting Jan. 18 from Weds. through Sat. which means into Sunday morning.  I expect this is going to keep me from being real active with shoots.  However I would like to help out in any way I can.

Also if you happen to be in the Austin area, and want to get together for, whatever, please let me know.  My wife and daughter are still in Indiana and will be until Feburary at the earliest.

Thanks all!

Looked for an intro thread, couldn't find it.  This is the closest I found so I figured it'll have to do lo.

Anyway, I heard about this program through some like minded friends in East Texas.  I live in West Houston.  I'd call myself an intermediate shooter but a beginner when it comes to rifle handling.  I shoot pistols quite often, and reload a few calibers as well.

I am a 30 year old full time college student, married no kids.

I'm interested in learning more about this program and attending one of the meets in the near future (going to try to make it to College Station on the 25th and 26th).  Well I don't know many people here and am not exactly familiar with this sort of thing, but I like how it's focus is on the nation's founding principles, and improving marksmanship and self reliance, so I'm definitely interested in participating.  Any help, advice, or guidance is appreciated.  Thanks.

Mag357,

Good folks out at College Station. You can send a private message to "Sleepy Joe" or "Sir Not Appearing In This Film" as they are usually running the events out there.

You can pre-register for the May event here: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/6159253493

What to bring: http://www.appleseedinfo.org/as_prepare.html

You don't need to do anything special beyond what's on the list. Just come and experience it. Bring the wife too!

Fredericksburg checking in! Looking forward to another great year in Appleseed! As was said at the 1st Liberty pole in Farmington Conn. May 19, 1774 about the Boston blocade:
"That we scorn the chains of slavery; we despise every attempt to rivet them upon us; we are the sons of freedom and resolve that, till time shall be no more, Godlike virtue shall blazon our hemisphere."  ;D
1st Appleseed march 6 2014. Earned Rifleman and became a volunteer. So proud to be able to be a part of such a group of men and women.

And rb - I just got a PM from Two Wolves - we'll be getting Fredericksburg on the schedule as soon as possible.

And yeah - Texas is always slow getting the schedule up - but we'll get there.

Looking forward to meeting you guys. I'll be one of the instructors that weekend. Also I have some CCI Standard velocity courtesy of the Federal/ATK Youth Shooting Sports program. I'll let it go for a donation which will helpfully cover my costs - which is much much cheaper than in stores. Give me a PM and I'll give you details. It's for youth under 18 so that would at least cover your son & daughter.

Ditto to what NJRefugee said - welcome to Texas!  What part of Texas are you in?

The Waco range is very nice - we're a little spoiled, with an overhead canopy to keep sun, rain etc. off (plus a few other perks).  If you can make it out sometime, we'd love to have you.

Welcome to Texas Tumbleweed!

I'm in the Plano area; it looks like you're not too far from us.

The Waco range is about a 2 hour trip for you, and where I volunteer pretty frequently.  We have shoots just-about every month.  There's an insulated overhang to keep the rain off, as well as that Texas sun.  There's also a back room with heat & A/C for when you need a break from the elements.

If you get a chance, we'd love to have you come out with us.  November in particular would be a great time for you to come out, although it will be a slightly not-typical month.  That month is reserved for a group of Trail Life boys.  We're arranging for extra backers to accommodate more shooters than normal, so this will be both a larger group than normal as well as a younger group than normal.  They're a good group of boys; we've done this for several years and always enjoy having this group.

I volunteer at most of the Waco events, and am acting as Shoot-Boss-in-Training for November specifically.  Let me know if there's anything I can do to help, or feel free to PM Ghostring who is the Texas coordinator - he's very approachable and will be happy to help.

Hey guys, I'm Javier. I'm from San Antonio, my nephew Daniel and I completed the Appleseed here in South Texas on October 15th. I completed my first Appleseed back in April.
I took what I learned and ran with it. I've been coaching my nephew for a couple of months now and we're having fun becoming marksmen :) We didn't get our Rifleman badges together like we planned in October but we know how to clean up our mistakes and refine our skills. Appleseed has been the best thing for us :D

Hi Javier!

It sounds like you're doing the most important thing you can right now - persistence!

You've probably heard this, but most people - especially if they don't have a military background - do not earn Rifleman on their first attempt.  I didn't grow up around firearms & itt personally took me three tries, with some individual practice inbetween.  I know that there are many others with similar stories.

Keep at it!   ~~:)

We're going for perfect shots, every shot; and we have no time to think about anything that isn't concerning the rifle in our hands and the target down range :D

Roguetom here from DFW.
Just atteded my 3rd Appleseed weekend in Waco with our Trail Life Troop 226 from Plano, TX.  It was a very well taught event that yielded 4 new Riflemen and several recertifications. Several also stepped up to take Orange hats.
BTW the Central Texas Rifle and Pistol Club
Is the nicest outdoor range I have ever been to.

Welcome Roguetom!  Sorry that I wasn't able to make that event, although I do make most of the Waco events.  Trail Life is a fantastic organization as well; I always enjoy time with those young men.  If that was your 3rd event there I wouldn't be too surprised if we've crossed paths in the past, & we probably will cross paths again in the future.

If you're in the DFW area, you might want to look at volunteering at the Quail Creek range March 9.  It's a 1-day event, & I'll be shoot-bossing it.  Currently we have all of 2 instructors  $$-0; you'd be very welcome to join us!

Hey yall!  I'm Ryan from Bandera County.  I just attended my first Appleseed shoot today (in San Antonio) and it was a total blast!  I haven't been this sore from having fun in a very long time.  I even made Rifleman (no one was more surprised by this accomplishment than I was) on the last AQT of the day.  I look forward to doing more Appleseed events and brining some friends along as well.

Ryan,

Welcome to the Appleseed family and congrats on earning your Rifleman patch!  We would love to see you at another event soon, so that you can build on your success and continue to improve.

Definitely bring friends and encourage those you know to bring their kids.  There's a Tippmann Appleseed rifle giveaway going on to encourage parents to shoot with their kids at Texas events.

I'm usually in Waco or DFW. Hope to see you on the line if you're ever up this way.

Regards,
NJrefugee

Good evening,
Checking in from south Texas.  Started with A-Lister in Alice and just did the KD with Ghostring, Palerider, A-lister, and others whose handles I do not know.  Had a great time and looking forward to more history, marksmanship, and fun in the future!
Thanks!

Hey all -

It looks like it's been awhile since anyone posted in this thread, and since I am pretty lame at forums, I figured here was as a good a place as any to post.

Am a new Orange Hat (IIT) and am excited to get more involved in the program.   I am located just north of San Antonio in Bulverde.    Was looking to make the KD this weekend down the road near New Braunfels - but promised the wife I would take a few weekends to get the spring gardens ready.  :)

I am planning on attending the KD in May and then continuing the IIT fun at the Appleseed on April 24/25 in San Antonio.

In other news, am also an EMT-B, and a ham - KC5HUO.      I am an avid blackpowder/muzzleloader shooter, so the history aspects of Appleseed are right up my alley . . . .

Hey Sheepdog - it'll be good to see you back in the saddle. Just to be sure - did you want to come back as an instructor? I'll have to get you reinstated since right now you are set as a retired shoot boss.

Oh and everybody - we do have a new range in Gainesville, TX (near the Oklahoma border) - even have a KD scheduled for December 5-6, 2020.

Gainesville, TX Appleseed September 5, 2020 - One Day Event
Gainesville, TX Appleseed October 3, 2020 - One Day Event
Gainesville, TX Appleseed November 7, 2020 - One Day Event
Gainesville, TX Known Distance Appleseed December 5-6, 2020

That would only be  about a 1 hour drive for Dan & Jason.

Hello there, Our normal shoot boss for Gainesville mentioned that she may be starting one up around march. Its a phenomenal range and you'll have a blast, In the mean time Waco is just 2 short hours away with a equally impressive range. The next one is this month in January. And I believe it still had quite a lot of openings available. Hope to see you on the range soon bud.

I've been wanting to do an Appleseed shoot for many years, but never had the geographic good fortune to be near one when it was happening. I hope to change that before the end of this year.

Hope everyone is gearing up for a great weekend in this amazing weather we're having in the DF Dub!

Welcome to Texas!

Rockwall - you're just a short hop from my area in Plano  O0

We'd love to see you out with us.  The two closest ranges to you will be Waco and Gainesville; both are excellent.  There's a fair chance that you'd see me at either one.  For Gainesville, the rest of 2021 is either private events for groups that booked up in advance, or known distance  :snipersmi (you'd want to do a 25 meter event first).  There will be more 25m events in Gainesville in 2022.  Waco has more open events, and generally meets the third weekend of every month.

Let me know if there are any questions we can help with!

Hello Everyone, Javier checking back in! My nephew and I attended several Appleseed shoots in San Antonio about 3 or 4 years back. We had a blast and it got me hooked on to shooting small paper targets.

I never quite made it to my Rifleman badge though, those rapid stages are not a joke. I think I came up 5 points shy on my best target. Needless to say that Rifleman badge has been lingering in the back of my mind as I've continued shooting over the years.

I'll be attending the Oct 15 and 16th in San Antonio and hope to improve my hold. I will see everyone there!
