.22 Ammo, or the lack thereof.

Persistent rumours are that .22 ammo is pretty much unavailable anywhere, and it may be some months before it starts coming back.

Does anyone have any ideas how to hold Appleseed events without?

I have a couple to get the discussion started.

1.  Dry fire seed.

2.  Tell more history, turn it into a Libertyseed on steroids.

Buy CMP .22 Centurion by the 5K round case and sell to shooters at cost?  Can we somehow do a club purchase?

It's been impossible to come by any in the usual stores, but I see that there was some on gunbroker a couple of days ago, and if I was eligible to order from the CMP there is some there, too. Speaking as someone signed up and paid up for the February AS in Ariel, I would not be particularly interested in a "dry fire and story telling" weekend. I assume that I will be able to find a couple of bricks of ammo by then, somewhere, somehow.

Every retail person who I've talked to in the last couple of weeks is grumbling and talking like there will never be any more 22 ammo again, ever, but I seriously doubt that is the case. My prediction is that by February/March things will be partly back to "pre-Conn-shooting" availability. Call me an optimist.

Speaking of the CMP, on their website they list shooting ranges that you can be a member of to be eligible to order from them; is there an official Appleseed "club" that one can join and gain the same benefits? I'm not particularly close by to any of the listed ranges and clubs, and it seems silly to pay $120 a year for a range that I have to drive an hour and a half each way to use.

Audrey

Josh and I stock piled some over the weekend in hopes of having enough to get us through the next local seed (in February). We had to hunt it down; Coast Farm was where we found some... they may be out now. Bi-Mart, Wal-Mart, Dick's... everywhere has been empty, empty, empty. It's hard to clear my Red Coat without any bullets!

Theophilus

Looks like the CMP has Aguila for $230 per 5000 round case for the cheapest.  That would make it $23 plus shipping for 500 rounds.  Shipping looks to be $24.95 per case.  I don't see where you need to be a club to order.

I think I will have to make an order, in order to have some for the Patriot's day event.

Thanks for the suggestion, Unbridled Liberty.

Membership in the RWVA qualifies as a CMP affiliated club.  I think, $20/year.  Haven't looked at the cost lately, but I need to.  I need to renew myself.

Perfect, thanks. I thought you had to be a club member to buy anything from the CMP. I'll probably order some of that $230 ammo, too, if I don't have to be an affiliated member. Although it looks like it would also be a good idea to be a RWVA member anyway.

thanks again!

Here's how:  http://www.appleseedinfo.org/join_rwva.html
Signing up online is done through the same system you used to register for Ariel.

Although it might not be the right choice for you personally, I don't think it's silly to join a range far from you. Supporting ranges offers benefits beyond the ability to go there. Without members, ranges tend to disappear. Although some new ranges open, there has been a net loss of ranges across the country over recent years.
(Personally, I've joined a couple of ranges that i only visit once or twice a year, because I think it's important to support the ranges that support Appleseed. I've also found that the side-benefits usually offset the cost.)

Ditto here. I joined a club that I've shot at maybe twice in a year and a half, because they host a lot of training classes. Firearm education is important to me because smart shooters are safe shooters. That's also why I joined the RWVA and am trying to find a local venue to host an Appleseed.

By the way, Red, RWVA membership does meet the CMP's requirement for club membership, and attending an Appleseed meets their participation requirement for buying a rifle. That's how I got my brand new 1957 M1 Garand. (grin)

I tried to order some Aquilla last night and got an error that said it was restricted to club purchase only  :( ...If there's a club account we can use to get a group buy, I'd like in.
Palmetto State Armory has CCI 36g Mini-Mags or 40g Standard Velocity for 6.99 per 100.

There's a Patriot's Day event?

In Oregon Coastal Farm does have a few locations. The recently had some Federal bulk packs on sale, but the local branch was out. They also had a bunch of CCI Blazer for $1.99/box. There was still about 120 boxes left the last time I was there. If anyone wants me to check or pick some up I can do that if they have any left. I'm in the Salem, OR area.

Other than that, I heard Cabela's was out but filling backorders fairly quickly, usually in a few weeks. Don't know if that's still the case or not. I have a couple of 1500 round CCI Tactical's on order set to be delivered to the Springfield store to avoid shipping. If you live close enough to a physical store, ordering online with local delivery is probably the best option.

Red Alder Ranch

I went ahead and joined the RWVA, as it is the most affordable option for me to become eligible to use the CMP store.  The range closest to me and the one I would be most likely to use is not on the list at the CMP. Now I'm on hold, number 14 in the queue, trying to get a CMP account set up.

Yes - April 20-21 in Oak Harbor, Washington.  I think that is in your neck of the woods. ;)

There are still plenty more events being planned for 2013. Events still in the planning process won't show up on the calendar until after they've been confirmed. But you should always plan for a shoot on Patriot's Day weekend!

is the CCI blazer 50 loose rounds per pack?  or in trays?

if it's in trays, go back and get the  50-round  packs, all of them

that stuff works in everything, and will enable you shoot an RM score every time

It's the best stuff out there unless you find mini-mags, but for 1/2 the price

It is the 50 round trays. They broke all their 10 pack bricks apart for some reason. Mini-mags are my preference, but these seem to work very well too.

Red Alder Ranch

CCI blazer is my favorite, but I cannot find it anywhere right now, and there are no Coastal Farm stores anywhere near me either.

Does anyone have any experience with the Aguila that the CMP has? I am going to try to complete my order for a case of that tomorrow, unless I hear that it's the worst stuff ever...

Red Alder Ranch

I got a tip on another forum and managed to order four bricks of CCI Blazer from a shop in GA. So I'm good to go for February. I still might get a case of Aguila from the CMP, though.

Strongly recommend getting on CMP email list; received word a few days ago that they were selling 1970s   .30 carbine ammo at something like (not exact figures, but close) 1350 rds for $500 + shipping.  Not bad for M1 carbine owners.
  Still selling 200 rds of .30-06 @ $98 + shipping - cheapest, non-corrosive around of which I am aware...
CMP also went through 40 MILLION-plus  Rem .22 from 1995 in a matter of days, @ $125/5k, a few months ago - so keep watching their site and get on their email list.
Am also away there is ongoing effort to mutually promote Appleseed/CMP programs in each other's literature and CMP catalogs...

yeah, I added myself to their mailing list, and joined the RWVA so I can use the CMP store. Still have to fax in all the paperwork and make a first order so I get all set up with them.

Just ordered a case of Centurion standard .22.  Last ammo order (M2 ball) took just over a month.  I'll keep you updated when this order arrives.

I bought a case of them in 09 when I couldn't find anything else. They worked great in my Ruger MKI. No so well in my 10/22. Not so well in others 10/22's eithor.

Good news.  I ordered a case of CMP of Centurion .22 on January 9th, and Fedex tracking indicates delivery is scheduled for tomorrow.  My last order, in November 2012, took just over one month, so this latest shipment is even faster.

The bad news is that according to the update two days ago, CMP is out of .22 and has no expectations of more before April.

"Aguila .22LR Ammunition.  The CMP is sold out of caliber .22 rimfire ammunition. The manufacturer, Aguila, has advised that the earliest we can expect resupply is late April, 2013, at slightly higher pricing. We are still accepting orders and will fill those orders as soon as we have received new inventory. At the rate that orders are being received for this backordered ammunition, the entire resupply quantity may be sold before it is even received. Anyone interested in receiving this .22 ammo should place their order now and get on the list."  Place your order on the CMP E-Store at http://estore.thecmp.org/store/catalog/catalog.aspx?pg=catalogList&cat=AMC.
