Is there anything I should do to prepare for a Project Appleseed™ event?
In short, yes. We have compiled tips and information that will help you prepare for an upcoming event.

We have members and events all over the country. However, we rely on people interested in having an Appleseed close to their home to get the ball rolling in their area. Feel free to contact us and we’ll help you with all the planning and details.
We do everything we can to make events as affordable as possible. Click here to see how much it might cost to attend an upcoming event.
If your child is old enough to safely handle a rifle by himself/herself and endure a long day of instruction, he/she is welcome to attend. A Project Appleseed event can be a great bonding experience for the whole family but be aware that some states require that a child is a certain age to handle a rifle. Other restrictions may apply.
More than likely, yes! Not only do we have an increasing number of female participants and instructors, we also offer Ladyseed events which are for women only.
You can use any safe rifle permitted by the range which can be accurately shot from the shoulder, from a .22 to a .32 (8mm). We’re semi-auto and bolt-gun friendly.
Our events are not caliber specific. It doesn’t matter to us if you use .308, .30-06, .223, .22, 7.62×39, 8mm, .303 — they’re all fine. If you’re a good marksman, you’ll be able to hit with any caliber, though .22LR is typically preferred as a good economical choice.
Some locations allow only 22 Rimfire ammunition. Please see the registration page for each location for more information.
It’s hard to say. Every event is unique and the actual number of rounds depends on a number of different variables like the number of shooters, weather, etc. For guidance, figure 150 rounds on Saturday, and 250 rounds on Sunday – but bring extra, just in case.
Yes. A USGI web sling, like for the M1 Garand or M14 are cheap and easy to use. We recommend getting one. You can purchase one on the Appleseed Store.
Yes, however a Rifleman’s Patch (for scoring 210 or higher on the Appleseed Qualification Test) will not be awarded if an expert shot is scored while using a bipod. We also encourage you to use iron sights, but optics are okay. However, we do allow a bipod if you absolutely need to use one. And for some of our younger students we suggest using a bipod or we’ll set them up on sandbags.
Rifles: We don’t rent rifles. However, loaner rifles and other equipment may be available at your event, on a first-come, first-serve basis, depending on local laws. Loaner rifles are the personal property of Appleseed volunteers. If and when made available by Appleseed instructors/volunteers, loaner rifles are loaned gratuitously. No part of the class fee is allocated to providing loaner rifles.
If you find yourself in need of loaner equipment, please send us an email, and we will try to provide equipment that you may borrow for the event.
Pistols: Students must attend with their own pistol. We do not loan or rent pistols for our pistol clinics.
Project Appleseed does not offer refunds for events that have not been canceled but we will allow you to transfer registration one time to attend another future event.
Project Appleseed is a non-profit organization that’s run 100% by volunteers. We are always looking for more instructors, event coordinators, and support staff, as well as monetary support. The best way to support Project Appleseed is to join the RWVA or to Donate. You can also help by using AmazonSmile. A small portion of each purchase goes to Appleseed. And it doesn’t cost you anything.
Appleseed is a fast-growing non-profit nationwide community of volunteers. Therefore, it is to be expected that prices, terms, and programs offered are and can be subject to change without notice. Visitors to our site should be cautioned that printed literature can be old/out-of-date, and that only prices and opportunities currently listed on the site are authoritative as to current Appleseed programs and opportunities.
