SoCal Piru event (May 17th): help with sling for my 10/22

Gentlemen

I'm preparing a Ruger 10/22 60th anniversary edition for the upcoming course in Piru and got a few questions concerning the proper sling.

The rifle I got is this one: https://ruger.com/news/2024-01-01.html

This last weekend I installed and zeroed a Vortex Crossfire II (2-7x32) scope on it and I was pretty happy with the results (shooting from bench at 50 yards with Federal copper platted hollow point 36 grain value pack).

The question I got is what do I need to buy to be able to mount a sling on this little rifle?

I've found reports of people buying the magpul sling mount kit 1 and 2:
https://magpul.com/sling-mount-kit-type-1.html?mp_global_color=118
https://magpul.com/sling-mount-kit-type-2.html?mp_global_color=118

Plus the dual sling:
https://magpul.com/ms4-dual-qd-sling-gen-2.html?mp_global_color=136

Would that combo work well for the course? If negative, what do you guys suggest?

I was looking for something that would be easy to install on the X-22 magpul stock. I don't have
any relevant experience gunsmithing and would prefer something that is 'plug n play' on the stock.

For the sling itself, the best Magpul product would be the RLS; I don't recommend any of the MS-series for use as shooting aids as you'll learn at Appleseed.

For the attach hardware on this stock, you want something that will put a swivel on the bottom front M-LOK, and then the Type-1 kit on your dominant side. Simplest thing is MAG606 for the front, and then assemble the sling onto two MAG540s.

Nightpoison

As Mmirate has pointed out the best option for a Magpul sling is the RLS(Rifleman Loop Sling). There are a few other slings, non Magpul that do a fine job for shooting from the sling. Most slings, however are geared towards other styles of shooting or just don't work for supported shooting.

With that said the go to Sling is the USGI Cotton Sling. There are several very good reasons why Appleseed recommends and instructs with this sling.

There are those, students and instructors, who use the Magpul or other variety of sling, but for me, the USGI is the gold standard.
One-third of humanity remains honest, one-third corrupt, and the final third sways to the will of others. With two-thirds either compromised or weak, what is left for the honest to do?

If you look on the bottom of your stock, you'll see that there are two little dimples (one at the front of the stock, and one towards the rear before the spacers) that are designed for you to install 3/8" sling studs. That will allow you to attached sling swivels, which will allow you to use your choice of sling.  I've done this for both of my 10/22s and I used USGI cotton web slings.  These are the studs I used:

Brownell's carries something similar, but they've been out of stock when I was in the market for them.

@all: all good advice, I really appreciate it!

@mmirate: do you mean this sling: https://magpul.com/rls-sling.html?mp_global_color=118

And this mount: https://magpul.com/m-lok-qd-sling-mount.html?mp_global_color=118

With two of this swivels: https://magpul.com/qd-sling-swivel.html?mp_global_color=118

Finally using the Type 1: https://magpul.com/sling-mount-kit-type-1.html?mp_global_color=118

Is that all I need? I'm planning to do an express order to be able to have everything ready to go ASAP.

That's all correct, but Amazon and other retailers will usually get you better price and quicker shipping - kudos to B.C. for putting you together a shopping-list.

@B.C.: man... I owe you a beer!

I just ordered the items you suggested, I should receive everything by Monday.

I wonder if it would make sense and also order the Magpul bipod (MAG933: https://magpul.com/bipod-m-lok.html?mp_global_color=118)?

It is for sale on Amazon for $88 bucks:

Mrs. Smith

Bipods have their place, for sure, but you won't use it at Appleseed.

And we strongly recommend the USGI sling. So much so that our course of instruction specifies it.  While the RLS will work, the USGI is far more easily set up, as well as much more easily adjusted (you can do it with one hand, WHILE slung up.)

Guys

First the good news: I got all the necessary parts for the course.

Now the *BAD* news: I just got called for Jury duty and will be stuck in court for the next 7 days (give or take).

I was planning to do the 25yd course as it is a requirement for the 200 yd course later in the month (05/31 and 06/01 in Sacramento - CA).

What are my options here?

I don't mind Appleseed keeping the $95 + $110 = $205 bucks deposit since the organization does such great work... but it is going to suck big time to have to pay *twice* on *top* of having to wait for the next date when the courses will be available in California.

I'll cancel your ticket for the Sacramento Rimfire Known Distance May 31-June 1, 2025. And give you a raincheck. I'll send you an email with details. There will be a 10 dollar transfer fee.

As far as the sling kit - just hang on to that.

FOR EVERYBODY - READ THIS:

This is info that ALL of you should know. My wife has jury duty coming up too. And thankfully she already knows about this following info:

Do you know your rights as a juror - assuming they select you? If not you really really need to learn about it. This used to be common knowledge at one time. But unfortunately not anymore.

https://fija.org/

I used to pass out flyers in front of courthouses. Boy did it piss off the establishment.

I also think that if it's a case where they are trying to hang some poor SOB that you need to do your best to get through Jury Selection. Be careful in your responses. YOU might make a big difference in somebodies life.

@scuzzy: Man... thanks a lot, I really appreciate it bro!

Perhaps could we wait until Friday? It may be the case that the whole trial may be over (I hope so).

No prob - just email registrations@projectappleseed.net once you know what's up.

Question: is there a recommended target size/type that we should bring to the course?

Mahamotorworks

All targets will be provided. If you want some pre-shoot homework. Get your rifle to shoot a >2" group at 25 yards.

An update on the course: I attended the two days training and learned so much!

I think the explanation on natural point of aim alone is worth attending, it is a game changer.
@)

The usage of the sling to help stabilization to improve precision is also pretty awesome.

Cadence shooting + breathing is a game changer on shooting. Really impressive stuff!

The course was presented by two very fine gentlemen from Appleseed (I'm unsure if I can name them here, since I didn't ask permission before posting...) that were very knowledgeable, patient and capable of explaining complex marksmanship topics in an easy to understand way.

I really made the best of the course on the first day. On the second day I got admit that I was really physically tired and concerned about the long 6 to 7 hours drive back to NorCal, so my focus was not there and the 'targets never lie'!
;D

To anyone on the fence, go and attend the 25m clinic (https://appleseedinfo.org/rifle-25m/), it is totally worth i!

About the gear I've used:
a) The Ruger 10/22 60th anniversary edition worked so well! I forgot to bring the tools to be able to clean it for the second day, I only used an oiled rag on the it and a bore snake i.e. didn't field strip to clean the action.

Even with rainy weather on first day and windy/dusty weather on the second day it never skipped a beat i.e. no failures to feed/eject, etc.

I think the ammo I've used helped a bit: Federal Copper plated hollow point, BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle):
https://www.sportsmans.com/shooting-gear-gun-supplies/ammunition-ammo-for-hunting-shooting-sports/rimfire-ammo-hunting-shooting-sports/federal-byob-22-long-rifle-36gr-cphp-rimfire-rifle-ammo-450-rounds/p/1537693

b) The buttstock Magpul QD Swivel unfortunately is slightly shorter to be able to attach the USGI sling I bought.

As a result, I used the sling tied to my left arm instead.

Perhaps I can try to file 1mm or 2mm out of the sling attach point to make it fit the swivel? Or perhaps I could order a sling that would actually fit? Dunno.

c) The swivel + m-lock (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B4K7G4VJ?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1_0&th=1) worked well, but I originally mounted it on the right side of the rifle.

As a result, it would twist the front of the rifle when I used the sling to shoot.

Fortunately our instructor (rhymes with 'Mob'  ;)
was able to mount the m-lock attachment to the bottom of the rifle which improved things quite a bit.

The sad part of the mount is that it is made of 'high grade chinesium' and one of the bolts is no longer good. I guess I got what I paid on it in the end (i.e. 9 bucks).

d) A life saver was the shooting mat I brought (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BLN2S7M7?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1), as it helped to avoid getting all mudded on the first day and dusty on the second day.

Definitely worth the price to anyone attending the course.

Now I'm looking forward for the second course (the 200 yd in Sacramento) later this month. I wonder if there is any homework I should do until the day comes to attend the classes?

Another question I have is if anyone knows a range in the SF Bay Area where we can shoot prone? The one I generally go in Livermore I never saw anyone shooting prone and the rifle range only has benches.

I think was is key to really develop the concepts taught on the course is to practice frequently, otherwise we may forget the techniques to use the sling properly.

Mrs. Smith

Good morning!  It sounds like your first experience with us was a positive one. Huzzah! Welcome to your new addiction  ;D   Please do complete the survey when you get it at the end of the month. We learn so much from our students that way.

Using instructors' names here on our forum is fine, sir. In the interest of privacy, we generally stick to forum names or simply first names.

On our website you can find some pretty comprehensive documents explaining how best to prepare for each of our different clinic platforms. Visit https://appleseedinfo.org/how-to-prepare/ for those. They're very useful!

Sounds like you need to change out the rear sling swivel on your stock, but are otherwise pretty good to go! Good luck at the RKD, and have fun  :)
