Anyone from the Bayou State here on the site, please check in and make yourself known.

Looking to get the program working here in Louisiana, less than a month till our first shoot and some assistance is needed to get this off the ground. Any help is greatly appreciated.

ULShop - Lafayette

Last Event = Davilla 12/08
Next = Shurburne, LA - Memorial Day 09'

alonso1

I have talked with ULShop over the phone.  He is a one man Appleseed army over there.  But he needs some help.

Currently, Louisiana's first Appleseed is less than one month away, and there is only one pre-reg for the event.

If you live in Louisiana, please contact ULShop, he can use your assistance.

If you have family or friends in Louisiana, tell them about the Appleseed in Sherburne, LA May 23-25. That's right! 3 fun filled days of shooting and history O0

Texas crew don't be shy, Louisiana is our good neighbor.  Just think about how much time our grandparents spend at their casinos! we're practically family ;D

Anyone and everyone willing to help, we need to start networking and get Louisiana rolling.

I'll see you there.

Im new to the forum and live in Baton Rouge. Semi Retired due to disability and just recently started shooting again since leaving the military so many moons ago. Willing to do what i can here and plan to attend the event if the old bod allows. Ordered a good set of sights for the Marlin 22, cant afford to shoot up all those stores of that high priced center fire brass. Lot of people Ive talked to about Appleseed are in the same boat but almost everyone has a 22 rifle and its all good. Never seen so much interest in shooting but so many have no clue what they are going to do with it or where to learn. Lets hope this good weather continues for the event.

Just let me know, glad to do what I can.

Hey Rhodes,
A good thing you could do would be to print out flyers for the event and go to local gunshops and pass them around, talk to whoever is there, and ask if you could leave a stack on the counter. The flyers are here at the bottom of the info page: http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=6463.0

Sporting goods stores are good to pass out stuff. Anything else you can image might work too.

Call any relatives, friends, family and try and get them out.

Also contact ulshop and see if there is anything you can help him with. Contact him at chadaldridge.studio@gmail.com his info is on the above link. If there are any call in shows that are local to your area, give them a ring.

thanx,
scuzzy

Ok will start this week then. The event is only a hour drive from Baton Rouge so perfect opportunity here. Just wish I had found out sooner but aint that always the case. No idea what Im getting into here but that part of the fun. Got my membership paid and will register soon as that blasted check gets in the bank.

HOW PROMOTION WORKS!

Hey Rhodes, scuzzy, alonso1, ulshop

Deal Texas IN!   :~

scuzzy doing a lion's share from Central Texas, and
alonso1 from Houston and ole POP here from Corpus Christi are all dedicated to doing what it takes to put Louisiana on the Appleseed Map.

So, Rhodes and ulshop, don't you worry.  Promote it, they will come.

Here's  how it works.  Mrs. POP and I stopped in at Walmart the other day because she called and they had .22 ammo in stock.  When we got there a couple of fellers were buying a Remington .270, you know, filling out all the paperwork.  This is great because it means captive audience!  **)

So, we start talking about their new rifle, "nice" "reckon you can get out to 500 - 600 yds with that, huh?"  Then hand'em an Appleseed Marksmanship Clinic card and giv'em scouts Rifleman Radio Call in number because it is now 6:15 p.m.

By now there are 4 or 5 other folks waiting getting somewhat agitated with how slow the line is.  This is great!   **)  We start talking about Appleseed Marksmanship Clinics and give them a card with the call in number.

About then, while the sales lady is waiting on the NICS approval to come back on the .270 we tell her we want all four bricks of .22 left on the shelf behind her.  One of the other guys waiting says "can I get one of those?"  ...  Another perfect opportunity.  "Why certainly Sir.  and BTW have you considered coming to an Appleseed event?"  We have another one in Corpus Christi on May 16-17.

Well, by now there are 8-10 guys waiting ... And Listening.  So, we hand'em all cards, tell'em about the radio show get'em interested and ... Now Listen, this is the gospel truth  @), one of the students from the April 19 weekend walks up.  He did not see me and had not met Mrs. POP.  He just chimes in with how great the Appleseed program is  O0, how well it works, what a great time he had, and how much he learned.

Naturally, I did not want to be rude and interrupt him. ;) But, he finally saw me and it was like homecoming at Davilla.   <:)  I told Scout on the radio program it was like Providence, Choreographed by GOD.  Perfect.

All this happened within 30 minutes and we were headed back to the Hooose to get on the radio.  And these guys had a lot to think about that night.  AND THAT IS HOW PROMOTION WORKS.  O0

Having fun on the Appleseed Trail,
See you in Sherburne, Raise you one Rifleman at a time,  :~

Thanks for the lesson. Will enjoy doing what I can to promote this program and event. So many first time owners without even basic military or hunting experience with new weapons and unless they learn the rifles will sit in gun safes useless.

Rhodes

Dropped off the fliers at a gun store and the range today. Its posted on the range bulletin board and the stack is right by the sign in sheet, good people in Baker willing to do what they can to promote the event. Every one seems to know a little about it but were unaware an event was planned for this area. Going to talk to the people at Jims Firearms tomorrow and see if we can get some interest in doing some kind of promotion there even if its just leaving the fliers next to the register but will try for more. A lot of traffic though that store and many first time buyers so see what happens.

Im stressing the education in both the art of the rifle and history like you guys suggested and the tie in to the CMP, seems to work fine. Even got my Dads interest up in Montgomery AL when I told him about the store near Birmingham. He is a Korean War Vet and trained on the M1, he wants to go up there with me this summer help me check em out.

Got in pretty late so couldn't make any calls tonight will try and contact yall tomorrow but got to go pick up my wife's new stove or shes gonna shoot me.

Rhodes,

Thanks for the help on the Baton Rouge end. One of the things that made Shurburne ideal was its central location in the state, that and it's pretty well known. Most people who shoot have been there or have heard of it.

I'm having similar experiences here around Lafayette, most people have heard of Appleseed but were unaware of an upcoming event.

I'm fairly new to all things rifle so I am relying on the help of friends to guide me in getting the word out.. gun shops, sporting goods, local boy scouts, university rotc, students... anyone I can get some info to. Even if they can't make the first shoot, they might pass the word on to someone else.

Maybe after my semester ends we could try hitting up Bass Pro/Cabellas for a few hours and handing out flyers.

thanks again.

Good job O0

ULShop and Rhodes are on fire!  Keep up the good work.  You both should have my phone number, call if you need something.

Also, after the Appleseed.  I'm going to drive to the CMP in Annistion, AL to pick up some much "needed" items.  Anyone is welcome to join me.

If you plan to go to the CMP, be sure to check out the website http://www.odcmp.com and read the Eligibility Requirements.

One of those days, you know the kind that you feel like you got into a fight with a mule. Owner wasnt in at Jims but will get to them. Heh last time I was on fire I ended up getting married so dont scare me off.

No problem with handing out fliers but you need to get permission first or it may reflect badly on the event, most times its better to get them to do your work for you by getting them placed well inside the store, maybe those little cards would be better since its small and goes into a pocket instead of on the ground or trash. Glad to get together with anyone that makes it over here if for nothing else just BS about guns and and moan about ammo.  O0

People have been very receptive to this. Ive only ran into one "gun snob" type that gave me anything other than good vibes. Now I wish I knew more people in the sport but that's being fixed.

First Post  :)  Attended Sherburne WMA, Dec. 12-13, 2009 event with my son, Johnathan and had a fantastic time. Thanks to Sleepy Joe, Alonso1 and Steve (screen name?) for volunteering their precious time to pass along our history and their experience in rifle/sling shooting.

I told several co-workers about the AS during my preparations and this morning I had plenty of questions from them about the event.  Perfect time for me to share my experience.  I think I sparked interest in several folks, one of whom advised that he is going to start tracking down a good Liberty Training Rifle (LTR) candidate for the Feb. AS at Sherburne.  Yay!

Looking forward to the AAR and will post more about the weekend there, but I wanted to check-in and share my screen name with you all.  About that, my son is Johnathan, and my daughter is E.  Out of a sense of tradition or respect for time gone by, my wife and I decided that they would call me Pappa.  That makes me J and E's Pappa.....jnespappa.  EDIT: and we live in Lafayette, LA

How did it go on the last shoot?  I had my whole family signed up for Sat.  I got up at 4:45 am, woke my wife up, she did not want to get up (she was up during the night with insomnia).  I told her the rain stopped and we needed to get up and go to get there on time.  Since she did not get up, I went back to bed.  She woke me up at 6:30, we would have been late, and since it was cold and wet, I did not think my girls would last more than an hour or so, I decided we would not go. I was really frustrated.  I took a days vacation Friday to get everything ready.
I really hope you all had a good time.  We made it last May.   With kids graduating, we have so many activities going on, I cant dedicate the time now Appleseed to keep the Family involved.

Hey man, I hate to hear it, but I for one understand. I can't drive, so I have to wait for friends to go to an Appleseed. I've been waitting to go to an Appleseed for a year now. They all work, so I can't blame them, I've put the whole thing in God's hands. We still go to the range enough to keep skill up. I shot a 228 on the 22ed I believe it was. My 8 year old fired about 70 to 80 rds through my M1A/M25 from the supported pron position. His target was wasted, an Iron Maiden @ I think it was 200m. They also have an old car at 200 and I told him to shot the wheels too, I believe he may have missed 2 or 3 times. He had two adult males and one adult female as his audience. Only the woman shot it after my son. The men I guess where afraid to be out shot by my 8 yr old. Anyway we had a lot of fun. I'm still waiting to get to my first AS.  My boys and I are passing out fliers for the Sherburne Shoots. I got a printer for Christmas and I've already used up all the ink printing these fliers.   I'm here in SHREVEPORT!   Anyone else from North Louisiana?  Speak Up.

I used to live in Shreveport.  Up just south of Blanchard. I worked at UOP. There are several NM shooters up there.  I would have to get my mind in gear to remember the last names, since it has been over 10 years.    I want to get things set up in Lake Charles, maybe there is a way to get you down here.  I will put some thought to that.

Thanks one shot! I think one of these guys is going to come through for Feb. Sherburne and after that I may have things set up for Appleseed Shoots at Baudcau. That range at Baudcau is controledby Wildlife and Fisheries same as Sherburne, so I should not have a bit of trouble getting it approved. Say a prayer to the almighty for me though. Do you know about Long Range Alley?

Hope you guys can make Feb. Ive been going out to Sherburne a couple times a month its a nice place.

Understand about having problems getting around, my disability makes money, traveling, and doing things on a schedule or for long hours difficult to impossible but we do what we can right. Wish we could hold  the shoot on the 100yd range maybe we can get some 30 cal shooting done before after or at lunch during the shoot.

Baton Rouge area just on the west side the river checking in. Did one shoot in Aug '09 at Sherburne. Looking at the schedule the next one I can make is in July '10.

By then I should have the Marlin LTR with TechSights ready. Really want to score Rifleman with irons after doing it with glass. Will bring the LR-308 for more fun. And of course the Brown Bess will make an appearance for all to try.

In the meantime I've doing quite a bit of practice NRA Light Rifle prone at 50ft and 50yd on Any Sights. Since AS my scores have gone up nearly 2% at 50ft and just over 3% at 50yd. Current average is 94.6% at 50yd. Proof that AS works is on the paper.

One tidbit of advice for rimfire shooters. Find what ammo your rifle likes. Rimfires are different beasts in that each individual rifle can have a preference on what ammo shoots best out of it. Generally, standard velocity ammo running 1050fps is more accurate than high velocity. As a plus std vel is less affected by the wind than high vel. But if you get a chance do try some high vel. For some reason my modified 10/22 just loves one ammo at 25m and under outshooting high priced Eley. Past 25m the groups fall apart as the bullet goes transonic.

I'm all over the concept of shooting a Rifleman score with rack grade arms and 3 MOA ammo. However I see no reason to hinder yourself by using ammo that doesn't group well. Knowing your rifle and what it is capable of is part of being a Rifleman.
A mind is like a parachute. Neither functions properly unless fully opened.

Ellis, welcome. Oh and Merry Christmas and Happy New year! I also have only one 22LR that will even function in my AR15  22LR conversion. It's OK for AS and I'm happy with that.  Any way welcome!  I'm in Shreveport. Later!

It doesnt help matters much that Remington rimfire quality is varying so much, for some reason both my 22s love the Subsonic and the Target grades but theres a constant problem with misfires especially with the Marlin which otherwise is far more accurate than the Ruger. CCI MiniMag on the other hand just fires every time but as you pointed out is less accurate. It may be time to pass down the Marlin its had so many thousands of rounds though it I cant complain of problems now. Besides 30cal is so much more fun to shoot may just leave the 22s at home this time money permitting.

As my son pointed out, I forgot about the modification I made to the AR15 .22 converson. A few monthes ago I lapped the slide rails and then retried using other brands of .22 ammo. My boys so far have used, ( without a problem ) Winchester Wildcat High vel. LR, Armscor Precision 40 gr. std. vel. LR, Federal Champion LR and Federal 36 gr. copper plated HP High vel. LR in the 550 rd. value pack.  My kids shoot this most of the time and I couldn't tell you what Brand or velocity is doing the best. My boys say they can't tell much difference. I have a friend, Gralen, who has a Marlin 60 22LR that only seems to be reliable with High Velocity such as Yellow Jacket. He wants to use it as his AS rifle cause he has 12 children and can't afford to shot 223 or 308 to train all these kids. Trouble is this Marlin isn't accurite any more he says. He says he used to do 20 and 30 yard head shots on tree rats amd Rabbits and it seems to have lost it's accuacy over the years. He removed the barrel and cleaned it with Bore Tech, then brought it to me and I re-crowned the muzzel and soaked the bore in Kroil for 26 hours. We see no signs of fouling and put the barrel back on and will test it this week.

Rhodes, do you have a Marlin mod 60 auto? If so you can replace the barrel. Or check the crown. Or check to see if it's recoil buffer is stll in good shape. If it's cracked you can replace it, and I believe Numrich has them foe 5 or 7 bucks. I'll look see for ya and let you know if they have em in stock and the price. Gralen needs one too. Later! Just looked for that recoil buffer at Numrich, so I came back here and Modified my notes. They are showing this part as OUT OF STOCK. So I hope yours is OK. Later man!

Recoil buffer is fine I just replaced that a few months back and have a spare just in case. In fact I have a small parts kit put together for the rifle. Its possible the firing pin and/or extractor is worn, lot of rounds been though this rifle.
