Long Distance Range Wishlist

In the most recent newsletter for my local gun club this is the item that stood out to me:

We would like to showcase ideas and layouts for new club shooting ranges at the August General Meeting. Plans have been put together for new 300, 600, 1000 yard ranges, additional shooting bays and much more. If you want to take a look at the plans and make suggestions then come to the meeting.

We currently only have out to 200 yards available. So what kind of suggestions should I take to the meeting?

This club hasn't hosted any Appleseed yet, but they are aware of it and have had interest expressed by several members in getting it on their schedule.

With no idea of how you range is laid out, or avalible space. I can only reccomend that you get involved in the effort, show up on work day, weild a shovel. Volenteers who do that, get a lot of consideration when asking for improvements.

Right now the range is setup around a BIG hill.
Shooting from west to east into the hill is limited to 200 yards.
Shooting from north to south there are a number of small buildings/bays (7 I believe) limited to 15-30 yards or so.
Shooting from the east to west is 6 more bays, about 20-50 yards.

New ranges will presumably be shooting from south to north. There is apparently enough space for 300, 600, and 1000 yard ranges. Work day is a ways out as it is still another month before the general meeting where current plans will be discussed and new suggestions will be taken into consideration.

I'm sure many different ideas have already been taken into consideration for the initial planning. Any particular things to keep a look out for that would be particularly good for an Appleseed KD? The 600 yard range would be awfully nice for a KD shoot. The first things that come to mind are a target pit and shooting berms at every 100 yards.

I would not be suprised if a pit and fireing lines are part of the plan.

There is a meeting for range members to bring forward their suggestions already planned next month. We plan to go and are wanting to make sure we make the range as Appleseed friendly from the get-go as possible in these planning stages. If pits and lines at every 100m aren't mentioned we will be there to mention them. (:

You know, it's a lot more convenient is you have one firing line, and racks of targets every 100 yards.  If you're back east with limited real estate and a narrow firing lane, having one target line and moving the firing line might make sense.  But if you've got the great Western outdoors at your disposal, spread out a bit and save schlepping the gear.

You might want to contact eaglescouter and Norcal22Gal out of Redding, CA.  They work two ranges that have FD capability out to 500 yards, using a single firing line.

It depends on the intended use. Formal matches like High Power, Mid Range, Long Range and Palma can make better use of a set of pits and then firing lines at the required distances. Otherwise you are running walk and paste or alternately dealing with the issues of moving people between multiple target lines.

While I agree that a single firing line and multiple target lines makes sense for some things (silhouette and steel matches in particular). It makes for a long day when you have a multiple relays and you need to score each line for each relay. I even prefer the use of pits and relays for Appleseed KD. While line changes are made the pit crew can get Q&A, Dangerous Old Men, the Ramseur "Rifleman's Dance" story and other things.
