Hello All,

My friend and I have a little competition going between the two of use. We are trying to get Rifleman, if not Distinguished, with each type of action and with/without optics if possible.

So far him and I have done semi with optics, and bolt with optics (Distinguished). I'm building my next rifles for each without optics. However, the questions start coming with the other actions.

For the lever guns, I've started working with a Henry .22. I noticed the new speed loader on the store. I'm going to try and pick one up this winter. As for pumps, I have an old J.C. Higgins, but I was looking at one of the Henry pumps. For single-loaders, I was thinking an old Winchester low wall in .22, or a Martini Henry Cadet in .22. I've practiced single-loading a bolt gun and I think is within my realm of possibilities. Also if the barrels aren't threaded, I'll probably thread them. I almost shoot exclusively suppressed now.

I was curious if any one has any experience with using pumps, levers, and single loaders for Appleseed. Also, I have a 10/22 SBR, and I was curious of the opinions of using SBR's.

My first Appleseed I qualified with a Henry .22 lever action - it was the only .22 I had at the time.  It's no more or less difficult than qualifying with a bolt gun - just different.  You still have to break then reacquire your NPOA after each shot.  When you bring it to an Appleseed the Shoot Boss will tell you how to handle the loading and transitioning with a tube magazine.

Awesome, thanks for heads up. Too bad there aren't any magazine fed .22 lever guns.

I qualify with a marlin 60, and I made my own speed loaders out of arrow shafts and automotive vacuum caps.  Cost just a couple bucks each.

I was not aware of that one. I'll need to acquire one. I say thank you, but my wallet is in disagreement.

What are the rules for shooting with a tube magazine?

Do you get any special modifications for AQT?

I don't know. I haven't been to one where some one used a tube gun.

If using arrow shafts, they can be cut to the correct length for "Red Coats' or the normal stages, then they can be pre-loaded without counting rounds. I have some just for this purpose for this reason. I normally have loaded 10, shot two, broke NPOA, then re-acquired NPOA and continued shooting to eliminate the hassle of finding the ejected non-fired round. I first thought of using the 11 count with the third round as a snap cap, but realized it could cause confusion as to whether the round was a misfire or short shot lodged in the barrel.

Just bought an old Marlin 56 a half hour ago. Lever gun with a magazine. I use to shoot a 925, so I got a ton of magazines for it.

I've seen a couple folks use the 'Spee-D-Loader' for tube mags to good effect during rapid AQTs.  A bit more practice and dexterity required to use effectively, but the upside is that prepping is much easier on the thumbs than 10/22 mags.  :)

One of the sponsors on Rimfire Central makes some very nice tubes called "Quick Fill Speedtubes".  My father used them at the last Appleseed.  https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=191481

Where are the rules for AQT qualification? I'm interested in Appleseed but need to read the rules, especially in reference to different actions ,specifically bolt actions,I do have several action types  including Semi, bolt and lever and dropping block but my best and most accurate are bolt and semi .my very best is a bolt,
Forgive me ,but I've been interested for years, I am Capt of a NYSporterifle team and would enjoy a different discipline and might bring my team members into it also during our off season time.I'd also be interested in a AQT target scaled to a 50 ft. Indoor range.I'm trying to figure it out and could print it with my printer but would rather buy if available.

Hi shootrj2003,

This is a pretty old thread so let me see if I can answer your question. The AQT does not have any rules around different actions. It is normally shot with a semi auto rifle but many like the extra challenge of a bolt action.  In the rapid fire stages, (Two separate stages) you will have 55 and 65 seconds to transition from standing to seated or prone and then load and fire 10 rounds.   The only accommodation we make for different types of rifles is if you are using a tube fed rifle. Loading that in a short time is difficult so we have a work around.

I hope that answers your question.

I was curious if any one has any experience with using pumps, levers, and single loaders for Appleseed. Also, I have a 10/22 SBR, and I was curious of the opinions of using SBR's.

I too have been playing around with different actions for the 25m AQT. So far I've qualified with semi-auto, bolt action and pump.  The pump action is my Remington 572A. Next will be Browning model II lever action. The last challenge will be a Thompson Center Contender single shot.

Should be able to get to all that sometime this summer in South Dakota.

Howdy from Houston(ish) and a newest guy. First 25M clinic the end of April. There is a fascinating book titled "The Art of Rimfire Accuracy" by Bill Calfee. One chapter discusses threading a previously unthreaded barrel and how it almost guarantees some degree of loss of accuracy. Your quest sounds really interesting. Good luck with it.
