Title: Instructors Needed! Shortages and volunteers report here
Post by: ItsanSKS on September 04, 2010, 08:13:03 AM
Folks, we have a few events coming up that could use your help.  If you have shot 210+ or greater, and attended at least two Appleseed events, now is the time to give back to the program that helped you achieve your current level of marksmanship proficiency.

While the Florida cadre of instructors has been very dedicated to our cause, we are fast approaching a time where there will be more events than our small team can handle.  I urge you to step up and don the Orange Hat.  You will find your time spent with Project Appleseed to be some of the most gratifying possible, and an opportunity to meet many fellow patriotic Americans.

Some of the events coming up, which desperately need your assistance:

Hernando Sept. 18th (one-day event)
Pensacola, October 2,3
Ft. Lauderdale October 2,3
Bunnell, Nov. 6,7th

Please, please, help us staff these events.  The last thing I want to do is tell our fellow Americans "Sorry, there just aren't enough people willing to teach YOU how to shoot".

The motto of Project Appleseed, and the reason for our tremendous growth, is "Learn Today, Teach Tomorrow".  If you found your time at an Appleseed to be worth while; if you learned just one thing from our volunteer instructors, please consider giving back to this fine organization.

We cannot succeed in our mission without YOUR help!

-ItsanSKS

Hernando Sept. 18th (one-day event)   -   Maybe, if you need me.

Pensacola, October 2,3   -  No, other event going on

Ft. Lauderdale October 2,3   -   Ditto as above

Bunnell, Nov. 6,7th  -  Pretty far but could make it if no one else steps up.

Regards...Martin

'SKS has offered to run the Hernando one-day in September and I will take the October single day event there. Clinnon has offered to help with promo and instructing in Ft Lauderdale, but likely need another IIT or two for that one.

We also need to PROMOTE these dates, so anyone who can do some BOTG, or Emailing to raise interest for these events, please step forward and be heard!

panhead has agreed to sponsor us at Hernando for September and he's working on clearing his schedule for November as well - way to go sir!

Many thanks for letting us know what you can do marrandy - now who else knows well what they are about?  :sos: :sos:

Just in from SavageShootr! (the tireless individual who keeps the schedule up to date, and by tireless and just in, I mean she's working on Labor day weekend to do it)

More events in need of staffing and these are tough - Pensacola! Time for car pooling.  :sos: :sos:

October 2-3, 2010   NEW
December 4-5, 2010   NEW

Who's in?

Has anybody seen this page for the Project 1000? Look at Florida! http://www.appleseedinfo.org/Project1000/

Thanks to ItsaSKS, we are at 0, meaning he has acquired the needed number of events for Florida to hold up her end of the program. Now, we the instructors needs to step up and man these events pronto and also get them promoted, so we don't look silly standing  around all by ourselves!

No need to sit on our laurels either, just because we have made "0", we can always take up the slack of some of the struggling states by adding more. More events, means more shooters, means more instructors, means more awakend Americans - the reason we are all here.  ..:.. ..:.. ..:..

Now I know some of us are in pretty strung-out shape, but we gotta stay frosty - we can't afford to let one of these events git canceled.

And, I know we have a lot of IITs that have been busy elsewhere, taking care of kith and kin, but now's the time to step up - we're close to the finish line and no time to let up! Please step up and make one of these fine events your own. The last elections here in Pinellas stand as cold, hard, proof that Americans are not worthy of Liberty (keep re-electing same old people). We need to educate them on the finer points of the cost of Liberty. Who better to do that that the people who know the story - who know the cost all too well - volunteers in Appleseeds!  O0

Please don't make me call and beg - I hate groveling and you hate hearing it.  :'(

Ft. Lauderdale October 2,3   -   No, other event going on

Pensacola October 2-3, 2010   No, other event going on

ItsanSKS! Emergency sir! Emergency! Yikes!

Florida has only two active IITs left (3 counting Ms. Clinnon as she is promoting and serving at Pop's October 2/3)!  :sos: :sos: :sos: :sos:

All of them sharp looking orange hats handed out and only three to show for it here. We're gonna have to answer to Fred for this for sure.  &)

Well, we can't let this slow us down - we've got three and we'll git more - full steam ahead! Damn the torpedoes!  :--- :--- :--- :---

I just looked Pop's gun club up - I will have to take Alligator Alley to git there and won't even be going diving! It's just over 4 hours for me and 5 for Clinnon - anybody want a ride? Foolish to take any more vehicles than needed for this trip.

I'm trying to see what my work schedule will allow for before committing to either Ft L or Pensacola.  I will be at one or the other.  I'll go ahead and reg for Hernando too.   Will see if my brother can step up for that event.

Huzaah! That makes we three for that one!

Heck, one more and I can take my usual "administrative posture", working little more than my finger (for pointing out tasks needing completion) to an able crew. The note taking alone is a lot of work you know.  ^-^

Just wait'll ya'll make SB - the pressure and stress of it - seeing that everyone has enough work to keep them occupied and all - it's tough!  :cool2:

Seriously, it's a long drive and I mush appreciate the effort. We'll take some "ordinary" Americans and see if we cain't make 'um even better!

Pop's looks like a great venue - see ya'll soon.

Hmm, if we get enough at pops, perhaps we can rotate some range time in for the instructers to do an AQT or two........hint hint, nudge nudge.  :--- :--- :cool2:

Always a good idea, even if its just  10-20  rounds.

I'm all for that, but understand that safety is job #1 and marksmanship ed is job #2. That leaves precious little room for us. The cobbler's kids go without shoes you know. :)

I have instructed and run more shoots than I can recall, but I can recall how many times I got shoot myself - three. One was some sighters on a 1" square and 5 rounds for educational purposes only was the second . The third was an AQT and some KD when there were less KD shooters than targets.

In the second and third cases, I was afforded an SBIT that was running the event so well, that I was but a "fifth wheel". Instructor to student ratio is what determines the possibility - that and the experience level of staffing. The ed process is not limited to the attendees - it involves we the instructors as well. Time spent shooting is time lost in learning our craft.

Sacrifice is one of the aspects of instructing and shooting in general is one such sacrifice. It's a fair trade IMHO. We'll see how it goes - ya never know. It is important that we stay sharp, but the most effective way to do that for all concerned is dry-fire.

Some time back, instructors shooting at an event was impossible owing to the ratio - lots of shooters and few instructors. Of late, the lines are so spares that we end up with a high, instructor to student ratio and that is not a good thing. We are failing to get the word out sufficiently to maximize the benefits of our sacrifice.

Might be time to work up another KDC, cuase that's for instructors only and it offers a lot more than a few rounds down range during an event at 25M - a KDC is the real deal and offers indispensable info and skills.

Look forward to seeing you guys soon,
PH

I think we mostly understand the push to get as many people through as possible.  Getting the numbers up at the events would help significantly.  Have you checked the  'occupancy rate'  for Florida Events this year ?

I quickly crunched some numbers.

Average total occupancy 52.57%   -   occupancy (best ave. 93.48% (Starke), Worst ave. 25.75% (Myakka).  Single event best 98.2% St. Augustine  Worst 5.7% Gainesville.

My aim, with the agreement of my wife,  was to shoot/Appleseed a maximum 12 times per year.  aka Once per month.  I also want to shoot 100 yards through 1,000 yards 3-4 times per year.  If that doesn't happen at an Appleseed event, then those 3-4 shoots will subtract leaving only 8-9 Appleseeds.  Unfortunately, that's the way it is.  We all allocate time as we see fit that meets our individual needs

YMMV.

marrandy,
I fully understand and greatly appreciate your efforts. Not sure what Pop's has, but not likely long range. We will have a KDC here before too long and of course the IBC will involved full distance.

Sly,
Sounds good to me - does TF know the plan? We need somebody to do that darn Pensacola. He is the NFG isn't he.  >:D Many thanks for you help sir - please to give my best to mama.

Hey, looks like we have seven people still active in Fl program, judging by replies here to 'SKS's post. Let's crunch those numbers. Let's see, Fred sent me 50 orange hats and I have maybe 5 left. Hmmmm..............  !@#)

Bunnell, Nov. 6,7th

I was looking at the above dates and somehow they don't show up in the Florida upcoming events. Bunnell is only 50 miles from my house, that would be perfect.

Anyone else want to help for the One day at Hernando on Sep 18th ?

What about Pensacola.  That's a 8-hour drive from St. Petersburg for me.  I'll help if I have to but Myakka (1 Hr. 10 mins, 2Hrs. 20 round trip) and Hernando (1 hr. 40 mins and 3 Hr. 20 mins round trip)  are my local ranges.

We need people more local to support these ranges where possible.  Its Just more efficient that way.

We have two events at Pensacola. First one is same weekend as Ft. Lauderdale and it's ready to be canceled for lack of staffing - I'll either have to run it myself or make the call to cut it shortly. I have made a plea to AL for help, but Bama is tied up and no other takers have stepped up as yet.

It's an 8 hour drive for me, so I understand that it is a tough row to hoe. If I call to cancel it, Florida will drop below goal, as we are at "0" right now for Project 1000 (See website), so I ma just suck it up and work it back to back after Myakka the weekend before. Anyone wanna ride with me?  :sos:

Anyone up for seeing the panhandle?  :cool2:

Marrandy,
Ah yes, I can see it now - hired "guns" in from out of town to bring the heritage to the panhandle. If it falls upon us to do this orphaned task, we can ride together to save fuel. Been some time since I drove 8 hours straight - at least without diving at the other end and since I near gave that hobby up for Appleseeds - been a long time any way I slice it.

We'd have to leave fairly early on Friday to get there in time to set up line - or leave midday just to git there in time to sleep long enough to get up early enough to set line up early on Sat. As it is a new venue to me and we will be horribly short staffed - best to set up line Friday PM and get lay of land, so to speak.

As to leaving - not the man I like to pretend I once was, so not sure if I could safely make trek home after event on Sunday - either we try and trade off driving, or leave following AM.

Thanks,
PH

We are talking 4/5th December...right.

Yes, we can take turns driving.  I'm used to doing 8-12 hours.

At this point in time, Friday the 3rd December would be OK to travel up.

That's of course, unless some  'locals'  from nearby Al, LA and GA  show-up.

I'll PM the Two guys close by to see what they are up to.

The range set up the line the last time we were there. (PC)

I am slated to run down with Clinnon on the 2 & 3 of Oct to Lauderdale. It really makes no dif which one I go to, it just leaves Clinnon with a 7 hour drive by herself if I go to PC.

I hate to see us cancel an event.

It would be great if you can do it, but I have near resolved myself to making it happen if I must. Back to back events are hard on me, but good for my delivery.  ;D

From a proximity standpoint, it looks like Bill's closer to Ft Lauderdale.  If I recall right, I think either event would be about the same amt of travel for Bruce.  All other things equal, I would be right happy to have either or both of you with me in Ft Lauderdale, but I don't want to draw down our talent pool so far that another event would suffer.   I will call Pop's tomorrow and make sure we have range accommodations.  There is an air mattress friendly admin trailer with a/c,  hopefully we can use it again.

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone at this event. Last time was a sellout.  THis trip, we've got 12 registered 2 weeks in advance.  I am really looking forward to this.  :---

Thanks bill-o-rites!   If Ft. Lauderdale has coverage enough, I will instead be doing an event locally to benefit the candidate running for the 3rd congressional district. The incumbent of 18 years represents all that is wrong with our government today and I am doing everything I can to see that unhappy situation change. After the election in November, time will be a bit more free and I would like to do much more Appleseeding. In any event, I hope to see some of you in St. Augustine in October. Huzzah!

9mm4545...

Pensacola is still sorely in need of quality ppl like yourself...

We have a shoot boss from 'bama, we owe it to him to support him with the best staff possible.  Last time we were at P'cola it was a full line of 50.  We needed LSO's and RSO's.  I have a pm in to Lady Zipper, who is an excellent IIT and fine all around ppl,  but we need more capable bodies to bring this off proper!

I could use a spare red hat in Ft Lauderdale.  I have a full and talented IIT crew, but if something happens to me, I'd need another red hat in reserve.  We are up to 19 of 32 sold, I have no doubt we'll be sold out by the time the event comes off!  ..:..

TF,
Sorry about the delayed response but what I was afraid of came to pass and my father, ailing for years, finally passed on to a better world Sunday morning. We drove for two days and are now in Arkansas to support my mom and sister. It would be unlikely that I could be in Pensacola by next weekend so I will have to reluctantly pass up that event. I will most certainly be in St. Augustine and Bunnell and can easily help out in the Volusia events coming up. I will get with instructor scheduling as soon as I get back from the current ordeal and get onto the events through the winter. Sorry I can't be there in Pensacola. Bruce

9mm4545,
No apology needed sir. You take care of your kin now. I know that I speak for all of us here, when I offer my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences sir. I lost my own father about three and half years back and I still miss him.
Take care and take your time. I look forward to working with you again.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. My father taught me how to shoot and instilled a love for firearms and liberty. In his honor I have signed up for another AS event. AS came along just a bit late for him to become involved but I know if he was able, he would be there with us. In going through old photos, I came across a shot of my Dad teaching me to shoot with a pump action .22. I was 4 years old at the time. Wish I still had that old Winchester... Wish I still had my Dad too...

Correction: I was 8 years old at the time. The pickup truck was 4 years old! Don't know about the Winchester.

The memories of a shared passion are some that will stay with you.  As is often heard around here, "To Remember, is to Honor".  Hold on to those memories.  Cherish the moments that you both shared, and he will be with you forever.  In this manner, he will be with you always- an ever-present companion, able to advise and console in moments of need, and able to share in moments of triumph and success.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours, and I sincerely hope ya'll are doing okay.  You should know by now that you are part of the family here, and I am confident that I can speak for us all in saying that if you should need anything, you have but to ask.  We're here for ya, through thick and thin.

I look forward to seeing you again on the trail, and hope that you will join us again very soon.

Title: YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!
Post by: ItsanSKS on October 09, 2010, 08:12:14 PM
It is with my sincerest apologies that I have to announce that I will be on temporary hiatus from Appleseed-related activities.

Many of you have already noticed that I have not answered emails or returned for about the last week or so.

In that time, and for the foreseeable future, I am working 10 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Thankfully, this stretch of work is allowing me to catch up on some long-neglected bills.  Unfortunately, I have zero time for anything unrelated to work.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  If you REALLY need to get in touch with me, you may be able to do so via cell phone.

Until such time as I am able to return to my regularly scheduled duties, and my SC responsibilities, I ask that you please contact PHenry, Marrandy, Willorith, or ThaiFighter.

Thank you for your understanding,

ItsanSKS

PS: any of you SB's reading this, I could REALLY use someone to step in for me up in St. Augustine- I just don't think me taking the weekend off is going to fly with my employer- its crunch time, and the job HAS to be done by Nov. 6th.  We're working 7-10's until its done, with some days working 12 hours.....

I am scheduled to work as an IIT at the St Augustine event next weekend.  Please let me know who will be the Shoot Boss.  I live 30 minutes away from the St Augustine range so I can do anything needed on Friday afternoon or evening and Saturday early morning to help set up.

I am ready to do whatever I can for this event.  Just let me know.

Ok - I'm curious.

How long does it take for the info from evenbrite to appear on that page ?

Is this a manual process ?

Can it be fixed so its automatically updated ?

Can...no...I can't think of another question...just kidding  :-)

That page is updated once a week.

It is a manual process and Hawkhavn does it.

As far as I know, no, it can't be changed to automatically update.

Are you sure? ;-)

Now I've got a question for you, do you know why Nov. 6-7 Fort Lauderdale, FL isn't on the Instructor Schedule, Eventbrite, shoot schedule, or the EIP?

No, that's why I had   Huh? unlisted   next to it.

I've talked/PM'd PHenry and SavageShootr about it.

Hopefully it will be sorted out by tomorrow.

Everyone.  Check here http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=8859.0    for event staffing.

When you volunteer for an event, in addition to PM'ing  "Instructor Scheduling", please make sure you PM the Shoot Boss (SB), if there is one listed.  In Douglas's case, PM  "ThaiFighter"  to ensure he get's a  'heads up'.  There is often a few days delay in your appearance on the staffing board and the sooner the SB knows your coming, the better.  Plus its more direct.

marrandy,
Here's what I can tell you so far sir:

I have taken Bunnell and evidently despite their already incredible dedication to date - Willorith and Brown Bess will also serve there (they know how I am accustomed to simply pointing a lot and doing little and hated to see me actually work apparently).

ThaiFighter is taking Myakka, so that Willorith can take New Smyrna.

If all goes well for me in NYC on 18th, I sould be able to make Hernando on 20th. If not - only 3 showed up at last single day event (one being Doubles grandson!), so we could cancel that one worst case scenario.

I just received a call from Bama, SC for AL and he is working to take Pens over on a semi-permanent basis with his local cadre. He asked only that we book no more than two event per year there in 2011. He will keep me informed as to his progress on covering the Dec event. He has four SBs and another in the pipe.

So, not as bad as it seems, but that's for this year which will soon be last year - the only "easy" year we'll ever have.  ^-^

Thanks for keeping us all informed and aware - makes it a lot easier to keep on top!  O0

I'll cover Hernando if Trey can't make it.  Nov 6-7 I will likely be in Ft. Lauderdale.

I may be able to take Pensacola in Dec.  My contract with TECO is up in mid November.   If I don't pick up anything right away, then I have time on my hands until mid Jan.

I've been holding off reserving dates until I know more about my situation.  One way or another, I should be there to assist the FL crew as a red hat or SB in some capacity or other.

Well, in that case I'd be happy to IIT.  I'll try for both days, sunday for sure.  My work schedual will dictate otherwise and I wont know until the week leading up to the event.

The range is a nice range and the students that came out in October were fantastic; I see no reason why November wouldnt be another great appleseed in Ft Lauderdale.  :---

Perhaps if we cannot get a shoot boss for the weekend (thus canceling the event) some IIT's and local students who may the be otherwise freed up would like to hop on down for a one day, practice shoot, outside of Appleseed, but still in the spirit of it.

I have attended 2 Appleseeds (Aug in Gainesville and Sept in St. Augustine).  I shot Rifleman at both.

I would like to someday serve as an Instructor. I joined the Forum today and I have seen references to "downloading an Instructor's Manual".  Is this possible?  Can you advise me how?

Thanks,

Joe-NFlorida, Wow It scared Me when I saw this Dead Subject appear again!

You must have a Shoot Boss Verify Your Info  and then Let Instructor Scheduling Know that You are an Orange Hat before You can go to the TIPS section of this forum. TIPS is the area where  You can down load the Instructors Manual.

Who was the Shoot Boss at Your last Shoot? Did You ask the Shoot Boss If You could become an Orange Hat Instructor at that Shoot?

After You get this straight, There will be an Instructors Boot Camp in the Very near Future, I Highly recommend You attend the IBC!

Please see on the Florida section of this Forum, Called Stateboards, a Post called  I need a show of hands by 9mm4545. It addresses the IBC (Instructors Boot Camp)

Good Luck in all of Your Travels, I hope to meet You on the Appleseed Trail as a fellow Instructor In Training.

Thanks for the replies.

The shootboss was 9mm4545. He did not ask me about an orange hat, but I figure I will keep working at it until he does.  It may have been a time thing.  I did not shoot rifleman until the end of the day on Sunday when we started the Rapid Fire AQTs.  I can shoot fast and accurate, but I have some mobility problems on dropping into position for the sitting and prone.  Ironically I do much better on the RF because I can shoot quickly and get into the next position at my own slower pace, then shoot quick again to beat the time.  So, I shot the score the last three times, but the targets were being scored while we were taking down the pop up shade tarps to beat the coming rain storm.  There was just time to get the patch and run for the trucks.

I will see 9mm4545 again in Gainesville in Nov or in St Aug in Dec.  So, it can wait until the next shoot, I am not trying to rush things. I was just hoping to start studying the manual. The range instructions are a little different from what I used to use - so I figured I would get used to them.

Thanks again for the replies.

Joe

I am in desperate need of additional instructors and a shoot boss for an inaugural event in Hollywood Florida on November 10-11. We have 29 shooters already signed up and only one instructor! This represents a return to a very underserved part of our state that is long overdue in coming. So, help bring the message of Appleseed to South Florida. The weather should be great and the facility is top-notch. Anyone?

Sly223 stepping on PHenry's little girly-man toes? Yikes!

Evidently Alkeford got to me first. He could sell sand in desert. Like a freight train - nothing can stop him.

Looks like we may end up with long line and will need all the help we can muster, or else you, me and Alkeford will be very busy fellows. There used to be this pretty lady instructor that worked Myakka. I can recall her shooting in pouring rain one day in particular. Brown hair, lovely smile - seems like she had a baby some time back. Sly - you know anyone that fits that description?

^-^

I see BilloRites and Smoakin Gun have stepped up - they must not have noticed I was listed as SB. Phew! Close one.  ;D

Seriously, 9mm4545 was out there today to meet with range peeps and he feels that may cause even more to sign up. I think we are already at 36 - cap is 50. I mean really, ya'll know how I like to sit and point right? I could end up, well, I could end up, up and on my F E E T (had to spell it - hate to even say it out loud), working the firing line. What if I have to tell a strike? Agghhhhhh!

We celebrated 12 years, yesterday! ^:)^
I did have her back one Sat. on my line we were in extream weather and she shot the highest score on the line with a 199.
She is working on the hand gun discipline to guard the babies when I'm gone!
I will ask her to double every year so,she will need to show up to a full weekend or two in 2013! ..:..

Myakka on the 15/16 Dec is shaping up into a nice little shoot.

I know this is a tight family time of the year but if you have a day you can spare that weekend it would be much appreciated.

In Liberty :F

Not sure exactly how to sign up to attend as IIT, but on May 19th I should be able to attend as instructor in training, at CFRPC in Orlando.

To sign up to work a shoot go to the TIPS section of this site, it's under the heading  INSTRUCTOR INFO. Click it, you will be redirected to the Instructor Tips section.

On the tool bar on the top of the page scroll over to Sign Up then click on Sign Up.

It's pretty self explanatory from that point.
