Appleseed returns to Calverton.  Fred, I hope you will be happy to know that several of your alumni from 2006 (7?) were in attendance and very glad to see us back.  One shooter told me that he had felt "honored" at that previous shoot by being in the presence of your modest yet marked notability and your firm and passionate dispensation.  Those are my fancy words, but excuse me trying to paraphrase a guy who was real psyched we were back because he enjoyed your event so much.  I can only hope that someday my history should evoke such memories among shooters three years later.  Let me thank you for finding this place and telling me about it back at Ramseur 2-0-8.  It's actually a great range, if you don't mind the whizzing sound over your head about every 30 minutes or so.  Way over your head, but it's kinda cool.  I have identified this sound conclusively.  According to Peterson's Field Guide, it's a type of song-bird, of the species "Rico-Jay", common to regions down-range.

Yesterday, Friday, I drove the hour to the range.  That's right, one hour, kDan's shortest AS commute ever - by half.  Very nice.  I'm actually home, fed, and bathed right now on a Saturday night during an Appleseed week-end.  Unbelievable.   Doesn't feel right somehow - like, where's the 1-minute rice, beef jerky and jug of water - but I'll take it.  Freakin' Hot Dogs - ENOUGH!  So I drove to the range and set up the line, put up my HQ tent and dumped a bunch of cardboard under a tarp.  It was hot.  Like real hot.  I was dizzy walking back and forth looking for my pliers or hammer or screwdriver or whatever I can't even remember it was so hot.  The ground on the target line would have been wet with my sweat but since this range is a sand-pit, the moisture disappeared into the void and then the sand blew up in my face and filled my boots.  Wanna talk about a sand-box?  Well, Calverton is literally a sand-box, with the boards around it and the Tonka toys and everything.  Giant babies picking you up and sticking you in their mouths.  Kinda.

Today it took a while to get started.  It's a hike from the gate to the range and this and that, but by 10am we had rounds down range.  Josey Wales and YankeePatriot saved my butt!  Brand-new IIT's that know what this is ABOUT!  I set this shoot up knowing full well that NY gets no respect and that lots of folks are unwilling to even come near it.  Maybe it's the matter of driving without a sidearm, or if it's a hatred of the UN (it's a building), or the fear that one may be exposed to Hip-Hop music while parked on the Long Island Expressway...  Any way there are a bazillion people on Long Island and a certain percentage of them shoot.  I think we could keep this going out there for a while yet.

Well, we ran through the standard morning stuff, then everybody broke for lunch and we sat under the tarps (god i hope they're all there again tomorrow).  After lunch a little ball and dummy then a rapid fire drill and the first strike.  I tried out my new Tipton plastic snap-caps.  It's nice to run b+d on garands and such without the fear of slam-fires.  Never mind the fact that you can NOT fool an experienced garand or m14 shooter manipulating the action to create a battery bolt on an empty chamber.  Then Positions, Transitions, and an AQT.  Then another one and a Red Coat and Wa-la, the day's over and done.  In the interim, we had some rain.  Good, healthy rain, in giant thumping drops the size of a quail's egg.

My man from Van Etten last year, Chun, brought some of his NYPD brethren and sistren, six to be exact - I'm not sure how many are cops - to the event.  I'm sad they are only one day shooters.  They've got a few Rifleman candidates among them.  Howard, it's time brother.  We had a family of six next to them.  A couple of young men were set up as "Designated Marksmen" and plinked away all day from sand-bags (well, my bed-roll in twain).  Josey's buddy is another LEO and kept looking at me funny, but I didn't let on.   @  Josey's wife helped out a lot in the morning, then shot her husband's rifle while he watched.  teehee - Welcome to the hat, my friend.

On the other side, the right side of the line, where we placed the center-fires, we have at least a couple of folks that will earn their patches tomorrow.  I don't want to neglect to mention the couple in the middle.  We've got an IIT in the making right here, maybe two.  Southern NY could use an instructor team like these two - very serious about shooting.

Did I say "southern NY"?  Well, I meant "LONG ISLAND!"

Thank you all.

Until tomorrow,
kDan

30 shooters! Great.

I knew Josey Wales would be a perfect IIT 10 minutes after meeting him for the first time. A real learner and teacher.
Lets give http://www.longislandfirearms.com/forum/ a shout out for helping spread the word of Appleseed with our own area on their site.

Wish I could have been there, everyone I have talked to about this were big time enthusiastic. Hungry for some shooting and history.
I wont miss the next one.

I love pictures and I found some taken by a shooter from Saturday.....

The BAR in the pictures is an interesting choice of rifles for an Appleseed.
I presume that was one of the semi-auto versions... can you own NFA items in NY State?

Only specific AOWs (Serbu Super-Shorty comes immediately to mind). Anything with a happy-switch is verboten outside agency usage.

Wow, looks like we'll be back in October.  And again next year, I hope several times.  DAR on LI?  Not sure, but all the shooters were very smiley and full of suggestions as to how we could set up an AS for a group the size of the population of Iceland.

No one made Rifleman, but I saw lots of improvement all along the line.  We've got at least two folks here that are bound and determined to take the cap and help out.

It was hot today, dangerously so. I can't imagine why anyone would want to go to the Hamptons in August.  Give me a hillside covered with trees and a little burbling brook.  You can have the beach, nothing but a desert with sharks.  I know our next event will be much cooler.  Can't wait to show off my hoodie.

Josey Wales, and YankeePatriot saved my butt, and saved AS on Long Island.  I don't really know what else to say, but I've kinda had my eyes opened a bit.  Look for an internal AAR.  I may or may not...

Shout out to LongIslandFirearms.com, and Rich who won the raffle.  To Pete with the BAR, my God - he put his .22 away on Sunday and pulled out the BAR again, rather than deal with sighting in...  Lex Ordo for representing m14tfl.com.  HBM with his comm bloc ordnance and his rapid rapid-fire cadence (hey Rambo, goin' somewhere?). Brad and Teresa for exemplifying an AS romantic week-end get-away.  And all the rest.  Dad and Daughter.  Mom and sons.  Vietnam Vets and cops from Port Jeff.

What can I say about Harry, the range owner and Tyler, his son.  Harry left us alone on a private line for two days, and Tyler is a true stand-up guy.  I can see him in an orange cap someday.  I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a long and beneficent relationship.

And I'm going to sleep.

I don't think that will be a problem with this group.

Hi everyone, hope it's ok for me to post in this part.  :) I was at the shoot and am an LIF member. Just wanted to come over here and personally thank everyone from AS for a really great shoot.

I thanked kDan and the 2 IITs in person, but, I wanted to come here and tell you all what a great job they did. a few men down, they still ran a great shoot for us. I can't say enough about their enthusiasm, patience, and low-key advice. the shoot was better than I even dared hope it would be.

despite the satan's spit hot weather, it was something I will always be glad I did. kDan, you did a great job (I was the guy in the yellow t-shirt you liked, and was using my Mauser there on Saturday only). the IITs were great too, and JoseyWales was on my end , and I have to say he was especially encouraging to use older guy on the right side of the line using the WWII military surplus stuff (a BAR, and M1, and my Mauser).

you all at AS are a top flight organization with a great cause. just wanted to come here and say it in person (I already said it on our site.  8) ). please let us know what ever you need us to do to get another event scheduled at Calverton (October?). your wish is my command.  O0

thanks again guys, wonderful time!!!!

Check to see if there's a "Modify" in the upper right corner of the post. If so, there's your edit access.

I want to thank kDan Al and Nick for running a great shoot at Calverton. I took a lot out of it. I wish I did better but it let me know what I have to do. Practice. I'm hoping to be at the next one. Thanks again for having a great and safe shoot.

i wanted to thank kdan josey wales and yankee patriot for a good time. everyone from lif cant wait for another appleseed. i think it will be much bigger this time. thanks for all the advice and i hope to see everyone here in october.

LongIslandFirearms

On behalf of Long Island Firearms, thank you for such kind words.  I know my members are eager in attending another event.  I have a complete board setup for Appleseed and the responses are overwhelmingly positive. Folks are itching for another event and I can only image what the turnout will be.  Heck, there's even a polls started asking who will be attending.

I'm certain you will gain the people you need to hold another event in October.  Additionally if there is anything we can do to make future events successful, please let contact me @ stevieb@longislandfirearms.com.

PS: I'll personally volunteer my time for the success of future events like this. Thus keep me in mind for any assistance you might need.

I just got back from a backpacking trip.  Summer's over for me.  I'm glad so many people had such a satisfying time and look forward to a shoot in October.  I spoke with Harry yesterday and he just said, "Set it up."

We get our own range and pick our own dates.  Now all we need is to get some folks to shoot Rifleman and take the cap, then this thing is gonna run itself.

Thanks again everybody.

Buzzworth and b9, I'm counting on you guys to make October.

An October Appleseed is DEFINITELY generating a heck of a lot of interest over on AR15.COM as well. The only thing I thought worth mentioning is that the Langhorne Rod & Gun Club in PA is holding their Zombie Shoot that weekend on Saturday, October 24th. It might be better to move the October Appleseed to the prior weekend of the 17th-18th so no one has to choose between the two. Might even help 'em rid us of a few more zombies with their newly acquired improved marksmanship skills.

Vergeltung

good point stout. I'm not sure there's a date set yet.

peteinnewyork

Just checking in guys.. please let us know as soon as the date is set so we can start getting the word out!

Vergeltung

thanks Pete. As far as I know, we have a "practice" in the works, as well as a full-fledged event in the works for October. thanks for posting your interest!!

kDan

We have confirmation with Harry at Calverton Shooting Range for the week-end of October 17 - 18.

Check the schedule shortly for a listing, but mean-time get the word out.  This one is gonna sell out fast!

Already listed on AR15.COM. If I could ever get my registration squared away for LongIslandFirearms.com, I would've posted it there, too!

On behalf of the Long Island shooting community, thank you to everyone for their efforts in bringing Appleseed back for a second event this year!  O0

Just to avoid confusion, I think you may mean the 17th & 18th of October? If it's the next Calverton AS you're referring to in the above post.  ;)
