Where to mount sling?

I'm 2/3 there. I decided on the underside of my rifle is best. :wb: And I decided in the slot in the stock specifically made for that is best. 2/3 there. And then the "dad, you're a dork" humor runs out and the pesky front mount remains. There are 7 slots in the handguard of my Tippmann. My ignorant (as in not yet educated or with knowledge) thought is the slot nearest the muzzle. But what do you knowledgable educated folks say about position selection? As always, thank you for what I know will be very educational and helpful replies.

Yes.

(In the unlikely event that you should find a comfortable support-hand position that is significantly behind the sling swivel but that hand likes to slide forwards, then and only then move the swivel rearwards as needed.)

For Appleseed style shooting, the slot closest to the muzzle is not necessarily the best unless your arms are significantly longer than average. I would recommend placing it around the 5th or 6th m-lock slot from the magazine well. Then you can adjust from there if needed. Under the barrell is best for Appleseed purposes.

There is nothing stopping you from also installing a QD sling mount near the muzzle on the side of the handguard to accommodate Tactical style 2-point slings.

More totally foreign concept to learn and grasp. ;D And now I think I bought the wrong front mount. Magpul M-Lok GI sling swivel. But nothing about QD. So back to the shopping board for me. Hmmm, just popped into the gigantic void. If this sling is threaded through the slot in the stock could I also use a whatever it is 2-point sling?

NJrefugee

Magpul M-Lok GI sling swivel is fine for attaching a GI sling for Appleseed. You should mount that on the underside of the hand guard as previously described.

In addition, if you wish to satisfy the "dad, you're a dork" crowd and make your rifle more versatile for other types of shooting activities, you can then use the QD type mount as well. This is not necessary or required for Appleseed. It would require a 2 point sling with QD attachments.

LDB415

I'll use what I have then. That simplifies things a bit. And when I get to the clinic they can tell me all the things I got wrong with it. ;D

NJrefugee

I'm sure you'll be fine. Depending on the configuration of your GI sling, you may need to add an attachment point to your stock. The ring from a keychain or a small carabiner can work. Zip-tie is another potential solution.

That's perfect! On Reddit or Discord servers I see a lot of people agonizing about getting ready for class, and I always remind them that it's a class, not a national match. Read https://appleseedinfo.org/pdf/How%20to%20Prepare%20-%2025m%20Rifle.pdf and bring what you can, and as long as you pack your teachable attitude, you can have a good weekend learning shooting skills and history. We don't expect you to know it all before we start teaching it!

The reason I'm going is to have a weekend of LOTS of fun. (Minus that up and down from the ground torture :) stuff.) And all learning and improving is added bonus. And already thinking about the next one. Provided the M.E. clears me after examining me. :)

This.

Of course it depends on the length of the foregrip. I have a short foregrip on some of my rifles so it's near the muzzle.

Front mount too far forward doesn't seem to 'snug' the sling down very well - it pulls more forward. Hard to put into words but I don't like it mounted way forward - doesn't feel right.

When you say you are using the "slot in the stock made for that", what exactly are you talking about? Is it something built into the stock that you are threading the sling through? Or is it an M-Lok slot or something else where you can place a mount that a sling swivel on the sling attaches to?

The important thing is that you need to be able to quickly disconnect the back end of the sling from the stock so you can make your loop sling. So it can't be something where you are threading the sling through the stock. It could be something that you clip the J-hook that comes with the sling through. Or it could be a stud that a swivel on your sling can quickly attach to and detach from. Or it could be a place where you mount a QD cup type mount and, you have a QD sling swivel on your sling.

It's the slot in the base at the back of the buttstock. The sling threads through it. I'd need some different hardware, and I don't know which, to have a disconnect. I need the "for dummies" guide to slings and mounting.

LDB415

I was thinking I need a different stock that has the correct hardware or at least hardware mounting points. A keychain ring and zip tie sound flimsy and/or jury rigged, which is fine for some things but maybe not for this that I'll want to be good for (hopefully) many many years.

mmirate

If this Tippmann is compatible with standard AR-15 collapsible buttstocks, then using one in the original style, with the swivel placed horizontally at the bottom corner, should give you something to clip the J-hook onto.

LDB415

Not sure I'm talented enough for a J-hook, whatever that is. I'm thinking the QD that plugs into the small socket and has a push button release is more my speed.

Zorak

The J-hook is the connector on the stock side of a GI sling when it comes out of the packaging.

LDB415

Yeah, I could see it in the package, the edge of it. I think the push button QD will be more idiot proof which is what I definitely need. I ordered a replacement stock with cheek riser https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1028175561?pid=967487 and QD swivel to plug into it https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1023204171?pid=865799 and a theoretically more comfortable grip. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1151576074?pid=957249

You can add a QD to most Magpul Stocks with the mLok QD mount and some longer screws.

That's good to know and I may use it on the next one. Or even this one if I decide to change stocks again. Thanks for letting me know.

Fulcrum

I'm amazed how much stuff you've bought before your first Appleseed event! A grateful nation thanks you for single-handedly keeping the economy afloat!

That Magpul push-button QD swivel that you bought for the back end of the sling is also the kind you probably want for the front end too. You can add this QD mount to your handguard and use that kind of swivel. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1016170611?pid=349625

LDB415

We all have to do out part. Just working on mine. And it's all fun stuff that's good forever.

Fulcrum

I'm glad you are having fun with it.

LDB415

Thank you. Yes, Appleseed seems the most useful, as re: learning/improving shooting skills and history, as well as just fun preparing and thinking about rimfire shooting.
