Catch-10-22

A great start to the 250th anniversary month celebrations with a 200-yard Rimfire Known Distance yesterday in Sudlersville on Maryland's Eastern Shore. We had a great group of shooters for this spring event and an almost equal number of instructors. The forecast called for temperatures in the 80s with an afternoon thunderstorm...and instead we had temperatures no higher than the 50s, fog and drizzle all day (with heavy rain at lunch time - thank goodness we could use the clubhouse for history).

We started out at the 50-yard line to establish our initial zero and test scope tracking with a few basic drills (vertical squares target) then did two teams for the Parker's Revenge target. While that target is meant for 25 yards, we kept it out at 50 and saw group sizes shrink - aim small, miss small! Team 1 was awarded a clear victory and received Appleseed playing cards and pins for their effort.

We then started the process of zeroing and data collection at 50-200 yards. After establishing our 200-yard zero, we broke for lunch and the story of April 19, 1775, with highlights of our Patriot's Day honoree General William Heath.

We then kicked off our first RKD AQT of the day. To save walking, we started at 200 and worked backwards toward the 50 yard line. We then conducted a second AQT from 50 back to 200.

IIT Hiviloz scored a 46 to earn his RKD rocker and Gabriel V scored a 44 to earn his as well. One other shooter had a 39 - so close! The second RKD saw Gabriel requalify with another 44 (he was going for distinguished but had some saved rounds on a rapid fire stage due to a malfunction) and we had one 37, but no other qualifiers.

We wrapped up the day at the 125 yard line with Morgan's Shingle and had FOUR shooters nail it - huzzah!

Our other shooters came up short but showed real improvement throughout the day. I hope each one returns to try again. A few had equipment issues they vow to fix before the next event. I would recommend each attend an additional 25m Appleseed event - the skills we teach at 25m are critical to effective performance during a KD.

Thanks to CatGravity, Off_paper, fogman, and Hiviloz for making this a safe shoot with lots of great coaching. Many thanks to our host range DSA in Sudlersville - access to a 200 yard range in Maryland is pretty tough and the range is ideal for the event - we are glad to be back and looking forward to another RKD in October.
