You've got to love the weather in the great state of Texas.  Saturday morning started off at a frosty 12 degrees, and Sunday afternoon finished at a balmy 76 degrees.  The mornings were a bit brisk (to say the least) but the sun came out and the afternoons were absolutely beautiful.

9 liberty loving individuals came out for the first event of the year at Goin Firearms and Shooting.  After the welcome speech, and safety briefing, rifles were brought to the line, and the inaugural Hits Count target for 2025 was shot.  Just about half the class had 4 hits in the 400, and the instructor crew had the feeling that this was going to be an above average group of shooters.  After this, we moved things into the heated classroom, where AF5US had brought hot chocolate (thanks for that!) and we heard a rousing First Strike from MRakestraw.  Since everyone had thawed out we moved back out to the range for points of instruction and some exercises.

Lunch came quickly, and the temperatures begin to rise, we again moved back into the classroom to hear the tale of second strike by AF5US.  Returning back to the firing line, the class learned about the different firing positions and transitions.  Before long it was time for the first AQT of the weekend.  Scores were good overall, but there were some challenges with the transition stages. We again adjourned to the classroom for some water and to hear the conclusion of the story of the 19th of April. The day wrapped with some transition stage practices and a hits count.  The good old hits count target reflected some good improvement overall, and a student successfully cleared the target.

Thankfully Sunday morning was a good bit warmer, and the class returned renewed and refreshed.  A good nights rest (and some ibuprofen) showed with the first AQT of the day, as Oscar became the first new rifleman of 2025 at the Muenster range.  We followed up with some more exercises and another AQT.  After targets were scored, we had another new rifleman, Alex!  After a little water break and hearing the tale of Hezekiah Wyman, some more exercises were done and the class was ready for another AQT.  When the targets were scored another new rifleman! Kevin who was using a bolt action rifle had fired a solid rifleman score, and Oscar had fired a Distinguished score!

It was such a nice afternoon the class decided to have lunch outside at the firing line where AF5US and myself taught the KD topics.  We had originally planned to avail ourselves of the 100 m berm to have those interested to fire at 100 m, but since our last event the 25m berm had been improved and it wasn't possible fire at the further berm from prone (to the disappointment of the class).  After lunch the class was ready for another AQT, and another member of the class demonstrated that he was a man who knew very well what he was about, Michael fired a solid rifleman score.  The class did some exercises, and everyone was interested in firing another AQT, some good scores were fired.  For the finale of day 2, the final hits count target was shot, and 2 students cleared the target.

When it was all said and done every one of the students had demonstrated marked improvement over the course of the weekend.  Two of the shooters finished the weekend with scores right around 200 putting them right at the threshold of a rifleman score.  Two of the participants demonstrated particular persistence and I commend them for that.  One these individuals was very new to shooting, and really worked on NPOA and trigger control over the course of the weekend and their groups demonstrated the effort that they had put into this.  The other shooter was only 11 years old, and impressed the instructors with her attentiveness and enthusiasm over the course of a long weekend.

Hats off to everyone this weekend to make this a successful and enjoyable event.  Many thanks to MRakestraw and AF5US for helping this new shoot boss run his first event as a green hat.  Thanks to all of the hard work and diligence this weekend from the participants, especially those who had a long drive to make the event.
