AK47 Reciver cover scope mounts?

I'm looking to maybe scope an AK47.

Does anyone have experience with reciever cover scope mounts on AK-47's?

(These are the do-dads that replace the existing cover with one that typically has a weaver rail on it.)

I'm curious if they work reliably?  (Meaning, do they keep their zero in operation and even if the cover is removed and replaced.)

I've seen some AK's with loose covers -esp chicom's, but mine have tight fits (my Saiga x39 being the tightest.)

The receiver dust-cover scope mounts don't work that well: the covers are not supported well enough.  That's why the AK's use the side-mounted scopes.  Kalinka sells a good 4x version.  However, scoped AK's and Saiga's are very uncomfortable to use prone with these scopes: the scope is way too high.  No chance of a cheek weld.

I've had both on my ak's.

If your ak has the mount for the side rail that is the beat way to mount your scope. It holds it solid and you can remove the mount and replace it with out losing zero.
You can still remove the top cover w/out removing the mount for cleaning if needed.

If you use a top cover mount get one with the two screws in the back when tightened they hold it tight and keep it from wiggling as much. They will sorta' keep zero as in close but not exact "if" you place it back in the same spot and tighten it up just like it was when you took it off but usually mine don't.

In my opinion the top cover mount is good for a red dot or CQB sight but not glass.

thanks - I wanted to hear that from experience.

I'll get a side rail mount, and 0 clearance rings; I have an inexpensive scope I picked up last black Friday that'll do the trick - nothing fancy - but a step up from the Siaga iron sights.

Two kinds of AK side-mount pattern scope mounts- regular height, and low profile- I suggest the low profile, if you are using a scope with less than 50mm obj. lens.

As another has already mentioned, the height on the 'standard height' scopes is ridiculously tall.  Granted, this allows unobstructed view of the iron sights, and ensures than an errant spent casing has zero probability of impacting the scope body, but it also makes it VERY uncomfortable / nearly impossible to acquire/maintain a cheek weld.  (more like chin weld)

The ability to quickly detach the scope, and have it return to zero repeatedly, is one of the best features of this type of scope mount- do yourself the favor and have a proper AK47 side rail installed (if not installed from factory), and forgo the receiver cover mounts altogether.
