Personal Improvement from Becoming an Orange Hat

I want to start with saying I attended my first Appleseed event in 2018 at the Manchester, TN range. That spurred my love for my countries history as well as marksmanship.
Fast forward to this past spring I brought a couple of my friends to the Chattanooga shoot because they were starting to get into shooting. There I picked up my orange hat and started the journey of teaching what I have learned.
The last few months have been busy and I haven't been able to work a shoot (something I'm hoping to fix soon). But last weekend for drill with my unit was my first range day in over a year because of a deployment. I typically shoot around 30/40 but because of what I have learned and drilled into my muscle memory, I shot a 38/40, my personal best. Clearly the marksmanship we teach is doing something right, even if we don't always see the improvement right away. My first thought after hearing my score was, "Wow, Appleseed fundamentals work!"
Sincerely,
SignalShooter42

Kick butt, SignalShooter!  Awesome to hear. I think you're close enough to visit some GA shoots too. Bring your friends.

"Perhaps you and I have lived with this miracle too long to be properly appreciative. Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Nicely done.

A fellow Red Hat emailed me this target while he was working the pits at Camp Perry.  300 yard target/stage. Yeah, I'd say NPOA works.  LoL

SignalShooter your experience mirrors mine. Since 2019 when I went to my first Appleseed I have made real improvement by applying that which we teach. In 2019, it felt awkward in sitting and prone. Now? It feels natural and right.

Now I'm getting into Service Rifle. All that we teach at a KD applies directly to the Service Rifle course of fire: Standing at 200, Seated rapid fire at 200, Prone rapid fire at 300 and Slow prone at 600. For what it's worth in slow prone at 600: EVERYTHING matters to the nth degree!!! NPOA, solid position, the six steps, your ammo, your gear, your come ups and doping the wind are all priority number one. Neglect any one of those criteria and you'll send a shot into the 8 or 7 ring. Didn't see the wind pick up a bit, there's a six. It's a big challenge and it's fascinating.

For what it's worth, the other day at a KD in Talkeetna, Alaska I got my gold star by hitting the shingle standing. We also did a Redcoat/hits count COF on steel targets and I cleared it from seated. It's an example of improvement from the first clinic in 2019.

Gus
