If I would donate an 8TB hard drive, could it be installed somewhere and used for picture storage/hosting so that we could just upload pics instead of using a 3rd party service and going throng that rigamaroll?

I wouldn't hate that. I deleted the imgur app a while back fpr reasons, and the website is NOT mobile friendly without the app.

Do note that storage is but one half of the expense of serving images to the public; in many places, depending on the service provider, egressing large amounts of data per month may also be costly, and/or egress speed may be vastly reduced compared to ingress speed. And of course, donated physical storage media can only be attached to physical computers - for all I know, the forum etc might be hosted on a "cloud" server (aka a rented share of someone else's computer).
