Every year Red Brush Rifle Range near Evansville Indiana grants Appleseed access to their 500-yard bay for a day.  It is always an enjoyable time for shooters to take the skills developed at 25 meters and apply them to the rifleman's quarter mile, even when the weather decides to take an unexpected nosedive!

The first target of the day was Morgan's Shingle at 250 yards.  The instructor corps couldn't resist joining the relays with the shooters for a total of eleven taking a crack at joining Morgan's cadre.  Huzzahs were given to Allisa, Bryan, and Sur+Rifle for hitting the mark and earning their patch, certificate, and place on the roster!

The marksmanship instruction focused on overcoming the three challenges to distance shooting, with an emphasis on the third challenge of making the shot. Through the zeroing exercises, each shooter determined their come ups out to 500 yards.  It was quite gratifying to see many hits on the black at 500 yards when the shooters simply clicked in the rule of thumb adjustment from their 400 yard zeros.  Well done!  Unfortunately, the wind was a constant two miles per hour from a zero value direction, so we did not get to put the wind adjustment learning to use.  But they have it in their tool kit for future use.

When it came to the full distance AQTs we had shooters reaching into the thirties.  A series of mechanical issues caused problems impacting scores…scope coming loose, trigger not resetting, extraction malfunctions.  As they say, nothing like an Appleseed KD for sorting out equipment.  Of course, riflemen persist and we had an exemplar of that at this shoot…

Congratulations to Jay for earning his Known Distance patch!

On the history front we had excellent discussions regarding various contributions of riflemen during the American Revolution.  One interesting note brought up was that the "Headless Horseman" commonly depicted around Halloween is based on the folk tale of the "Headless Hessian of the Hollow," one of the mercenaries reportedly struck down by Washington's men during the battle of White Plains, New York.  Imagine that the acts of the Hessians lost the hearts of the colonists to such an extent that their primary memory became that of malevolent spirits.

Allisa, Bryan, Jay, Jeffrey, Jerry, and Tyler, thank you for making this such a great shoot!  We hope to see you on the firing line in the future.  And a big thank you to the instructor corps of Big John, Darkfoot, JaysHoneyBunny, and WilderMars who made it all happen.

Big John

A little late on the report, but, last week was a good shoot. Even a day with inclement weather on the range beats a day in the office. We had several dedicated shooters, and we made full use of the Redbrush Rifle Range's 500 yard line. Very professional conduct on part of all attending, and, although the KD is hard to do in a day, we got it done.

Some additional photos to the above experience:

1. Sur+Rifle extols the virtues of becoming a Rifleman.
2. Sur+Rifle introduces The Shingle.
3. Early on instruction while it rains with the Shoot Boss.
4. Lunch history with the Shoot Boss, and the students and instructors. There is an orange hat under that quilt.
5. Rainy and windy and raw were the order of the day. Shooters were given a ride to the far end, but 100 to 200 means you walk.
6. Stage 3 of the AQT.
7. 400 yards is a ways off. We even went to 500.
