Hello and welcome to Appleseed.

In regards to the .30 Cal rule, there is a post in the FAQ.

What is the ".30 cal rule?"
The AQT targets are 'shrunk' to make scoring easy. They are exactly .30 undersize. In other words, an actual target at the actual distance would be - at the reduced distance - .30 inches bigger, all around. All that is done so if a .30 cal bullet hole touches the line, it is considered a hit. Therefore, since the targets are artificially smaller to make scoring .30 easier, there's no reason to add a penalty if you shoot a smaller caliber. Hence, the ".30 cal rule".

There is a reason for it - a mechanical one, tied in to the artificially-smaller targets - made so for ease in scoring .30 cal.

So, because of that, with a suggestion from another Instructor, I ended up spending some time in the machine shop and turned down some metal to make these scoring gauges. It was common for some instructors to use a 308 cartridge to gauge the hit. This leads to issues cause it can tear the paper, and its not very accurate.

The gauges I made have a section that is ~.223" in diameter with a shoulder that steps up to ~.308" in diameter. This makes scoring very very simple. Let you know right away if it falls under the .30 caliber rule or not.
