I guess it wouldn't be a Pistol Clinic at the Piqua Fish and Game if we didn't have mud, cold temperatures, high winds and a little snow; we were blessed with all those elements. However we were also blessed with a great group of shooters and instructors. It seems strange to be having so much fun while being physically cold and miserable battling the elements!

We had nine shooters join us Saturday morning as the Pledge of Allegiance started the day. Safety briefings, pistol parts and functions, stance and grip instruction was given before retrieving pistols for the opening Red Coat target. Dave and Bryan showed they came with skills by clearing the target.

We moved through the layers of instruction and several drills, had lunch and heard some history before shooting our first Pistol Qualification Test  (PQT). Two shooters hit the mark of a Pistoleerâ„¢'s score; Dave R. earned his patch with a score of 233 and re-qualified with a 232, and Bryan H. (already a Pistoleerâ„¢) re-qualified with a 224.

Sunday morning found everyone driving to the range in 26-degree temperatures on snow-covered roads with high winds, and more snow coming down; it didn't look promising! However wind direction had shifted allowing the trees to block the wind, and the snow tapered off, making the day seem pleasant compared to Saturday. The sun even peaked out a few times, raising everyone's spirits.  Extensive slow fire drills, (ball and dummy drill always brings issued to light) tightened everyone's groups.

As we began the day's PQT's it was clear we had made some progress. Steel-Man earned his patch with a 211 and re-confirmed with a 213 and 214, while Darold N. shot a 213 and re-confirmed with another 213 and a 215.

Dave R. shooting his 9MM, re-confirmed with a 210, and Bryan H. shot a distinguished score of 234 Sunday with iron sights. But probably the most improvement was shown by our lady shooters, Sally and Tina; both were making hits that put them in the 190's, and getting very close to earning their patch, good shooting ladies!

For our fun shoot Sunday afternoon we placed targets at about 50 yards. After shooting ten rounds to gage if and adjustments were needed, shooters were given ten seconds to place ten rounds on the paper (about 18"wide X 24" high) and highest number of hits won; while everyone landed plenty of hits on the paper, it was Steel-Man who had all ten of his rounds find their mark; congratulations.

Thanks go to our great instructor crew, Doc Willi, Charley, Chieflane, Little Buddy, Shadow870 and WildBillCody.

March really dealt Ohio Pistol Events with challenging weather.  Fortunate for the lack of wind for Sunday, Wolf Creek was not so lucky since Lake Erie is wide open.
Great team of shooters that overcame the elements.  Congratulations to all.  Those scores were great.

Steel-Man

Thanks to all for a great weekend and great instruction!  The weather just made the event more memorable.

Thanks

Mike

Doc Willi

This was a great group that persisted through the weather and mud.

I haven't been able to attend a pistol shoot yet, what is the course of fire?

JustaShooter,
The Pistol Qualification Test (PQT) is 5 stages with a total of 40 rounds at 7 yards
Stage 1: Load 6 and 4 rounds. 10 rounds rapid fire including a magazine change. Holes in paper: 10. Time: 15 seconds.
Stage 2: Load 6 and 4 rounds. 10 rounds rapid fire. Controlled pairs, alternating between 2 targets with a mag change. Time: 15 seconds.
Stage 3: Load 5 rounds. Five rounds slow fire.  Time: 15 seconds. (Left hand only.)
Stage 4: Load 5 rounds. Five rounds slow fire.  Time: 15 seconds. (Right hand only.)
Stage 5: Load 10 rounds. 10 rounds slow fire. 4 targets- round count 2, 2, 3, 3. Time: two minutes. Scores on Stage 5 are double.

If you are asking about the course of fire for the entire weekend, that is too much to write here.
In a weekend, we will typically shoot around 700 or more rounds, and similar to the rifle events, we start with safety and then stance and how to fire a shot.
Hope this helps.

Thank you very much!

That's exactly what I was looking for, the qualification course of fire.  I understand the entire weekend's instruction would be far too much to encapsulate in a post..
