AAR Erie County Conservation League May 1&2, 2021

To all the attendees,

What a great Appleseed we had this past weekend at Erie County Conservation League, Sandusky, Ohio.  We had 9 motivated shooters show up ready to work on their Marksmanship skills. The weather report was good.  Sunny and mild temps.  But, we didn't anticipate the wind. Both Saturday and Sunday there was a steady and strong wind coming from the west.  Luckily, this was from our 6 o'clock and it didn't cause us too many problems shooting.  As to blowing around targets, backers, white boards, hand outs and anything else that was not tied down, well that was another story. 
     
The shooters all arrived on time and we proceeded with the welcome and the safety briefing.  Rifles were brought to the line and we moved on to shooting the morning Red Coat.

The results were typical.  Of the 9 shooters we had:
7 who put all three rounds in the 100yd target, 3 at 200, 2 at 300 but none at 400.  Nobody hit the shingle and we had 0 who cleared the Red Coat.

After the Red Coat, we moved onto instructions on the Steady Hold Factors in prone, the Six Steps and NPOA.  These were followed by related shooting drills to allow the shooters to apply the instructions.

Sighter groups were shot just before lunch. We then broke for lunch and told the First Strike.  After lunch, we returned to the line, presented IMC, made sight adjustments, shot confirmation groups and had a second session of adjustments and confirmation group shoots.

We were then able to move on to instructions on the steady hold factors in seated and standing followed by related drills. The Second Strike was told at the afternoon break and we then returned to the line for the Saturday PM Red Coat.  Scores were not much different from the morning.  We had 6 of 9 at 100, 2 at 200, 2 at 300, 0 at 400 and 1 joined Daniel Morgan.

The day ended with the Third Strike and a Call to Action for the shooters.

Sunday dawned sunny and still windy. The range has a limitation on shooting on Sunday before 10AM so we opened the day with attendance, a review of the safety rules and the POI's. This was followed by the dry fire trigger drill to work on finger placement, follow through, sear reset recognition and trigger engagement. By then it was 10 AM and we were able to shoot the morning Red Coat.

Evidently, the trigger drill was effective as the results of the Red Coat were impressive and a dramatic upgrade from Sat.  We had 8 of 9 put all three rounds in the 100yd target, 8 at 200, 3 at 300, 2 at 400, 5 joined Daniel Morgan, and 1 cleared their Red Coat. Congrats to Adam who was presented with an Ohio Appleseed patch for clearing his Red Coat. 

We then returned to the line for an NPOA shooting drill followed by the first AQT of the weekend. We shot two AQT's before lunch and presented the KD lecture at lunch.  We returned to the line for more AQT's and we finally started to make some Riflemen. During the afternoon AQT's we made two new Riflemen.

Both have the honor of shooting the score at their first Appleseed, quite an accomplishment. 

Before we shot the final AQT, we set up a team challenge.  With nine shooters, we set up three teams of three shooters. The teams were named team Adams, team Davis and team Revere.  We posted a 100yd target on the line and gave each shooter five rounds. The teams had 2 minutes to get their shots on the target with the highest score winning, ties to be broken by most v's.  The results were impressive.  Our winning team was team Adams.  They scored a perfect 75 (all 15 shots were in the five ring) and they had 11 v's.  This is more impressive as two of the three shooters were using borrowed rifles as their rifles had failed for one reason or another earlier in the weekend.  Congrats to team Adams.  Great work.   

Finally, it was time to shoot the Sunday PM Red Coat. Results showed that the weekend was a success. We had 9 of 9 at 100 (100%), 8 at 200, 5 at 300, 2 at 400, 2 joined Daniel Morgan, and 1 more cleared Red Coats.

Congrats to Marie on her cleared Red Coat.  This was her second Appleseed and she came so close all weekend to qualifying.  AQT's in the 190s+, pushing 200 with great stage 4's.  She was just jinxed in the other stages with ammo, mag or other problems.  I am sure that she will become a Riflewoman the next time she joins us. 

The weekend came to a close with some final comments by me and a thank you to all the shooters for a great weekend.

Thanks go out to Erie County Conservation League for allowing us access to such a fine facility to spread the word of freedom and Heritage. Also to all the other instructors - great working with all of you and can't wait to do it again.

What a great Father/Son pic.  Dad is a member of law enforcement and his son is a fine young fellow.  We were blessed to have them both join us.  I hope to see both of them again in Sept when we return to ECCL.
