See here NRA Article.  My impression is that it would make a good bolt-action for the KD rapid fire. It claims to facilitate maintaining cheek-weld. It features a reversible bolt for southpaws, a 20 MOA rail, and 10 round magazine with the Predator version in .308, 6.5 Creedmore, and 22-250.

Oh man that does look cool. I hope they come out with a rimfire version.

it seems to borrow from the Blazer R8 . the R8 uses a 2 part ring that extend out into the reviver recess. the bolt handle rotates some to lock and unlock the bolt by expanding the ring to lock and reducing the ring to unlock.

the Savage looks to use a ring of balls the rotation of the bolt handle allow the balls into the bolt flush or pushes them out into the recess in the receiver as locking lugs

I assume the striker is blocked from release until the bolt handle is rotated back into the fully locked position

the Swiss K31 as you pull the handle it uses a cam to rotate the bolt locking lugs , the main issue with any of the rotating bolt particularity bolt lugs was if the ammo or chamber got dirty you had significantly less leverage to force the round in.

the R8 and now the savage push the locking lugs strait out into the recess rather than rotating traditional bolt lugs.

it will be an interesting thing to see how it does , if it has lock up issues if it gets dirty.

it may make a difference , a rifleman's score can be shot with a traditional rotating bolt where you must lift the bolt handle first.
I don't know that it will change how much you move your hand, arm and body over a traditional bolt by much if any and returning to NPOA reliably after cycling the bolt , keeping the elbow planted made the difference for me.

I would love to get one of the Predator models in 6.5. It's nice to see Savage still cares about left-handed shooters.

TrapperPete.  I agree with you on the ability to make the Rifleman score with a bolt rifle. My best at 25m was with a CZ 455 with a score of 235. Having said that, the 455 and 452 have a 90 degree turn on the bolt, which was a challenge for me to master rapid-fire stages (Springfield roll in prone, using trigger knee in open-leg sitting to assist bolt release, middle trigger finger, avoiding the scope bell, maintaining cheek weld). The newer CZ 457 has a 60 degree bolt rotation.  A zero bolt turn ought to make operation simpler and might enable one to score Distinguished a bit easier.

See a review of 6.5 Savage here. He says is shooting 1 MOA at 700. Others hitting out to 1500.  I think he could maintain cheek weld if he would put the scope forward a bit.

I would like to see a good rifleman in the Mad Minute with this Savage.

it makes me wonder how fast you could get using the middle finger trigger method?

now you have me wondering about my bolt time on my Mossbergs  MVP and Patriot predator I may have to go burn some precious ammo on some 100 or 200 yards steel on the shot timer

See here a video that demonstrates the middle trigger finger.  I would suggest practicing the middle finger without actually pulling the trigger in a "dry fire" mode until I got the mechanics very fast. I also practice dry fire with a centerfire where there is no chance of damage to the firing pin or breach. Call your shots.  Use the 55 and 65 sec stage 2 and 3 times. Once you have it down pat, then switch to real ammo.  The first video is using the index finger and the SMLE Lee Enfield with stripper clips, which was used by the Brits and holds the world record.  There is a second video of Gary Elesio using a modern bolt action with magazines doing a mad-minute at the 4:46 mark. He got 24 shots on target at 300 yards in one minute starting in prone.  We are trying for 10 rounds from standing to prone, about 55? Note his middle finger and he keeps the hand and index finger on the bolt handle all the time except when changing mags. Once you get good, try the mad minute and compare it with the record. PS. Maybe we ought to have a "Mad Minute" Bar with the  Appleseed Rifleman Patch for Bolt Guns - both 25m and KDs

DeckApe has shot score with his MVP.  He just runs the bolt and uses his trigger finger.

Last evening, it occurred to me that when a defender of Liberty is called home, their load lands upon the shoulders of the defenders left behind. Just as the Founders did their duty for Liberty, every subsequent generation must continue their work lest Liberty perish. As there is no way for the remaining adults to take on the work of those that die, we must pass the ideals and duties on to the children. -PHenery

my first rifleman patch at my first Appleseed was earned with a Savage MKII 22lr with optic

I have done the middle finger trigger a few times.

things left on my to do list are
bolt action 22lr iron sights
MVP 308 Kd optics
M1 garand irons KD
Kd with my deer rifle in 308

Congratulations to DeckApe.  I  hope to shoot at RBC Ramseur this spring with a 7.62 Mossberg MPV Scout and GI NATO from LakeCity. I have a much bigger scope than needed or desired, 8x36 BSA AO, but I may spring for something lighter like the 2-7 x 40 Vortex scout mounted forward with its 9.5 eye relief.

This thread has me interested in this new rifle, I have been looking on the 'net haven't found one for sale anywhere.

I like my CZ 452's for rimfire, have also had success with a Howa Mini Bolt in .223. Have just started using a Weatherby Vanguard in .223, very smooth!

I use semi-auto's and bolt rifles.

Got to say this thread has me rethinking this item: https://www.cdnnsports.com/firearms/hunting-rifles/steyr-scout-rfr-22lr-threaded.html

I can offer no experience with it but do feel desire....

If this thread does not make one rethink it, future legislation might. I don't think it is by coincidence that this bolt technology is being revisited. With that said, it would potentially make a fine centerfire platform for target sports in the event other platforms are no longer available.

Picked up the Steyr straight pull .22 yesterday.  Work isn't going to let me take it to the range for a while but I worked the action with dummy rounds.  Initial impressions are...

Some of the video reviews show an intermittent failure to feed issue, and I was able to duplicate that.  The problem I see--at least with these  dummy rounds--is that the magazine can rock a little fore-and-aft while it is inserted.  When the bolt goes forward, it pushes down on the feed lips and causes the front of the magazine to tilt down slightly, and the changed angle of the magazine (and therefore the top round) sometimes causes a failure to feed on subsequent shots.

If I keep pressure on the back of the magazine while cycling the action, the magazine and the nose of the top round in the magazine stays tipped up and the whole magazine feeds cleanly.  If that proves to be an issue in live fire, I am sure I could work up a shim that would address the problem (not that I should have to...but if I like the rifle apart from that and no other remedy is forthcoming...)

The action is very fast, it stays in your shoulder, no bolt coming back toward your nose, and the ejection is practically flank protection, the cases fly out like from a G-43.  (I know, I'm old.  And obscure.)

I will get it to the range and try it out for real.  The dummy rounds have a bit narrower nose than Blazers, and I'm not sure whether that shape will make it better, worse, or no different.  That will have to wait for the range.
