Marion Road Gun Club in Macon, GA hosted a two-day Appleseed clinic on 6-7 April 2019. Ten eager shooters came out to hear some American history and learn traditional rifle marksmanship on a drizzly day.

After introduction and a safety brief, students shot their first redcoat to gage skill level. Instructors discovered that we had some able shooters on the firing line. We rolled right into instruction, teaching steady hold factors, six steps of the shot and natural point of aim, each lesson put into immediate practice with a drill following.

Throughout the day, shooters heard the true story of April 19th, 1775 through the telling of the Three Strikes of The Match. The history of Paul Revere's ride, Lexington and Concord was told to share the fact that we are all inheritors and stewards of liberty and freedom that was paid for in blood.

Lessons were given on talking targets, Inches, Minutes and Clicks and firing in rifleman's cadence. Targets paid the price as shooters learned and applied the fundamentals of shooting in seated and standing positions.

The Appleseed Qualification Test (AQT) was shot Saturday afternoon. A few shooters showed their skills with solid scores. We ended the day with another redcoat target, where improvement from the morning's first target was shown.

It was great to have a couple of youth on the line. Adam was able to put many of his shots in the black squares with regularity. Maddy, who was shooting for the first time, took to the rifle like a duck to water. On Sunday, she amazed the instructors by hitting a 2" target at 100 yards as if she had been doing it for many years. Thanks, dads, for bringing them out.

All ten shooters returned Sunday. Although the morning started out cloudy and drizzling, it promptly cleared up into a beautiful spring day. After a brief sighter period, we rolled right into the first AQT of the day. A review of Saturday's instruction was given and specific drills were ran to work on natural point of aim and magazine changes.  The ol' ball and dummy drill was then ran between shooter pairs to identify any shooter problems.

Lunch was followed with tales of Dangerous Old Men and Brave Women before we headed back to the firing line. Two more AQTs were shot Sunday afternoon. We saw a couple scores in the 180s and 190s from some very good shooters. MRGC president Kyle requalified with a 224, shooting a beautiful 1938 Springfield M2 bolt action trainer. Nicely done, Kyle!

Full distance shooting was taught, where students learned how to detect targets, estimate range, apply come-ups and deal with wind at extended range. The lesson was put into practice as we backed up from 25 meters to 100 yards. After an initial string of fire, students applied Inches Minutes and Clicks to get their hits on target. With zeroes confirmed, we engaged in a little friendly competition on steel targets. Kyle, Tim, Don and Barry all took home some Appleseed swag as prizes.

Thanks to Marion Road Gun Club for being such a faithful and hospitable host. Thank you all, shooters, for your teachable attitudes and enthusiasm.  It was an honor and privilege to work with you. We hope to see you again.

As Brian said, it was great to have two young participants on the line.  I saw a lot of improvement up and down the firing line and a lot of heart sticking through the rain and mud.

Doug is turning out to be a great asset to the program on his first shoot as a full instructor.

A rifleman persists.

A rifleman persists; it took me six Appleseeds, a number of equipment changes and a trip to the eye doctor to qualify.  Pumpkinseed is my only daughter.

Awesome! Sounds like a great event and good shooting Kyle!

Keep coming back and keep bringing the kiddos. A Rifleman persists!
