What a great 2 day KD event thanks to our friends at South Kent Sportsmans Club and their 500 meter range.  We had a sold out shoot but unfortunately one of our shooters had a last minute trip to China.

Still, 9 shooters -- all former Appleseeders -- welcomed the chance to stretch their rifle's legs.  On Saturday we did the following:

  • 25 meter Redcoat
  • Position and 6 steps review
  • 25 meter zero datum with "clicks from bottom" to our mechanical zeros
  • KD fundamentals, come ups and data cards
  • 100 yard zeros
  • Stage 1 AQT
  • NPOA review, laser rifle drill with students on the lasers, wind estimation
  • 200, 300, 400 zeros
  • History -- including the Winter Campaign of 1776
  • Morgan's Shingle -- 1 shot at a 3x4 MOA steel rectangle at 300

We intended to bang out 2 AQTs but we found it so important to make sure our zeros were ROCK SOLID, that we spent all day on Saturday on this...given that this is the foundation of our mid-range shooting, everyone agreed this was important.

On Sunday we did the following:

  • Morgan's Shingle
  • Zeros verification at 100, 200, 300, 400 -- hey they changed! (75 deg on Saturday afternoon, 45 deg on Sunday morning.  Scope tightening and different ammo had an effect also)
  • 3 KD "Hits Count" AQTs -- Bob scored KD Rifleman with a 35 then requalified with a 37!  We also had a 30 (Al), several 25s (Jacob, Kevin, Kyle)
  • Advanced KD topics -- angles, temp, altitude
  • Fundamentals of ranging:  R=I/M
  • Ranging exercise -- measure our front sights and then range objects set out on the range...with FABULOUS PRIZES
  • Fun shoot -- 1/2 size D-Target steel set at 400 -- simulating an 800 meter shot -- we got 4 out of 10 shooters with hits!
  • Morgan's Shingle

Thanks everyone who came out, and especially for all your help tearing down the range.  Special thanks to the range and the club ROs that helped out.

It was a great learning experience! Thank you to all the Appleseed staff for making this a fun and safe event. We will have to arrange a return engagement for next year.
