I got the parts kit for the sks front sight post, sight tool, and sight adjustment tool. I took out the original front sight post, but the new one doesn't want to thread into the base. It seems that the new one may be a larger diameter than the old one.

Has anyone else had this problem? Also does anyone know the tap size thread size of the original? Maybe if I can chase the threads out,the new one will go in..

Hold the two sight posts, old and new, together; do the thread patterns match?
Do both have the same diameter?
If these match, all is well, the thread is M6 x 0.75

The new sight is flared to spring against the drum, just like the original.
Use the elevation tool to start the sight into the drum.  It won't be a loose fit, like a machine bolt into a nut; the post will instead spring against the female threads.  Just start it true to the female threads, push down on the elevation tool, and rotate the elevation tool clockwise at the same time.

Exert sufficient force downward on the post while you rotate it, so the chamfered bottom of the post will find its way into the drum threads.

The original measures 32 on my dial caliper, the new one measures 40. I think the difference is a little too much. I might get it to work though.

Ok,a couple taps with a brass hammer and punch, and it squeezed it together, just a little too small, ??? then I adjusted it with a jeweler's screwdriver until it was exact. It went right in,and now I have a really nice front sight on the yugo.. :D No worries.... O0

Let me know how it shoots.  Interested to hear a field report!

AFTERMATH

For future inquiries:

To avoid any damage to the threads, you could try what I did.
I pressed the drum out(with the windage tool)
Then I proceded to thread it up through the bottom. -this compressed the flare enough to make for a perfect fit.
-It also fixed the threads(on the sight) I somebody messed up by cross-threading it while trying too much force.
I then removed it, replaced the drum, and reinserted it properly.

I used a standard windage and elevation tool, for all of this.

It's simple.

To help prevent cross thread after drifting the drum out, make sure you get it back in exactly straight, (Hole exactly vertical). (I, I mean, somebody didn't do this once and it was tough to get the sight back in at all, let alone straight)
Insert the sight into the drum from the bottom. Then placed the drum in the hole and start it in, making sure the sight is exactly straight down. (You have to make it down, not up, otherwise the sight will strike the sight protector) Once I had it started straight, I just removed the sight and continued to drift the drum into place, then inserted the sight from the top as usual.
One good thing about doing it this way is that you get that drum, (Which has been glued into place by cosmoline for 40 years), to break free, get a good claening, and when re-inserted will drift SO much easier for sight adjustments!
