Under 1000 rounds before catastrophic failure. With all modern day technology.

But there joke any ways in my opinion. I would never take there word as gospel.
Don't panic just aim.

I'm not surprised the barrel went first.  That was a stainless barrel in A2 profile, which is a pretty light profile.  Notice it split at the skinniest part of the barrel, right before the gas block.  Stainless does not handle heat as well as chrome moly.  I'm sure a mil spec 4150 CMV chrome lined barrel with the same profile would have held up better.

There is a reason nobody puts SS barrels on machine guns.
"Of liberty I would say that, in the whole plenitude of its extent, it is unobstructed action according to our will. But rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law,' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the right of an individual."
-- Thomas Jefferson to Isaac H. Tiffany, 1819

There's a reason the military has crew served weapons and IV talks about it in the video - to change out the barrels when they get too hot.

The AR isn't made to be shot like that. Even most machine guns aren't made to be shot like that. Sure, you can pop off a couple hundred rounds at cyclic rate (or as near as possible with a magazine fed rifle) but eventually, something is going to fail. Simple metallurgy and mechanical tolerances come into play at various points of elevation in temperature. Shooting the gun really fast makes the temperature go up.

It's good to know stuff like this since many of our buddies out there on the forums or on the firing lines will say things like, "I'm just gonna dump all 750 rounds out of this here SKS with these drum mags I made in my shed." That way we can step away to a safe distance and get the camera ready.

It's also good for the youngins who like to go, "pew pew pew pew pew pew 'murica pew pew pew pew" without hitting much. You can tell them about this video you watched where the rifle got so hot it stopped working.

I like to just dump water down the barrel of my AK to cool it off. Ahhh!

Great fun to watch with the boys.    **) **) **)

I watched it without sound, and couldn't stop watching his muzzle break spinning.

During the whole affair, the rebels attacked us in a very scattered, irregular manner, but with perseverance and resolution, nor did they ever dare to form into a regular body. Indeed they knew too well what was proper, to do so. Whoever looks upon them as an irregular mob, will find himself very much mistaken. They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about..."Gen. Hugh, Earl Percy

I agree, watching the muzzle break spin is cool. You see it fly off at 7:51.  ;)
A moral compass provides a basis for making decisions; an action is good or bad, right or wrong when viewed in the light of the individual's moral bearing. If no moral compass exists for the individual, then decisions and actions are made on the basis of purely subjective thoughts. This leads to "If it makes me happy, or makes me feel good, or if it's something I simply want to do, then it is right and good."

I would probably plan on carrying Seven - 30 round magazines, which is 210 rounds when I didn't have a re-supply plan.  This is well below the 830 in the videos, which was shoot on full auto.  Realistically, how many rounds do you expect to carry on you?

Here is is another torture test of throwing the AR in sand, mud, water, etc.   In my mind, the video helps to resolves the argument about AR reliability; it's reliable enough in my opinion.

Can I ask why you need 210 rounds?

I think your talking about SHTF

I heard the US Military standard load for a soldier is 210 rounds (seven 30 round magazines).  I'm guessing someone estimated that was how much was optimal amount when factoring carrying an IFAK, food, water, etc.

Yes, I am thinking of a SHTF scenario.

Ah ok. At the end of the day if you need 210 rounds
1. You need more appleseed  ;D
2. You need more powerful cartridge.
3. You need to run.

That me.

Are you ever going dump 1000+ rounds at time probably not should you gun be able probably so.

But this guy are same ones said you can't dry fire 10/22 and mini. But ruger say and warranty the. And they said you can't dry fire garand m14 buhahah right guess they need go back to ww2 and tell the army that.
Don't panic just aim.

I wish I didn't bring so much ammo...

So out side of military or Hollywood movies. Or just having fun melting an AR
Don't panic just aim.

Wow! . . .  I watched this and did not see it as a reliability test for the AR.  Rather, I saw someone with too much time and money on their hands saying to themselves "I wonder how long it will take me to destroy this rifle."  This is in the same mentality as putting the throttle to the floor while in Park and holding it there until something breaks.  I will admit that I was surprised that the barrel went first, I was expecting the gas rings or firing pin to go first.  Standard ammo load when I was active duty was 200 rds and 6 30rd magazines.

So the standard ammo load was:  200 + 180 (6 30 rd mags) = 380?

6 30rd Magazines, 200 rounds issued = 180 rds in magazines and 20rds in pockets or Alice pack, (Sorry if I wasn't clear).
