Davilla Boot Camp 1108

I'm probably the first one home from Davilla 11-08 boot camp, since I'm missing the last day of instruction.

This was a fantastic experience for me.  A lot of the things that I had heard at previous Appleseeds really jelled for me, and I was able to shoot Rifleman at both 25m and full distance ranges.  There is no way I could have done this without the patient attention of all of the instructors.  I'd like to personally thank Scout for hosting us, Junior Birdman for running a great bootcamp, Didactic for keeping me focused, and Steve and Voortrekker for not letting me slack off.

I was privileged to shoot this boot camp with a number of other fine individuals.  Many of them don't have forum names that I know of, so I'll have to call them out by name.

Top - you made me shoot better by simply being on the line next to me.  Having another serious shooter next to me who was also chasing a Rifleman patch helped me to stay focused.
Gooch - You were the definition of perseverance in this shoot.  You fought hard with the positions, your eyes, your rifles, and the results of your efforts were very evident by the end of the week.
Dylan - I know you have a forum handle, but I don't remember it.  Thanks for pushing me to iron sights after my first Rifleman score.  I know you are local to Austin, and I expect we're going to be working together a lot in the future at Appleseeds.  Your dad was also a lot of fun.
Dylan's dad - I will never forget your rendition of first strike.  You did great things with an SKS on the KD range.  I know that there is a Rifleman patch in your near future.
Kyle - You drove from freakin' Colorado to be at this shoot?  That's dedication.  It was a pleasure shooting with you, and I know that you will make a big impact on the Appleseed program in Colorado.
Lex T Concord - (How about that - I know the forum name, but not the real name!)  It was a privilege shooting with you.  On Sunday before Appleseed, you spoke some words for those of us who were missing Sunday services.  I thought about what you said through the week, and I'd like you to know that you spoke a sermon that made me really think.
Derick - We're going to be working together soon to bring Appleseed to the Austin Rifle Club.  I was very happy to see you earn a Rifleman patch.  You are going to be an asset to the Appleseed program, and I look forward to working with you.
Charles - You did a great job this week.  I look forward to spending more time with you when the Houston show doesn't conflict with the Austin show.  I really appreciate your moving our Saxet show table to adjoin yours.
Maura and Roy - I know that you have 4 children and that you left them in the care of others to attend this week's training.  That speaks volumes for your commitment to becoming Rifleman.  Maura, thanks for acting as "Davilla 1108 Mom" for the weekend.  I know that you treated a lot of "boo-boos" in addition to a more serious incident with Didactic.
Dennis - We didn't spend much time together, but when you sights were on, you did a great job chasing rifleman.  I hope you get your patch this weekend.
Kevin (Baltic Dry Goods) - This isn't your forum handle, but it should be.  Shorten it to "BDG" if you have to.  It was a pleasure shooting with you.  You are a stronger man than me for eating that many MRE's in a row.  You are also chasing a rifleman patch, and I know you'll grab it soon.

It was my privilege to once shout "Davilla" and get the loud response of "11-08".  Great job, guys.  I wish I could have finished out the week with you.  I'll see you this weekend for the Appleseed!

Best wishes to Didactic, who left early due to some health issues.

All right!!!! This is what AS is about.  Great Job for everyone who was there.  By the way, you guys got the Birdman!!!!  Wow.  Not all, no not any SB, will be like him.  You were there in Danviilla with Birdman.  You will never forget the weekend!  I have to go to Texas next year to see the results. ;D ;D ;D

Might as well take away the mystery.  Yup. l left early Tuesday, asked Scout to drive me to Temple to the hospital.  Heath issue, yeah.  You might say that.

Turned out I was having a minor heart attack.  Well, technology is grand, I was in a catheterization lab almost immediately.  They put in two gizzies into a coronary artery, and stopped the heart attack in progress.  Summary, I'm home already, feeling fine, will probably be back on the line at the AS Sunday and back to work next week.  I'm in much better condition than I have any right to be, damage to my heart was minimal.

Fred called me Wednesday afternoon to remind me that Appleseed is a lifetime commitment, and that dying without pre-authorization is not an acceptable way to end that commitment.

Didactic,

Just found out about your heart attack (behind on my reading). I'm glad to hear your feeling better.
Fred's right dying on the job can lead to disciplinary action.

On a different note, if you get back to Davilla on Sunday, be careful. Also oldgrunt is supposed to be there. If he tries to give you a hug don't let him squeeze to hard. Would really like to see him leave Davilla with an orange hat.

Give everyone my best and you take care.

Didactic,

Wow, glad I came back to read After-action reports!

"Turned out I was having a minor heart attack."

Hey!  That sucked the wind out of me!!  Glad to hear your care was pronto.  Fellow I used to work with kept drinking bottles of Mylanta, wouldn't listen to his wife or co-workers. . .finally he had no other choice when she put her foot down really hard.  He was having a heart attack in-progress, Dr rushed him right off to the Hospital!  I think it was the first time I ever said a doctor did a good thing. . .  ;D

Seriously,  glad you're OK, Sir.

Thanks for the kind words metalbot

Apparently I need to get myself some low mag reading glasses to allow my ancient eyes to actually focus on the front sight.
I have apparently been getting fair to good results by "fudging" the images in my mind.
I borrowed a pair of reading glasses and Holy Moley where did that thing come from .... ? I could Actually focus on the front sight.

"results were evident ...."
Yessir I was actually hitting the "fuzzy gray guys".  Now I have to get my shapely [Hey round IS a shape ....] body wrapped around rapid position changes.
[Actually getting into the positions is easier than getting back out of them.  It sure is a good thing we weren't timed on getting back up after stage two ....   ::) ]

The temporary comb "elevator" that I put onto Ms Prudence Wright [the LTR I was kindly allowed to dance with the whole camp thanks to sknaitf (sp?) ] turned out to be a smidge too tall but it did allow me to get my eye up to the sight without the cramps in the back of my neck. Danke mien Freund, Danke.

My first project upon returning from the Davilla [11-08 !] Shoot will be to find a job so I can afford to buy a 10-22 for myself.
then the trigger job, the Tech Sight {TM}  and possibly a stock extension.
*sigh*
One Step at a time ....

Didactic's health issue had us all a little concerned when we heard that it was indeed a coronary infarction [Doctor term for Heart Attack] and that he was in the Emergency Surgery.
Much relief was had when we heard the story of  his nurses commenting on his reading material.  [If he's harassing the nurses he's gonna be OK soonish I thought to myself ....]
Picture = didactic reading his Shot Gun News in the ICU.   :o
Having been married to a cardiac specialized LPN I was relieved to hear that they only did two ball point springs [stints] rather than the "y"  incision.  Smaller holes means quicker healing when they are being made by a Doctor and not a .223 .  ;D

Kudos to all of the Red Hats and a Giant Huzzah to Scout for a truly educational but fun week spent in the Heart of Texas.

Pics of this RBC will be posted soon.

I reviewed the pics and video footage last night.

The video footage on the KD range is amazing, especially the report of rifles at 400, 500, 600 and 700 yards.

We were blessed with near perfect KD range weather.

I will try to figure a way to post some of the video footage.

More to come soon.

Just got home from Davilla ELEVEN oh EIGHT!, after 14 hours in the saddle. Too tired to write much, but much to come later!  700 yard KD? yup. 700 yard hits in the black with an AK? yup. From sitting position? yup.  :D  Lots of fun and learning took place. Looking forward to the pics and all the stories! JB

That Dean, there is always one in the crowd who has to grab all the attention and do something outrageous like have a heart attck to get some more attention. He had worn us all out with his Rev War stories so he decided to have a heart attack so he could regale all the nurses in the ICU with them. ;D

Seriously, Dean stayed at his post until it was certain something was wrong, then he did the right thing by accepting something was wrong and seeking medical attention. Dead instructors are worthless to the program. Dean was a perfect patient and was ticking off his symptoms and medications we had given him etc. while right in the middle of the event, and you can call it what you will, I was there and he had a heart attack.

All of Dean's shennanagens aside ;D, the BC was another important profesional event. Let me say right here that even though I joking referred to JB as the "James Brown" of the Appleseed program, he turned in another brilliant performance at this event. It was a sharp and well instructed event with very little time spent in anything but instruction and putting the instruction to work.

We all have mentors in this program, Fred got me into the program, grabbing me by the scruff of my neck and dragging me into the machine, but JB has kept me on track here and learning. Anyone who has studied under JB will tell you the same. Thanks again JB for all you do for the program and for being someone who we can set our sights on as a role model in our path to becoming "Riflemen".

JB also ran an NRA RSO course, for just his cost, nightly after the long days instruction and we should have 13 more RSO qualified instructors in the program now and able to run events at ranges trhat require them.

All of the Texas Instructors did a great job. Dean, Brett, John and Steve gave up eight days of their vacation time to instruct at the BC, and this is no small t5hing considering they also have volenteered another 20-30 days this year at other events. I am so proud of them I could bust. These four guys will be leading us into 2009 and helping shape the Appleseed program in Texas along with the new instructors from Davilla 11/08.

I have to sign off for now as a storm is going to shut me down and I won't even get this out, but I will post more as soon as it passes.

Wow ! What a great time.  {With Trigger hand raised to the sky ....}

Some of the finest Texans/Patriots I have had the pleasure of meeting I met that week.
OK .... Junior Birdman is only an Honorary Texan BUT he wears it well.  [Hey JB   ;) ]
There was a fellow who came all the way from Colorado to attend. [Yet another Honorary Texan.]

[There are several "Honorary Texans" on this board as well .... in My estimation.]
Eight days spent out in the weather forcing my body [antique to say the least] into positions it has not assumed for eons. [OK OK years ....]

1500 rounds down range and zowie even the gooch can hit a man sized target at 400 yds. Who'd a thunk it ?  I only Thought I was a good shot until I did this Boot Camp.
My Dad [RIP] wasn't much of a teacher but he tried and my brother and I did get sorta good at tin cans on fence posts by the RR embankment back in the day.
[OR so I thought.]
Spend a couple of days with the instructors at any Appleseed event and non-shooters become shooters.
Shooters become good shooters and a good shooter becomes the scourge of tyrants everywhere .... A Rifleman. [meant without any gender identity]

Then add the wonderful central Texas out-of-doors, the firm*  but loving surface of the Texas Heartland, the camaraderie of the Riflemen around you and Time simply flies.
{* Named caliche  but concrete comes to mind ....}
One element of the Appleseed mindset is that the weather is what it is .... you should learn to excel in spite of the adversity regardless of its cause. They hold these Appleseed events in every season and every corner of our land.

MAY I suggest that any who have not practiced the positions do so before the shoot and ....
Buy yourself some of those basketball knee pads for your elbows.
Go ahead ask me how I would know and why I would suggest that ....    ::)
{ the sound of soft whistling is heard .... }

The weather was near perfect the entire week.  We had clear skies, warm daytime temps and cool nights for great sleeping.
A quick moving fall "freshette" that dropped just enough rain to cool the air and earth had the pleasant timing to pass in the night.
That let a cold front come on down and jackets became the breakfast dress code. Tee shirts for lunch and the nights were "brisk" afterwards.
If Texas had had Her share of the rain in this past summer we could have had a "campfire" nightly BUT with the drought going on and the burn ban in effect we had ONE campfire the last night to use as the back drop for the final segment of the Appleseed Project's Founding Fathers storyline.
The three strikes of the match that set the Revolution afire and Forged Freedom [liberty] for the united States from the English Colonies. [the newly created united States of America]
Much more involved than the public school version I happily noted.  And ....
Taken from personal first hand accounts so much more "correct" [accurate] to boot.

I learned more than I can easily express here so will simply and honestly recommend that all and sundry attend an Appleseed nearest to your location when you can. Even the two day [weekend] "Appleseed" is an eye opener and shooting skill enhancer.
Whether you are an excellent shooter, a good shooter, just a plinker [no offense meant PlinkerMS] , or a never shot before newbie. There is much to learn for every level of shooter and ALL are Welcome.

The Appleseed Project is still growing and they are very much in the recruiting mode so are looking for Instructor students at all times. This in an effort to grow the Project and extend its influence. [IE: Wake up the People of We the People.]

The primary emphasis is on getting everyone to qualify on the Army Qualification Test. [AQT]
The AQT while primarily aimed at young men and women in the armed services is a good skill level for all to aspire towards.
The added agitation of having timed segments and difficult positions is apparently designed to stimulate the adrenal gland and get the heart rate, breathing and thinking into "reflex" mode rather than using the conscious thought processes.
[One of the very common quotes on the firing line is "Don't Fuss the shot !" .]

While I am not even nearly interested in actually qualifying as or even thinking of myself as a 19 year old Army Expert Rifleman I do want to be able to keep the "flesh eating mutant chinese paratrooper zombie monkees" [JB's version] at least far enough away that my friends and family have a Fighting Chance  to evac without injury. [Having the Coveted Rifleman Patch would be Cool with a capital "C" tho'.]
IOW the chances of me using the sitting position while defending my gulch are exceedingly slim and none.
Prone and standing on the other hand ....

So ....
In closing up this A.A.R. I would like to say .... IF there is an Appleseed near you GO !
[Don't mention my name and you'll do just fine ....    :-[ ]

gooch

I do hope this meets with acceptance here as a personal report on my first Appleseed and Boot Camp.

Junior Birdman

The Davilla RBC was just another ordinary fantastic experience that I've come to expect at these things! (Anyone who's instructed at one can tell you) It's always better in the company of Riflemen!

The days were warm and sunny, 2 days had some terrific winds which covered everything in that fine Texas dirt. Not a rifle on the line was without problems, so we got in some good lessons in perserverance. It got pretty cool at night but by 0900 we were pulling off the woolies and settling into the routine in T-shirts.

The "Jethro Bodine Memorial Shower" was in resplendant order and managed to put the smack down on my coifeur each night and allow us to all tollerate each other during the week.

Chow was great, and we even had meals ordered in for breakfast and lunch on some days from the local folks.

Oh, yeah, and there was some shooting too!  ;D   Days were pretty long, filled with history, shooting, chow, fellowship around the "Bird House" at night, cleaning rifles and enjoying the company of Riflemen.
We even had one night around the campfire listening to Scout give us his rendition of the Third Strike of the Match, begining with the rise of the Ming Dynasty.

13 rifles on the line Sunday morning, and I believe we managed to find new homes for 9 patches before the week was up.  We had the usual mix, mostly .22s at first, then after the KD segment, more big bores.

Shooters were steeped in the three strikes, rules, steps, and all the ususal fair, and then some got a good dose of "How to make your rifles run in the dust" lessons at night.  All were taught the ropes as if they were going to be teaching it, because let's face it, they WILL be. Even if they don't don the hat of an RWVA Instructor, they will help buddies at the range, so they all learn it, and learn it well.

The "old hats" from RBC ELEVEN oh SEVEN! were there and picked up a few new tricks of the trade and cracked the whip on the new guys without mercy, hammering them into Riflemen one by one.

Shooters braved the scorching sun to sit in the "classroom" for advanced rifleman class, and the next day we arrive on the KD (known distance) range ready for action. Everyone shot well, and we managed to get our last rounds downrange from 700 yards just before it got too dark to see the targets. Even the Birdman got to shoot!  SNAITF achieved superhuman status for his amazing display of skill with the AK at 700 yards but we still wouldn't give him a back rub.

By Saturday, they had received the training they needed to run the line and run it they did. Turn out for the Appleseed was in the neighborhood of two dozen, making for a great shooter to instructor ratio, and the shooters had the privilege of seeing what the Project is all about: Volunteer Americans teaching other Americans about their heritage, history, and marksmanship.
The new Orange Hats did their duties well and hammered out a few Riflemen of their own! Congrats to the new Riflemen and those who instructed them!

Sunday evening is and was the saddest part of the event as folks packed up and drove away into the real world.  Only a lucky few remained to spend one more night in the prairie, and I know that as I looked skyward at the billions of stars on that night my thoughts returned to the week that had past. Clouds began to move in, and it was as if all nature had held back until we were through, and the rain began to fall in the wee hours of morning.

I saddled up about 0400 and headed east. 14 hours of driving ahead of me. (I don't know how The Guy does it!)  As I cleared the last fence and hit the paved road the thought occured to me as it has so many times before: It truly IS better in the company of Riflemen.

Davilla!!!  Eleven Oh Eight!!!

This was in fact an AWESOME and Life Changing experience!  For many years I have been blessed to have the tools and the toys, however I lacked the proper training.  Now, thanks to an Appleseed Boot Camp, I know that I KNOW that I can in fact control the "Rifleman's Quarter Mile" - in all directions.  And in today's environment, THAT is a good feeling which truly is life changing!

At Davilla, Eleven Oh Eight, the high level of camaraderie was exceeded only by the stellar level of the quality of Instruction!

To Scout, Junior Birdman, Voortrekker, Sir Not Appearing In This Film, Didactic, and all the other instructors (whose usernames I do not know):  THANKS!! You have forever altered me for the better!

You guys forged TEN new Riflemen on the anvil of Liberty, in that short period of time!!!  Amazing!

It was a supreme pleasure to meet, camp with, and shoot with all the other Newbies!  I look forward to many more exciting 'Shoots' with you guys and all the weekend attendees!

Stay Safe!

Blessings,

In no particular order - Top, Gooch, Metalbot, Kevin, Dennis, Austin, TheUpsetter, Respiratory Paul, Charles, my homies Roy and Blink, Lex T. Concord, Kyle - GOOD SHOW!

What a great bunch of shooters to be with. The best of the best. We arrived as strangers, yet left bonded from the fellowship that Rifleman have - bonded in ways that many in the world would envy if they could get their squirrelly minds to understand it. I truly enjoyed the fun, like-minded conversations, personalities, humor ("You wanna penny?", "There's some lovely filth over here!" ;D) and fellowship that was Davilla 1108 Boot Camp. I look forward to being on the line again with each of you and spending time with you again sometime soon.

Missing people who wanted to attend but couldn't make it.

The reality that it had come to an end when it came time to break camp. It is truly better in the company of Rifleman.

Didatic (glad you are invincible!!!!!!), Voortrekker, LabRat and Doug - we've come a long way in the last year and I'm glad because that means we and the other Texas Black Sheep will keep on trucking. Thank you!

Scout and Junior Birdman - as always, thanks for the hospitality and everything you do for us and offer to us. I truly appreciate your company and everything you do.

The Appleseed after Boot Camp was a wonderful group of shooters as well. Jason, Colin, Big D, Robert, Travis, Don, Dan, Jon, Crystal, Kendra, Mary, "the arfcommers", lots of other familiar faces and new faces, made it all worthwhile. Our new IITs ran a wonderful and safe Appleseed event.

Congrats to all the new Rifleman! Your persistence has a reward! HUZZAH! HUZZAH! HUZZAH!

For those that didn't make the score - FRET NOT. Persistance will pay off. Big Time.

See you on the line.

I went to the Davilla weekend shoot and brought my 10 year old daughter with me.

I've been to an Appleseed event before, but I really felt this one was different. I was so impressed with the detailed instruction.

Although my daughter didn't end up shooting, she learned several valuable lessons. Most importantly to me, the importance of how to safely handle a firearm... She has those safety rules locked in! Trust me, she pop quizzed me on them during our journey home!  She also REALLY enjoyed the "strike of the match" stories!

I'll be back... And I'd love to be more invloved with the Appleseed program (orange hat, hint, hint)

A very special thanks to all who have volunteered their time for this program and the cause. I really enjoyed meeting everyone at the Davilla shoot too.

Thanks again!

Kendra fails to mention that she earned the first Rifleman patch of the Appleseed with a very convincing score.

Great job this weekend.  Orange Hats are available for the asking.  Scout insists that Orange Hats are the path to fame, glory and riches.

Even though we I don't know you, we missed you. There will be future Boot Camps. There's a slot with your name on it.

Davilla has room for about 100 shooters on the line. I look forward to the day in the near future where a Davilla RBC has 100 shooters on the line.

Even though we didn't make it to KD range during the Davilla AS on Sunday, there were more than a few Rifleman forged on the 25m line.

Don't believe I've had the pleasure of meeting you, Sir, but I've met several of the guys in these pictures.  I look forward to it. Ever since I got my rifleman patch and orange hat in the hurricane Appleseed, I have not been able to escape. I WILL be there for the Dec 6&7 Appleseed.

Once again guys, it looks like an awesome week.

That photo of you at the KD 400 line really reinforces the Wow factor of snaitf and JB's shots from the 700 line.  IMHO

Good to meet everyone there, even if it was only for the weekend. Glad and proud to see this year's crop of Texas-grown instructors coming along and look forward to hammering out some more Riflemen alongside y'all in the future.

May the Texas Cadre only grow!

Riflemen, the stars of Davilla were out for RBC 11-08, and for the AS weekend.

Junior Birdman observed Sunday afternoon that I proudly wore the red badge of AS on my weakside elbow.

Thanks Voortrekker for the great pics.  They are already having a positive impact on AS.

To SNAITF, and the rest of the ITs I look forward to instructing at future AS events.

period and enthusiastically fight the soft war.

See you in December.

There's a safety issue in Pic #11 that all of you need to know about. Look at the crooked line, with some people out in front of others.

It may not look like much, but being just that far out of alignment means that the shooters out in front are much closer to entering the 45 degree safety cone of their neighbors muzzles than they think - and than they should be.

It doesn't look as near unsafe as it is.

So it will fool you. Take it from me, as it took some time (and observation) on the Appleseed Trail before I understood - being out "in front" like that - even a little bit - means the next guy's muzzle has to travel a LOT less in your direction to sweep you.

When you're watching a bunch of people on the line, you don't need that safety margin to suddenly turn razor-thin on you. And having people out front of the general line is a fast way to have the safety margin turn razor thin on you - and you don't even know it!

Remember, each of you, and all the rest of us, that it takes only one slip, one accident...
