Simple Glare Fix

So I was at the Osasge Boot Camp and had a few people complaining about a bad glare on their rear sight....(Guy was one of them) and so I got to thinking about it and I realized that I never have had a glare problem on my CZ 22 that has a hooded rear sight so I was like DUH!!! I came up with a quick fix that as far as I know it works in all cases. Take some dark colored duct tape and tear of a small piece and then tear it in half long ways and tape it to your rear sight in an arch like shape. So far I did it to 10/22 tech sights, ruger stock sights and a Mossin Naget and it works great. but yeah this info might already be out there but it might be one of those long forgotten arts. See duct tape does fix every thing.

Good call.
Maybe there is a website for tape usage we can put that on, lol

I took some scrap plastic conduit and split it and placed it over the rear sight. A smaller diameter piece fits over the front sight. Both pieces can be placed on the barrel when not in use on the sights.  JB

Magic Marker works passable as sight black.

Not as good as the real stuff, or a smudge pot, but works well enough.

A Zippo lighter with a little diesel fuel (and the usual fluid) in it works almost as well as a small smudge pot. Learned that one by accident.

A hat works just fine as well. Place the bill over the edge of your sights, instant shadow!

I am told that burning Styrofoam under the front sight post will do a fine job of blackening it out. Not very "green", but works in a pinch.

I know some of my "fellow" HP shooters use very fancy methods.

I just painted mine yesterday with a cue tip and flat black paint again, as I have a problem (eyesight) with blurring and reflections that are not really there, but I have used black magic marker for years and it does just fine.

Even a BIC will do if you hiold it close enough to keep it from burning clean.
a Zippo does the same way, just hold it close enough that teh flame does not burn clean.
Candles oil lamps are OK
Magic MarKjers are sort of glossy and still leave a reflective surface.

Teh real deal is a carbide lamp. when the carbide is wet it makes acetylene burns real sooty
Styrofoam (styrene) is nothing but solidified acetylene and burns the same sooty way ;D

We've burned a few plastic knives and spoons at RBC. Makes a nice, sooty smoke that actually does quite well.  I keep a lighter and plastic knife in the kit just in case I run out of the spray on sight black. I think Ken Grant taught us this one at Ramseur RBC #2.

I think I like Slim's solution best, but it doesn't help with the front sight unless you've got a really long bill.   :D  JB

One shooter at Osage Beach was having that problem on the front sight on a SKS, he used an ammo box end flap and duct tape and wrapped the sight with that.
Had to readjust it occasinally from recoil. Other than that it worked fine.

I used this when we didnt have a plastic utensil to melt and i think one of the guns was a loner so they didnt want to do any melting or drawing on a gun that wasnt theirs

Because we were facing into the sun, the tape shade was working when hats, lighters, etc, weren't.  Until then, the front sight was almost impossible to see through the glare.  I rarely shoot facing south, so I thought it was good to know.
