Its not new information but its a different presentation. Some of us, me included, may find Fred's guide to becoming a Rifleman a little daunting. Lots of words, tons and tons of information. You may also be or know those people who just learn better with some pictures and fewer words at a time. You may also know those people who are thinking about Appleseed but just need a little motivation. I put this thing together to use at my unit (the Army runs off Powerpoint) I hope you guys enjoy it. I am also up for any suggestions or fixes.  I also posted up the Article referenced to in the presentation

Great stuff folks.

I know I plan on using some of this, both in my Guard unit, and out on the Appleseed Trail.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

Sounds like New Englanders to me.

These will make a great presentation at Board meetings for setting up Appleseeds at host gun ranges! Thanks!

I got some suggestions in PM's and have most of those done. I will add whatever I get, as this is for the group. I will upload the final Copy in a few days to give everyone a chance to drop a note.

US CAV,

I know Fred would prefer....Fire the RIFLE without moving it... etc.  We try not to use the words "weapon, firearm, gun, etc."  It is simply a Rifle.

Otherwise, very nice.  I would like to use this at my club.

EEL
Do not fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have war......Let it start here.

Fred

Guys, "US CAV" is military. The presentation he created (and well-done it was, too!) was prepared for military use, not for Appleseed use - hence the "non-Appleseed" terms.

It should not be used until it is reformatted to Appleseed.

Since I understand US CAV is currently deployed, one of us will have to do it.

     Any takers?

I'll attempt this.

I just reviewed the version posted on Oct. 23, and saw a few places where 'weapon' was used.  I'll switch those to 'rifle'.

I saw one spelling mistake, 'foward' instead of 'forward'.  I'll fix that.

The last slide has a very large font, and says
RIFLEM
EN

Instead of RIFLEMEN.

I'll look at each slide carefully for anything else.

I should be able to get this done before Feb. 14.  I'll try to get at least one pass done before Feb. 7.

I've made one pass through.  A couple of spelling corrections, a few punctuation changes (you'll note I didn't say corrections on the punctuation  ;D)

If anyone sees anything else that should be changed, holler, and I'll get on it.
(modified to fix typo in my own post.  Sheesh.  It was underlined in red ... dunno how I missed it.)

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here or anything.

In my reading of everything trying to prepare for my first Appleseed, I came across this thread here.  I opened the power point presentations so I could read and hopefully learn.  Some of the slides.... well... were hurtful trying to read.  There were so many words on some slides that the words all blended in together and stuff (at least in my head).  I had to strain to read certain ones, and had to read those several times to understand what they were saying.

I hope y'all don't mind, but.... well I tweaked it some.

I didn't change words, just fonts, colors, backgrounds and layouts. (okay maybe a little grammar and punctuation....  ;))

What do you think?

Oh phew.  I was nervous y'all might get upset that a newbie went ahead and did that.

I'm so excited!  Can't wait til April 18th!!  ;D

Newbie or not, you're bailing.

Now, one thing you could go back and fix is the one frame that has me listed as VTANG. It's really VTARNG. Not your doing, but a small thing that should be fixed. I'm Army Guard (ARNG), not Air Guard (ANG). The guy that made the original didn't know the correct acronym, as he's Regular Army (and in Afghanistan right now).

Very nice work.   A few suggestions

For slide 2, I think a left justification is better.  Slide 10 is where the VTANG should be changed to VTARNG
I could fix those, but that's the limit of my Powerpoint skill.

In the NPOA series, I think that the red background makes it tougher to read than the green background of the other sections
In the rapid fire section, the fancy background makes it tougher to read.
I don't know powerpoint well enough to change the background.

Good improvements on the fonts, bullet lists, bold text for primary points, etc!

So, what Ivy?  I am a Penn grad, from a long time ago ....

For a presentation to signify topic changes each "section" should have a different background color scheme, while the overall presentation should have a color theme.  So, first section is the "riflemen" set (green), second section is the "npoa" set (red), third section is the six steps (different green), fourth section is rapid fire and summary (red - with effects).
I could make solid colors on each section, and I could make them any color you want, really, but a good presentation has transition between sections. (I've been an executive assistant in Fortune 100 companies for years.... this is what I did for a living - making "pretty" presentations (among other things).  :)  Penn grad or not, it was "fine" before - now it's "pretty"  ^-^  ;D  >:D )
I will play with background colors vs. text colors a bit more and see what is visually easier to read. If you have color suggestions, let me know.  I could do greys and blues straight through.  I like the army-green colors, and I like the red emphasis when you get to rapid fire, but that's just my preference - I'll put whatever color y'all want.

Nickle

Bailing, as in helping bail out the good ship "USA" (it's sinking).

In other words, a good thing.

Excellent work!

Oh, hey.  At IIT Bootcamp, I remember step 3 in the six steps being called "respiratory pause".   I notice most of the other steps say somewhere on the slide "This is known as...  (XYZ)"  Can I put "This is known as Respiratory Pause" on slide #18 for step 3?

And, SkyDaver, I just did slide 2 as left justified......  hmm....   I don't like it so much.  Are you sure you want it that way??!!!  Positive?!

I liked the Army green background, as well.  It was the red that I found a little tough on my eyes.  The multicolored background washed out the text too much for me.

I understand and like the color transition between sections.

The justification on slide 2 is just my personal preference, if you think it's better centered, go for it.

It is much better looking now thanks to your efforts; we don't need to hash this out to the final shade.  Perfect is the enemy of good

Amen brother.

Okay here's another edit.  Let me know what y'all think.  I changed the NPOA red to a different shade, and the text to a better contrasting shade.  On the Rapid Fire and Summary pages, I changed the text color to a bit different for better contrast as well.  Hopefully that helps.  (And, Nickle, I fixed your title.)

If there's other presentations or materials you want me to tinker with, let me know.  All I do all day is sit at my restaurant and hope I get a few customers, so I'm sitting here not doing much and would be happy to help.

Just wanted to say thanks for polishing the powerpoint. I made it for my guys before we deployed and posted it here so ya'll could finish it for Appleseed use.

Ivyleague, I've been watching this thread, and thanks for the perfect segway into the following:

Because now it's time for me to step in and ask you energetic guys, "What are you really doing for the program?"

And "When are you going to start doing it?"

Have you checked out the EPT program?

Wanna bet that will make a bigger impact on the future of AS than a powerpoint program that, as far as I can see, has seen too little real use? (Anyone count the number of times it's actually been used? Yeah, I know the answer: "Not enough!" :) )

I'm not trying to upset any applecarts here.

You guys are obviously smart, capable, and I have no doubt you'd like to see AS successful.

If so, if that really is the fact, PM ff, and tell him you have been shanghai-ed to come over and help out.

Isn't that why all of us are here? To make this thing work?

I'd like to see you guys make EPT really rock!

I have no doubt you can do it.

The real use will be at (among other things) gun shows, where we have a laptop running, talking about the program.

Not yet.  I eyeballed that thread the other day, and thought since I didn't know what it was or what any of that meant (yet) that perhaps I wasn't qualified enough to PM ff yet.   :-\

I'm sure it probably will......  I'll PM ff if you think "anyone" can do it.  It would have helped me to PM ff several days ago - if on the thread there was a bit more explanation as to what EPT program does and/or entails.  I'm the type of person that, if I don't feel qualified, I won't even ask more details....   :-[

Dude, I'm tellin' ya, it'd work great!  Hell, I'm sure we have at least one dozen attractive women in Appleseed, no?  Calendar of Appleseed ladies???  Shots of chicks in high heels, tight jeans, white tee shirts, and rifles!  That'd get the attention of at least half the sheeple men :P  LOL!!

Hell, I bet if ya held a contest among the ladies, you'd get plenty of picture submissions :P  :)  I bet Fred would be HAPPY to judge.   @)
