Minutes of Angle

After attending her first Appleseed, my daughter was still a bit confused about minutes of angle, and didn't entirely understand how to translate what she saw on the target into sight adjustments.  She's 13 years old, and hasn't yet learned in school some of the geometry that might help her to understand the math behind it, so I wrote up a (hopefully) easy to understand, essentially math-free explanation of minutes of angle, and wanted to get some feedback.

The article is posted here What's In A Minute?, and I hope you guys (and gals!) can take a look and let me know what you think!  If anyone is interested in using this you're more than welcome too - let me know and I'll be happy to post a PDF copy which can easily be saved and printed.
"The great body of our citizens shoot less as times goes on. We should encourage rifle practice among schoolboys, and indeed among all classes, as well as in the military services by every means in our power. Thus, and not otherwise, may we be able to assist in preserving peace in the world... The first step in the direction of preparation to avert war if possible, and to be fit for war if it should come is to teach men to shoot." -Theodore Roosevelt

Love the flashlight metaphor. Teaching IMC this weekend to a youth-heavy group; I'll bring a flashlight out and help them visualize it, conditions permitting (it's a covered range so I'm optimistic we'll have enough shadow).
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." Samuel Adams

"Just relax in the sling; we're going to make fun of you." -Pete!

Brilliant! in every sense of the word. I am going to use your metaphor from now on. Thank you for sharing. LS6
President Reagan is quoted as saying 'There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don't care who gets the credit.' This is a valid observation, and a powerful tool.

Very good article. Thanks.

Sweet simplicity. I can relax into that. Thank you!

Credit where credit is due, the flashlight analogy is one I first remember hearing at an Appleseed shoot in Toccoa earlier this year.  Mechanic was the one who did IMC at that shoot and be did a great job!

One of the 'ah ha' moments I had with MOA/IMC was why there's an angle at all. Once you introduce the idea that your line of sight is straight but because of gravity we must ANGLE the barrel up to cross our line of sight - voila.

Ah Ha! +1
If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. (James Madison)

"Young man, what we meant in going for those Redcoats was this: we always had governed ourselves and we always meant to. They didn't mean we should."
(Captain Levi Preston, of the Danvers militia, at age 91, remembering the day)

That it is an indispensable duty which we owe to God, our country, ourselves and posterity, by all lawful ways and means in our power to maintain, defend and preserve those civil and religious rights and liberties, for which many of our fathers fought, bled and died, and to hand them down entire to future generations.  Suffolk Resolves, September 9, 1774, attributed to Dr. Joseph Warren

I've had awesome success using a squirt gun to illustrate that point. I typically do it during KD but I may try to work it into IMC.

As a Gardener, I've used the analogy of watering a row of plants with a hose and the actions one must take when "reaching out" to the next plant by adjusting the angle of the hose (barrel / come ups / etc). The squirt gun...  :)

Love the squirt gun example!  That's perfect!
