Who Knew?

In a "Today in History" web blog, I noticed the following posting:

January 11, 1759:  The first American life insurance corporation, for "poor and distressed" Presbyterian ministers and their widows and children, was chartered in Philadelphia.

Was life insurance an option for the families in Boston area in 1775?
