Where to drill?

I bought two Ruger 10/22s last week and neither has swivel studs or even a place to install swivel studs.

I know I need to put in a set of Uncle Mike's 115 B swivel studs in each rifle.  Where do I drill the holes to install them?

On the muzzle, approx. 1" from the end of the stock.
On the Butt stock approx. 1" from the end.
This should give enough room for a good grip and not crack the stock.

I mount the swivel studs 3" from either end of the stock.

The better fit for the front stud is 1" in front of where the support hand rests under the forearm. This will allow the support arm to be supported by the sling when the arm is relaxed as it should be.

I agree with the front stud 1" in front of the hand but I believe that the rear stud should be 1" from the butt to allow maximum sling to body contact in standing.

also, use drill bits intended for wood (not steel) - "brad point" IIRC.  otherwise your drill bit might slide a little and your swivel will end up a bit off center.

it might even be worth have a gun shop do it - some have fancy "drill guide" doodads to ensure the swivels are right down the middle.

I agree with putting the front swivel right in front of where your hand goes in a normal prone position, with your arm making a nice triangle shape to the stock, which helps keep the sling from slipping down your arm.  This puts the swivel in a lot closer to me than where many factory sling swivels come.  I assume this is because factory swivels are designed for a wide variety of shooter sizes.  With that in mind, if your LTR is going to be used as a loaner, you might put the front swivel a little farther forward than where you like it so it will work for a variety of other people.

When you're putting studs on a wood stock, put a squirt of Elmer's glue in the hole when you install your stud.

Or put in multiple studs is what I do, one in the normal place then 1 or 2 toward the butt about 3" apart, just move the QD where it fits...O.L.

And on a composit stock, use a bit of JB weld to hold on the screw end under the barrel and pop
off the butt stock cover and put some more JB weld on that screw end.

For the front swivel mount; why not get an aftermarket barrel band that has a stud for the sling. Or there is a stud that attaches to the barrel band screw. eBay item # 300648281764

That loop looks a little small to fit 1 1/4 sling. It might be just 1".
The real beauty of drilling your own hole is that you put where your hand reaches, and get support from the swivel stud.

Probably is a 1 inch swivel - oops got to cut another tip off GI sling
Thanx for ebay link ,having the barrel band as shown would not stop a person from adding another for themselves .
The standard m14 swivels are located where my forward hand touches it in prone,I recall wishing I had callouses on those portions of my hand that contacted it !

I don't like the studs that are part of the barrel band... having sling tension on something that is directly clamped to the barrel seems like it would cause a bigger POI shift from unslung positions than having the sling on the stock.  I actually take the barrel bands off my Rugers altogether.

Agreed.

Although the barrel band attachment is an option, I prefer them on the stock itself.
"Unhappy it is, though, to reflect that a brother's sword has been sheathed in a brother's breast and that the once-happy and peaceful plains of America are either to be drenched with blood or inhabited by a race of slaves.  Sad alternative!  But can a virtuous man hesitate in his choice?" - George Washington - from a letter to a close friend after the events of April 19, 1775

"There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our (the United States) overthrow.  Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter.  From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger.  I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing." - Daniel Webster, June 1, 1837
