Shooting golf balls for target practice.

I found a great way to practice shooting at unknown distance with my 10/22.  My range allows me to shoot prone and at any target as long as it is not glass.  I usually put out 10 golf balls in a line at 25 yards and shoot them out as far as I can before they hit the berm at 100 yards.  The fun thing is you can shoot the same ball multiple times.

I also use it introduce people to AS.  When I see someone blazing away with their new AR or other tactical rifle I throw out a golf ball to about 25 yards and offer to let them shoot it.  I learned that if I offer to let them shoot an AQT they most always say they practice shooting at 100 yards.  When they can't hit the little ball at 25 yards I usually get a laugh.  I then help them out and shoot it from 25 yards to about 60-70 yards in the first shot and then shoot it from the 70 to over the berm at 100 yards with the next shot.  Some time it bounces to about 90-100 yards and I offer to let them practice at 100 yards to hit the ball over the berm.

I usually make a joke about the zombie apocalypse and one day they might have to make a 100 yard head shot.  I then tell them how I recently learned to shoot by the numbers at an AS and that is how I can now easily hit a golf ball from 25-100 yards.

Please don't be to hard on me if you think this is a bad idea. I take in to account ricochet.  I am also open to constructive criticism if there is a legitimate safety concern.

I like to shoot golf balls too.  I use this to do the job:

Old Guy:  Do it long enough and you get really good at it.

Rifleman:  Sacramento:  Four Ought Nine
Full Distance:  Red Bluff:  What year was that?
Pistoleer:  Hat Creek:  Three Twenty One

Make yourselves good scouts and good rifle shots in order to protect the women and children of your country if it should ever become necessary.

Is that a mini golf ball cannon? Maybe start a new shotgun sport. Why shoot skeet when you can shoot golf balls launched out of cannons?

It is a black powder Civil War Coehorn Mortar that launches golf balls.  This one is only 29% of the size of a real one which would have launched a 24 lb exploding steel ball.

So long as the shooting range is suitable I think golf balls or other ground reactive targets are a good choice.  They are low cost, and they are more interesting than just paper targets which is important for many people (especially youth).  I put them out on the sand berm where the backdrop and soil composition are known to be rock free and go for it.

Sounds like a good way to aim small and miss small.

Reactive Targets are always a plus, especially for the nuts we are currently trying to crack.
I might take a few to the range today!
Good job thinking out side the box!
That four MOA golf ball at 25m turns into a 1MOA at 100m! ..:..

Eaglescouter: do you have drawings and are they available? How much of what grade powder per charge?

Eaglescouter: do you have drawings and are they available? How much of what grade powder per charge?

1.5 teaspoons of FFG Black Powder.
No published drawings due to the potential liability issues (but perhaps if we can get more folks off the couch and involved in their communities and local governments we might be able to change that.......)

This trick to shooting golf balls past 50 yards is to aim at the base of the ball where it touches the ground.  Kind of like the army pop  targets.  If your shot is low it will still hit the ball and it gives you a little room for error.

I just made up 8 of these little puppies. A piece of waxed twine with a slip knot held by a length of 200 MPH tape. I'll hang these at 25 yards, put a piece of paper behind them to see where my misses are and give it a go. i hope I get home before it gets dark.

What a great idea.

Thanks, MJ52

Awesome.

I used to leave my shot up "Rifleman" AQTs posted with a fresh one beside it labled "Your Turn" at the range.
"Unhappy it is, though, to reflect that a brother's sword has been sheathed in a brother's breast and that the once-happy and peaceful plains of America are either to be drenched with blood or inhabited by a race of slaves.  Sad alternative!  But can a virtuous man hesitate in his choice?" - George Washington - from a letter to a close friend after the events of April 19, 1775

"There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our (the United States) overthrow.  Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter.  From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger.  I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing." - Daniel Webster, June 1, 1837

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
