I see a lot of 10/22's that eject to the side and/or rear. I see a some that eject forward.

What determins the direction? Can it be changed with a mod? If so, DIY?

Thanks

I would imagine it has something to do with the tension in the extractor spring and maybe the angle at which the extractor is cut. No proof for that though.

It has a lot to do with the drag/speed of the bolt and the type of ammunition as well.

I agree with YHJ,
Because on the line one day a family showed up with new oversized charging handles on all of there rifle and they were 4 different 10/22's all malfunctioned, and this was the only modification to all for rifles when removed they performed like at their first AS.

I am sure YHJ is on to something there. I'm looking for an understanding of the how's and whys. Do I want to excelerate the bolt back, or retard it? Do I want HV SV or something slower? How about the ejector, longer, shorter....? Extractor tension?

As to the oversized charging handles they have been shown in slo-mo in many cases to deflect cases back into the ejection port for an instant stove pipe as well as add too much mass for the recoil spring to overcome to insure trouble free feeding. Kinda like riding the bolt forward, not a good idea.

Mind if I ask what brand?

If the rifle is just scattering it's shells, it doesn't say much. As the rifle gets broke in, like 2k to 4 k rounds, it may settle down. If the rifle shoots 4 MOA without FTF or FTE, and never drops two cases in the same place, who cares? Before we get into the hows and whys I gotta ask...

What problem are we trying to solve?

PS. If I had to point at one thing that caused rifle issues more than any other, it would be aftermarket parts.

YHJ,
I'm not sure I'm trying to solve a problem, just had a why's that moment at a shoot on Sunday. My 10/22, many mods made slowly over 40 years throws brass about 1 to 2 o'clock with HV ammo. Kinda scatters SV. Then I noticed 2 10/22's shooting out of the same box of ammo, 1 going back at 4 o'clock and the other scattering. Pretty sure that they were both new and unaltered.

So the only problem I am really trying to solve is my own "HUH?" and maybe hoping for a field expident cure to kick brass forward to help the kiddies.

YHJ is right.  The only positive info. you could get from this is if the same rifle/ammo changed ejection patterns with all other factors being equal.  But other than that there are too many factors, unlike a gas operated rifle where you could tune the system for more consistency, the blow back is just gonna fling them rounds out of there.  You could change springs and extractors and bolts and ammo and ejector and still not end up with your desired results.  I doubt you'd even be able to replicated it once you've found that sweet combination.  Your best bet would be a shell deflector of some sort.  I don't even know that they make them for .22's.
Your best solution would be to find out where the shells are generally ejecting an position your shooters accordingly.
