I'm looking for some advice..

I just picked up a CZ Scout for my son (8yr old), and I need to add a sling. It does not come with swivel mounts, so I need to get both mounts and a sling.

I was looking at this Uncle Mike's wood type swivel http://www.shopunclemikes.com/detail/TCL+UM48+1

Would this be a good choice ?  Any pointers on doing the installation besides the obvious?

Also, what sling should be used? I see many different types available.

Thanks,

-B

Be sure that you get 1 1/4" swivels and a GI sling. It is what we sagest to use and most everyone ends up getting one after an Appleseed.

Did this on my CZ.

Simple change out. Unscrew the old swivels.

The Uncle Mikes are a much bigger thread.

But they will hand tighten into the old screw holes.

Be sure to get the 1 1/4" size swivel and the USGI SLing.

That swivel package should do just fine for mounting.  A pair of 1&1/4 inch swivels can be easily swapped out to allow for a USGI type sling.  I did much the same on my daughter's CZ Scout but I had to  think for a while before I remebered that the stock did not come with swivels from the factory.  Don't be surprised if your son outshoots you.  The Scout is a very accurate little rifle.

In my experience in the last 3 shoots I've attended with my son & buddies using my factory mounted front sling swivel, I've had 3 guns strip the swivel out. 2 Savage MKII's & a CZ452.

The CZ is natural walnut so it held up better being screwed back in. The laminated Savage stocks have failed to the point that the barreled actions are going to have to be pulled & I'll have to put in one of the brass or aluminum insert models available from Brownell's.

Shooters may want to consider epoxying the sling stud in before problems of it backing out start to manifest.

Thanks for the advice on the sling..

On a slightly different topic, but the same rifle....what would be an appropriate reasonably priced scope?

Any comments on the BSA Sweet 22 6-18x40 AO ?  http://www.natchezss.com/Optics.cfm?contentID=productDetail&brand=OS&prodID=OS22618X40AO&prodTitle=BSA Sweet 22 6-18x40 AO Riflescope Standard Reticle Matte

I sagest a low power of 4 for shooting 25 yard targets. The lower power will keep you from seeing extra movement like your heart beat. Witch can distract you when your first learning to shoot correctly.
As for the price at is up to you and you want to put in to it. I will give you the same advice I got from a friend of mine ,Who owns a gun shop. "As long as it is not a Wal-mart special"

Take a look at the Nikon 2-7x32.  It is actually a shotgun scope so the parallax is set at 75yds.  I have several on 10-22s and Marlin 795s.  They work great!  I keep the power turned down to 2x.  You get the advantage of a scope for old eyes but you don't see the bullet holes and start chasing the target.

Going back to my original question about the sling for the CZ Scout...

For a GI type sling, would a leather sling be better than cotton or nylon?  The leather seem much more substantial...

Also, would anyone recommend the swivel mounts that are countersunk? They seem more aesthetically pleasing when the sling is removed, and less likely to get in the way.

A better alternative for the front mount may be the type that are a barrel band, so I would not need to put a hole in the front of the stock, and it would be farther forward, as to not interfere with gripping the stock. Any comments on this strategy? Any specific parts recommended for this one?

Thanks,

NO!
Sorry, did not mean to yell.  Do not go the barrel band route if you can avoid it.  Anything contacting the barrel can induce error.  A sling mount pulling on the barrel WILL induce error.  On the question of leather vs woven, the woven slings are infinitely adjustable and can support your weight and mine swinging from them.  I think they will be just fine.  Leather is good for the authentic look and feel but are not an improvement just a difference.

I will try to get a picture of my daughter's Scout with sling and scope attached.  It does not suffer from any loss of asthetics.

If you have not yet purchased your sling, I would suggest that the cotton web sling will not slip as readily as does the nylon. Once the sling is adjusted any slippage can drastically affect your grouping. Most of the newer leather slings which are available have been "chrome" versus "vegetable' tanned and are thus quite stiff and slick, therefor also subject to slippage. They are also considerably more expensive than a web sling. The money saved could be put to ammunition for actual shooting, which after all, is going to help you improve your skills more quickly.
The swivel attachment to the barrel is not a good idea as the tension on the sling can actually affect the barrels ability to vibrate uniformly from shot to shot, thus affecting POI. Additionally there is the probability that the barrel will be influenced in the direction of the pull or tension of the sling which may not be uniform from shot to shot, thus affecting POI negatively also.
