[Rocket Man]

These are the dog days of Summer, yes indeed.  This is the time of year when that couch starts looking mighty attractive, especially when it's situated under an air conditioner, and it's 100 degrees outside.  But us patriots know better. 

Last weekend we returned to the Burro Canyon Shooting Park for another chance to hone our shooting skills and learn about the men and women that won us our freedom to do so in the first place.  And despite dire predictions of the weatherfolk, it was downright pleasant last Saturday, just warm enough to remind you that it was Summer!  Jerry at Burro Canyon had set aside the Tac 6 range for us, a cute little crease in the San Gabriel canyons, complete with shade and tables and peace and quiet... until the sounds of Liberty Volleys echoed through the hills!   

Six brave patriots came to join us, from experienced shootists and returning Appleseeders to one fellow who'd never even touched a rifle before.    Shooter Andrew, a big wheel at Calguns, came out to help build a stronger shooting community and take in the history and heritage.  And we were joined by a brave young man on his way to West Point, and his father there to cheer him on.  After safety briefing we tore up a few Redcoats, and we could see the spark of Rifleman ability slumbering within... and so, we set to work.   

Such a nice bunch of folks.  They ate up every course of instruction, and groups shrank rapidly, even as we fought through the usual mechanical gremlins.  Our new IIT Psych Doc held the line and ran us smartly through course after course.  At lunch, IIT Penny's Dad (also of Calguns fame) arrived to lay down the First Strike of the Match and help get us through a rapidly warming afternoon.  We finished with a pair of AQT's and some pretty decent scores.   

And then, onto Sunday.  The path of the Rifleman is sometimes difficult, and Mr. Sun chose to add to the challenge with a taste of blazing heat.  Nonetheless, our students persisted, with all of them lasting to the last AQT.  They rose to the challenge early:  Our morning Redcoat revealed that every single one -- 100% nailed the "head shot."  Daniel Morgan would be proud!   

By day's end, we finally began to melt in the heat.  Nobody quite made it across the magic 210 line this time, but it won't be long.  Kevin led the field with a personal best 203, just a sneeze away from aweseomeness.  Andrew was close behind witha 198.  Dani left us in awe more than once with her groups, 2 MOA or better at times.  And Burt overcame mysterious double-feeding issues to turn in a Sharpshooter score, including a 43/50 on standing.   

Thanks again to all of our great students.  All in all, it was practically a perfect weekend.  If you missed it, well...  See you at the next one?

Excellent shoot last weekend despite the heat!

My (Orange) hat is off to the dedicated group of shooters who stood their ground admirably in the face of the August sun at Burro Canyon last weekend. Several of you will clearly get your patches soon with some minor tuning and persistence. I hope to see all of you at another shoot in the near future!
