Transporting rifles or handgun to a shoot on a motorcycle?

I posted this question on Open Carry and did not get what seemed to be a definitive  answer.  It looks like I may be in a position where I may be going to shoots on a motorcycle and want to look into the legality.

There is the federal law where you can transport through any state if they are locked up. But I am more interested in Missouri law.

Thanks!

Longshot

I have an old friend who used to ride around St. Louis on a bullet bike with a Class 3 HK MP5 slung on his back. Never got stopped to my knowledge, but got some looks in the McDonald's drive-thru.

A motorcycle is merely another motor vehicle, and standard state laws apply. If it were me, I would bag or case said firearm, both to protect the gun, and to prevent extra unwanted attention.

OH, the above applies only in the sorta-free state of Missouri....     ::)

Joe, I'm assuming this is on the KLR 650? Let me know your setup - I'm going to own one by the fall and I'm interested in riding it to shoots. Have you got a scabbard rigged up?

-Jesse

tittiger

You guessed it.
A scabbard is a great idea Jessy though maybe not discrete.  On my first KLR I had  aluminum panniers that made a wide platform and you could easily strap a cased rifle across the bike there.

I will probably have to get tools to do the dohickey and also valve tools for this bike as I sold all of that stuff. If you want we can get together and do both on both our bikes some day this fall.

These are my 2 favorite KLR forums ---
There are over 7,000 KLR riders to this forum.

If you took the action/ barrel out of the stock it would br shorter and maybe fit in a back pack, just a thought.

Thanks much Ian not a bad idea at all especially if THSTF. (Is that allowed?)

I am as of today the proud owner of a 2006 -- 650 KLR.  I can now afford to make the Dadeville shoot it looks like if I can get plates by Friday.

Congrats on the bike  O0 I picked up an 07 KLR650, my first motorcycle, a couple of months back. So far I am loving every moment of it, even the wrenching  #) Changed the doohickey when I first got it and last week did the valves. So is the KLR the bike of a rifleman?

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't see anything here:
http://www.moga.mo.gov/statutes/chapters/chap571.htm

that's not to say LE won't mess with you or even misapply an unrelated law if you carry a rifle in a way they don't like.  (Like how Wisconsin charges openly-carrying folks with "disturbing the peace" because open carry is legal there.)

I've been carrying rifles on motorcycles most of my life - for the most part, locked in a case with all ammo in a seperate container has always been the legally safe route for me, application of the law should be the same whether the case is in the trunk of a car or tied to the back of a bike.

I'm not complaining mind you --  but does everyone read the Missouri boards?
I guess we should be flattered.

Thanks Coop.  I told her to be careful if she test-drove your new seedmobile.  It was nice to hear you on her show Monday.

You forgot four-wheel drive vehicles, big-ass knives, gas-powered welders, tractors, bulldozers, jackhammers nail guns and chainsaws.

Awesome bike, Joe. Hopefully my vegetables sell and I'll be able to join you soon. I will compensate you for use of your tools and knowledge.

I'm not out to cause a trouble, but part of me really wants to haul ass down Interstate 44 on a motorcycle with an M14 slung across my back.  :~

DryFire

Made a wet and cold ride today to the brother-in-laws shop to have some aluminum welded. Here is my solution to mounting a rifle on the KLR. Pretty simple really, used the left passenger peg mount for a lower point, and then used the two rear most mounting screws in the rear rack to hold the top end. If you see the pics you can see what I ended up. I simply used square tubing and then a section of L. The case is a Plano airglide, this thing will hold almost any rifle you can come up with scope or not, evil black rifle or even my 91/30.

Thanks,
