Another picture perfect Wisconsin Winterseed got underway Sat, March 5th.

Cold, icy and with just enough of a north wind to challenge all!  >:D

Two Marine Corps "poolees," recruits that have not yet been assigned to boot camp, accepted invitations to fire an instructors AR's with ammunition donated in honor of their commitment to serve our Nation.  "Hoo-rah!," gentlemen!  O0

Two dedicated young shooters traveled down from Eau Claire for instruction and to gain experience.  More details to follow, but here are some early photos:

Sunday:
Another marvelous day of Wisconsin winter Appleseeding!  Three new Riflemen and two new Orange hats accepted!! Three Marine "poolies" sending donated rounds downrange with AR's volunteered in honor of their pledge of service to our Nation...  The sound of the defense of Liberty cracking and echoing down a valley being held in stewardship for America by the members of the La Crosse Rifle & Gun Club...

I would like to point out that Cooper generously donated piles of .223 ammo for the young Marine Corps poolees to shoot at Appleseed La Crosse this weekend; she also brought three of her AR-15s for them to shoot.  Definitely above and beyond the call.  Thanks, Cooper!

Two of the young men are talking of getting their own AR-15s now, one is already planning on coming to the April 16 and 17 Appleseed at the La Crosse Rifle Club.  This Appleseed was a very positive experience for all of these young men thanks to the outstanding instructors conducting the Appleseed: Martin, Cooper, and BuzzG.

What a great weekend!  Martin, Buzz G, Cooper, and later vmt were a great instructor team!  Although chilly, it was definitely a fun weekend that involved burning hundreds (if not thousands) of rounds up.  It was great burning up all that ammo...productively, of course.

Again, thanks to the great team that ran this event.

Oh, and cannot forget the great stories being heard again.  Each time, you pick out something and store it away in your memory that for some reason you did not catch before...I enjoyed that flintlock and bayonet that Cooper used for the First Strike.

Yes, AuntieBellum, both me and my father (professor gun) took an orange hat today...I'm excited and looking forward to the work I have to do on this path, even though there will be lots of it I'm sure.  :) :)

We will see if we can get the Marine Corps poolees who were present to join the forum.  One of them is my younger son, BrowningMan, who is already on this forum; he (along with his mother and I) signed the dotted line allowing him to become one of the Devil Dogs.  Our local Marine Corps recruiter has weekly workouts for a group of poolees and Appleseed was brought up at the poolee workout a little over a week before the March 5,6 Appleseed.  A number of the young men present expressed interest; three of them attended.  I think if they had more advance notice more could have been present.  Also, most of these young men are 17 years of age and do not have a rifle yet.

I am hoping that as word spreads among the poolees and the Marine Sergeants about the value of Appleseed and the fun to be had that we will see more poolees attending.  I am going to approach the membership of the La Crosse Rifle Club to ask if they would be willing to fund ammunition for the use of the poolees at Appleseed.  I am sure that between instructors, instructors in training, and La Crosse Rifle Club members we can come up with enough LTR's and/or AR-15s.  Our membership is very supportive of Appleseed, particularly for training junior shooters, and they are very supportive of military use of our range.  I am hoping this will translate to purchasing .223 ammo and .22LR ammo for use of these fine young men who are willing to put themselves at risk to defend our Nation.

Thank you very much to everyone at our event last weekend.  Glad to be in your company, it was great and I learned a lot.
AppleseedSpecial Thanks to the excellent instructors and to LaCrosse Rifle Club for use of their resources, expertise, knowledge and time.  Congratulations to the Rifleman and those starting the journey.

My first Appleseed and an experience that should not be missed. I particularly enjoyed the rapid fire AQT's and achieved my best scores during this part of the exercise.

I am looking furiously for a used 10/22 for my wife (scheduled for Appleseed in April).  Mods necessary incl. youth stock (but will have to stick with a stock brl).  If anybody sees anything please let me know.  I will not be able to make it to LaCrosse show this weekend.

Looking forward to seeing you again SOON
Pete

Hey Pete,
Glad you enjoyed the Appleseed at the La Crosse Rifle Club.  I am kind of biased but I think it is the best range in the State  :).  The membership has been very supportive not only of Appleseed but also our hunter safety education classes and our women's pistol classes; this is a great group of people.

Wiebke Fur Co in La Crosse often has used Ruger 10/22's at reasonable prices, if you are in La Crosse a visit with them might be fruitful.  A few days ago I happened upon a stainless steel 10/22 with composite stock that I just couldn't pass up at the price they had on it.  I am now getting that ready for my wife to use.  She has used a Ruger 10/22 with a wood stock and seemed to have some problems with stock fit on that one, but this composite stock seems to fit her better.  I cannot find significant differences in dimensions of the two stocks so maybe it is just the shape (which is a bit different) or the weight (which is a lot less compared to the wood).  So far I have fitted it with a scope, sling swivels and studs, and a sling.  Still need to add a good bolt release and an extended magazine release.

We have Appleseeds scheduled for April 16 and 17 as well as June 25 and 26; hope you can make it to those.
