"Unhappy it is, though, to reflect that a brother's sword has been sheathed in a brother's breast and that the once-happy and peaceful plains of America are either to be drenched with blood or inhabited by a race of slaves.  Sad alternative!  But can a virtuous man hesitate in his choice?" - George Washington - from a letter to a close friend after the events of April 19, 1775

"There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our (the United States) overthrow.  Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter.  From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger.  I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing." - Daniel Webster, June 1, 1837

I've been saying for a while now that a squad of 3-6 competent shooters, armed with sighted 10/22s and a stack of hi-cap mags, can pretty much OWN anything/everything they can see for a city block in every direction. Maybe two blocks.

I think I'm guilty of underestimating the "power" of the .22 rimfire.

Iron at 500 - AQT Targets

In pistols, not LTRs, the OSS, CIA and the Mafia have used the .22 LR for many years to quietly and quickly take out their targets at close range.

And while it may penetrate pretty well on a turkey (birds have hollow brittle bones that shatter more easily than mammal bones) keep in mind that on larger bones it will often "bounce" off, or richochet, at a different path (which can make it more damaging if the bone it bounces off of sends it back through the area containing vital organs).

Don't forget the reports from RBC#2 at Ramseur, Feb. 2007 where a .22 was used to knockdown popups at 200 yds. fairly easy and I think they even got one or two at 300 yds.  I know Ken was getting shots on the D targets at 300 yds. during the full distance AQT.

"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

I used to hunt rabbits alot when I lived in NV and 100 yard kills where easy with a .22 and the bullets went right thure the rabbits.

Yep the humble .22 is more then most ppl think , but I think it is that way with most rifles   ppl think they will do more then they can or think they will do less then they can .

As told to me  "you can would with a .50 bmg  or kill with a .22   shot placement shot placement"

I don't yet have any first hand experience with it, but I would think that the 60gr loading by Aguila would be the first choice for this extreme range work. I know that some of the "heavy" 22LR loadings, such as the Winchester Silhouette 45 gr., show much better performance at range.

Anybody have any experience with those?  I would think that longer (60-grain) bullet might not stabilize well in a one-turn in 16" barrel.

Buckshot

I have not been shooting it, but guys at our club shoot a Mini-Palma.

.22s at 200 yards.

They report the best accuracy with the same ammo that the smallbore shooters use at normal .22 (50 & 100 yd.) ranges, standard velocity target loads.

They don't have to drop down through the transonic layer like the high speed rounds do.

They report the heavier bullets not stabilizing properly in most rifles.

I will keep gathering data when they get back to it this year.

I've played with them quite a and they are garbage.  They dont stabalize in any barrlel very well including the TacSol that was built with them in mind.  Good concept, pisspoor execution.  It need a slightly longer case and slightly less bullet.  Unfortunately that would have ment tooling up for new brass instead of using existing 22 sgort casings/man. equipment.

Long story short if you see them on the shelf at the local gunstore leave them there.  Spend you money on more conventional ammo.

You dont have to take my word on this BTW.  Run a search on rimfire central to verify.

Well, all the poachers that I know of use the .22 lr for deer. They either shoot them in the head,or in the lungs. Dead deer....I'm not saying poaching is a good thing...people do it though. #)

I can qualify this through personal experience...99% of all deer that I ever killed was with .22 LR--on my own property or friends--and most kills were at 100 yds., +/-. I killed a couple with a .22 magnum too. I originally had to do this out of necessity, because I never had the money for the bigger toys and ammo.

And shot placement is critical as DB stated...
QuoteThey either shoot them in the head,or in the lungs.

Bottom line...I'm a believer, and many folks underestimate how lethal a .22 can be in the right hands.  <:)

I have purpose built several rifles for the Aguila SSS. It can be made to perform very well using the right gun.
The TacSol is neither "tactical" nor is it a solution, it's joke.
Build a proper rifle for it adn it's a winner.

Growing up as part of a family that had little respect for the law and even less money, poaching was one way to put meat on the table. Most rounds will take down most any game they were after but the 22lr was the round of choice to make sure you could get the meat back home without getting caught. So there was lots of rabbit, coon, opossum (yech) and deer (everybody's favorite) while I was growing up. And while the law was not a big influence on my uncles, leaving an animal to suffer was absolutely unacceptable, and the 22 never let them down. Of course it helped that they had all worked for the local tallow plant culling old farm animals and had plenty of experience taking down all sorts of hoofed animals by headshots using a 22, so they knew where to place the bullet for a single shot kill.
