Hello Everyone,

Hope all had a nice Christmas season and everyone is well.  I've been out of the loop for awhile but need to get things back together.

Anyway, I want to bring my 13 year old son to the Feb shoot at Myakka and let him receive the excellent training from all you nice folks as he seems very eager to learn.  Plus, it's better to have someone else show him some things rather than just dad.

So my question is this:  I want to help him his 1st day and assist him with loading his magazines and whatever help he might need so I won't be shooting at all the first day.  He is going to have my 10/22 and using the whole weekend.  Now, if I want to shoot the 2nd day for a rifleman score, can I use my Marlin 60 (tube fed version of the 795) ?  I was thinking to simulate a magazine change could I just lay the rifle down for something like 3 seconds to simulate a magazine change ?

What do you all think ?

Ignorance may be bliss, but it's not a virtue.

We've had folks use the tube fed Marlin 60.  Dont worry about the mag change bit, its got its own complications already!

Odds are theyll be an instructer or two with a loaner rifle, either a 10/22 or marlin that would be happy to lend it out for the day, especialy if you let em know a little ahead of the event.  If I happy to be working that one, I'd be glad to let you use my Marlin 795.

Darts suggestion is also a very good one.

Yep, just load 11 or 12 and eject one/two..Or borrow a loaner.

As for your son, take him out ahead of time so he knows how the rifle works. Personally, IMO, family "coaching" and or "helping" is asking for trouble. Unless he's got some special issues, you need to be several shooting positions away. Splitting up families on the line in general is a good idea. You'll tell him one thing, an instructor will come by and tell him another. This is not AS policy but I've seen too many unnecessary problems doing otherwise......O.L.

Wise words indeed ,,outside of Appleseed shoots I shoot alot with my grandson , but at Appleseed shoots I find it better to let other Instructors do the coaching with him it seems to just work better that way.

No, I already told him that I'm just going to sit in my chair and just be there in case he has a problem with a malfunction or something with the magazines or something like that.  He knows to listen to the instructors and treat their words like they were spoken by the Almighty himself.

He's already been shooting with me a few times for bench rest shooting so he knows how the Ruger works and the basics on sight alignment and that sort of thing but I haven't done anything with him on prone shooting and cheek welds and all that sort of thing.  That's why I figured it would be better for him to get it from you guys without my interference or my input.

I'll take him out a weekend or two before the shoot to get his sights lined up the best we can but then he's on his own with you guys

Thanks for the suggestion for the Marlin 60 to all who responded.  I believe I'll give that a go on the 2nd day and try for my rifleman score.

Sorry guys, I didn't notice this was a "Florida" forum. I shouldn't have posted...O.L.

 With all due respect Sir,
You should be receiving as much as your son. I think you will both do fine. Just jump in with both feet. Allow yourself the same oppourtunity as your son and you will both have a better experience. I have been with my wife my daughyter, and several friends. Friends o.k. Family split 'em up! It works. Trust in the program. This is a suggestion from someone who knows what your getting into but, Take it for what its worth and whatever you decide I'm sure we in the program will work with you to get the safest, best instruction, and lead you and your son to the way of the "RIFLEMAN"! Good Luck hope to see you and your son on the trail. I'll be blazing saddles, in Florida this year!
