Rocket Man

This weekend we threw a shiny new Appleseed, the first one ever at the Oak Tree Gun Club, a legendary shooting park in the hills north of Los Angeles.  Their main customers there are shotgunners, and they have a wicked sporting clays course, but there's always room for a little rifle marksmanship too.  It's a neat place to visit.  Brian, our liaison to the club, took great care of us.

We had a small group this time, with only four students total over the weekend and all returning Appleseeders, but what they lacked in numbers they made up with terrific shooting.  I trust you all remember the story of Hezekiah somebody-or-other, yes?  Numbers are no match for skill, judiciously applied, with the heart of a Rifleman behind it.   :---

V stood in to shootboss, joined by myself and new IIT L0ck3, giving us a terrific instructor-to-student ratio.  So... there were going to be no excuses.   ???  Time would tell.

Since everyone was familiar with the way we do things, knew our safety rules and the Six Steps and could even recite them on cue  ;) we ran the first day more like a typical Sunday Appleseed -- it took no time at all to breeze through all of the instruction, and we even snuck in an AQT before lunch.  Sunday moved along just as well.

During our lunch breaks we mixed up the history a little bit, since everyone was well familiar with the Three Strikes.  So we went into a more detailed discussion of the grievances of the Colonies, the personal life histories and motivations of figures like General Gage and Luther Blanchard, and what it really meant back then (and today!) to be an American.

So how'd our students do?  How does two new Riflemen and two new IIT's sound?   ^:)^  We saw great AQT's from everbody -- Chris (repeating Rifleman) beat all with a 228 or so, George nailed a 223, Steve a 215, and Kevork was right on their heels with a best 204, close enough to taste it.  George and Steve also stepped forward and into shiny new Orange Hats.  The way things are growing out here, there'll be plenty of chances to meet them on the Trail.

I always leave an Appleseed with one question -- "when's the next one?"  Hopefully this is the first of many here.  Bring your friends.

Want proof?  How about some pictures?

The line on Saturday morning.  Our cute little bay was transformed into the crucible of instruction.   ++)

A little instruction goes a long way.  Five consecutive groups, starting at the center, top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right.  Good students means steady progress.

Half the folks we talked to thought it would be 100 degrees and were worried about brush fires.  The other half thought it was going to rain and turn the roads to muck.  As it happened, Nature couldn't make up her mind and gave us the gift of a beautiful weekend, complete with crazy skywriting.

What's this?  Someone in a red sweatshirt joined our line on Saturday?  Why no, that's our shoot boss, getting in a quick AQT to stay sharp.

The tired but happy group on Saturday evening, joined by our new Orange Hat, at right.

"I see fields of green..."  There's quite a lot of shotgunning going on at Oak Tree.   :o

We moved to a different line on Sunday, but got right to business.

And our other new Rifleman (and IIT), Steve.  Persistence pays.

See you all at the next one!

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

He certainly did persist.  Let me tell you a little story about that...

Early on Sunday, I think it was the second AQT, Judge Crater put together some pretty nice groups.  We did a quick "30 Cal Rule" estimate and came up with a 211.  He was pleased as punch.

I went and got a .30 cal round and looked at it carefully...

... and on review, it was my sad duty to inform him it was actually a 205.

I hated to do it, but fair is fair.  What a kick in the guts, though.

So he went back to work and came up with a 215.   :---

No doubt about this one, either.  He'll back me up when I say I don't give points away for free.  His patch is well earned indeed.

No "gimmies" offered, nor accepted.
See you soon.
