Gibsonburg experience

Hello all. New user here.

I loved to shoot my dad's rifles when I was a kid. I would shoot flies with his Daisy BB gun in the garage at about 7 yards using "Kentucky windage" as I learned how the BB's flew versus where the sites aimed. He gave me a Glenfield .22 somewhere around 13 years old. I acquired a few more .22 rifles over the years. Unfortunately I can count the number of times I've been shooting any rifle in the past 20 years on one finger. :-[

Attending a Tea Party on July 4th in Perrysburg, I heard about the Appleseed Project and grabbed a flyer. I knew right away this was something I wanted to expose my kids to. Gibsonburg is about 40 miles from home so was an acceptable distance. July and August dates were not going to work out due to previous commitments, September looked good. I asked my boys, 15, 16 and 17 years old if they were interested and of course they were.

Unfortunately my 35+ year old rifles made the shooting even more challenging than all the great instructions we had, but we still learned a great deal. I have to thank Hoover and Bill for their generous offer and use their rifles when we started to have serious jamming problems.

I've never even seen a 500 yard range before, but I hit the target!  :D  I am certain I could never have accomplished this without the incredible instructions that was provided at this event. You guys rock!

Along with all the great shooting techniques came stories of important history of our country's freedom fighters. Thank you Posterboy and others for that.

We will all be attending more Appleseed events and you can be sure I will be bringing along friends.

Awsome Steve its good to hear your rediscovering shooting and getting the kids involved too.  My son has really enjoyed himself and learned alot at the shoots.  Thats cool that you had the opportunity to shoot at the 500 yd range.  So far my appleseeds have been limited to 25m.  If Gibsonburg makes that available I'm probalby going to need to make it to one of their shoots.

Thanks for the report Firestorm!

The Great Black Swamp is always a special place for Appleseed events. I recommend making the trip any time you can... it's well worth it.

G'Burg is also a great place to really get to know KD and hone your skills as a Rifleman. You'll be working with some of Ohio's most experienced KD instructors and it's very likely you'll have the opportunity to take that instruction from 25 to 500 in a single weekend.

Bring out the big boy rifles, it's time to shoot the Rifleman's Quarter Mile!

Firestorm (cool name by the way), thanks for the post! It's great to hear about the Tea Party activists getting involved in Appleseed. Our underlying motivations are very similar --- educate and motivate our fellow Americans to participate as free and responsible citizens in the republic which our forefathers created for us.

And hitting the 500 yard target --- "priceless".

Welcome aboard. Stay in touch and spread the word! And I look forward to seeing you again.

Thanks for all the kind words.

You hit the nail right on the head, so to speak, FuzzyMath. Hitting that 500 yard target was a great feeling of accomplishment having went through all the old rifle problems. I shot four different .22s through those two days as I was learning. Very challenging. Now I'm going to need to get a couple new rifles cuz the kids aren't going to let me go to another Appleseed without them.

Also my wife was there taking some pictures. I will post them once I get them downloaded from her camera.

Hey, Firestorm, when you're getting new rifles for the kids, don't forget the wife, too! She shoots free at Appleseeds, you know!

Your wife may end up having a ball, and shooting better than you boys!

(I'm secretly hoping to score Rifleman before my husband does.  ^-^ )
