M1 30 Carbine Sling?

This is more of a curiosity question...

Why did they design the M1 Carbine for a one inch sling? All the other shoulder arms in US service at the time had 1.25" sling swivels. One would think the Ordinance Department tenacity for sameness and economies of scale would have resulted in a 1.25" sling.

Because it was never intended to be a front line weapon. It was issued to troops that would have been issued a 1911A1. These troops rarely if ever saw combat. They were issued the M1 Carbine instead of the 1911A1 so as to put more 1911A1s in the hands of front line troops.

While a fun rifle to shoot, I would trust my 1911A1 to do the job at hand before I would the 30 Carbine.

I've got a couple carbine slings in case anyone shows up with 1" swivels on their rifle.  Works pretty good.  Not quite as ideal as having a standard web sling, but decent.

Is it possible to use the .30 carbine sling for a loop sling?  If it's attached to the .30 carbine like they originally intended, it can't be.  On other rifles, like .22's, can it be?

I've never figured out how to do it.

The end that attaches to the barrel band allows no adjustment. The end that goes around the oiler is adjustable, but a loop would be hard to come by and there would be no way to adjust tension.

If someone knows how, left us know. About all you can do is a Hasty at best.

It can be done, I have done it before.  I think I might have taken the buckle off of one of my big slings to make it work.  Ill have to experiment when I get home to remember how I did it exactly.

I did it on a 10/22, not an M1 carbine.  Not sure if it would be possible on one of those.

The only way I've been able to do it is to remove the oiler, make a big loop there, and run your arm through in the oiler's place.  Tension is adjusted by placement of the buckle only, and it's nigh impossible to keep the buckle on the outside of your arm.

Then again, you don't want it too tight anyway or else it'll cause canting, since the front swivel is on the left side.

I never bother and Hasty is good enough, IMO.
