Presented AS to Boy Scouts

Presented AS to my district roundtable meeting last night. Waited till the break out session and presented it only to the Boy Scout side, not the Cubs. Put one of the dated fliers with locations into the hands of every unit leader in the room. I had about 5 come over after the meeting and pick up the additional articles and bifold cards you provided me with Hoover    I would imagine there will be some participation generated from last nights meeting. I also have two other units that were not in attendance who I KNOW will be interested.

Ground will break for the new range facility at our local campin August...a distinct possibility we could start some of our boys on their AS trail right at their local camp this Fall, if we could make that work. I think I will start a new thread to discuss some possibilities there...

Had another unit leader stop out and pick up a few sets of the promo literature last night. Our two troops are planning a Shotgun merit badge (and NRA marksmanship qualification) clinic for our boys this Fall, and getting it funded through an ODNR "Step Outside" grant. Plan on making that an annual thing. I'm pretty sure his unit will show up at an AS event some time in the near future!

They will break ground on the "new and improved" shooting range at our camp in August right after Summer Camp is over. I put a grant request through our FONRA committee for some shooting equipment, and will do so again this Fall. Our second FONRA banquet did much better, and has resulted in over 3 times the funds for disbursement at the next grant allocation meeting. Our first grant will provide layered archery targets, and an auto clay pigeon thrower with a 90 bird tower on it, along with some other things. This years grant will help fund whatever is needed to "put the icing on the cake" so to speak with the new range facility.

My hopes are to make our camp well known within the scouting community as the "place to go for shooting sports". Hopefully, there would be a possibility of incorporating an AS type event out there at some point.

On another note, for what is likely our last "post event" (after the banquet) raffle to generate funds for my next grant allocation, I suggested we raffle one of the special engraved Henry Goldenboy 100yrs of Scouting commemorative rifles. This year is the 100th anniversary of Scouting, and this rifle is limited production and will never be made again. Wish us luck, if we can sell all the tickets, it will almost double our available funds.

How are you getting around the "Guide to Safe Scouting" requirements for single-shot rifles?  My understanding is that Venturing crews can shoot anything (under certain conditions), but Scouts are limited to single shot or bolt guns with a magazine block.

My better half and I have been working to get more youth programs at our club, too, so we'll be following your progress with great interest.

I contacted the Boy Scouts in this area last year for the AS at Gardnerville, Nevada. Never heard back from 'em. They may be boys but they ain't Scouts in my book. I have to assume the political correctness germ has infected the bunch.

It was my understanding that the BS insurance does not cover this type of event, and would in fact put them in danger of possible litigation if they come as a Scouting group. It is cool if the parents of each scout come as a family. I would pm EagleScouter about the legalities.

As a former Pack Committe Chair, it would NOT be a sanctioned scouting event.  In fact, I would wait until the scout meeting was officially over before I presented the material.

Requiring the parents to come as escorts is a 2-fer.

It gets everybody around those sticky rules and the parents get to hear the message.

The pertinent portion of the above comment would be "type" event, even if it's just a teaser to get them interested in attending a full on AS. Though something like an Appleseed event could no be coordinated as a "District Camporee" and promoted as such...the range is for rent to units or individuals in the off season. Once the range is secured for use by a group (County Sherriff trains there often) rules change for that group since they are not Scouts. There are possibilities there...

However, my main thoughts were geared toward more of an introductory type thing that would give the boys a taste of AS and leave them wanting more. Once the rifle merit badge is earned, your done. There is really no incentive to practice, or gain any additional skill with a rifle. So a couple of us  have started offering the boys of our units the opportunity to work on the Marksmanship Qualification program rockers when we do the merit badge. Boys that have already earned their merit badge are then motivated to come out the next time we have a weekend range session for new guys to earn their badge...because they want to earn the next few rockers (scouts love patches).

A 4-6 hr AS type teaser would be something great to include on a Sunday after a Fri-Sat completing the merit badge...regardless of what type rifles were used. 

Again...just a thought, I don't know what specifically we would do on that. At least we are talking about it...maybe something will come of it!

I was at a Cub Scout campout this weekend and spoke to Webelos dads on the side about the program.   Some were very interested.  We'll see what happens.

If you want to try doing something like Appleseed within the rules, I have right here photographic evidence that AS can work with a single-shot rifle: link.  Amanda shot very well on those cold and rainy days last December and was only ever a shot or two behind me with my 5-shot bolt action, and I was only ever a shot or two shy of completeing the rapid fire stages.  She was obvious evidence that it's the shooter, not the gun that makes the biggest difference.

In any case it's worth a try.

I had several boy scouts on the line with their parents this weekend at Crittenden, KY. they all came out but it was not an official BS function but a group of families that happen to be scouts out enjoying an Appleseed.

Darn!  I was hoping there was a loophole.  What kind of ratio are you getting as far as Scouts going through the MB program to Scouts who show up for an "Appleseed-type" event, Para?

Have no stats for that as of yet EZ3...MY first AS is this weekend in Athens. This is a new path for my 2A trail!!
