Need some advice...

I'm planning on attending one of the Kentucky shoots in April.  May have my wife join me.

I have a Marlin 795 (magazine fed & tech sites) and a Marlin 981t (tube fed, bolt, scope).  If my wife comes I'll have her using the 795.

Is it reasonable for me to shoot the 981t on the line?

Welcome Kentuckian! Yes it is possible for you to use the 981t on the line with good results. The tube fed part is not an issue at all as you can make a speed loader from a Mcdonalds soft drink straw. The reloads are not an issue either as the tube fed shooters will receive some special instructions to simulate a reload. Now the bolt action can be an issue for some due to breaking your position to operate the bolt. This can and has been overcome by several shooters even first timers. But it does take a lot of persistence and concentration. Both of your Marlins are great shooters and are more than adequate as far as accuracy goes.
The important thing to remember is that at Appleseed we teach the skills needed, not the equipment so no matter what your rifle of choice you will leave a better marksman with whatever rifle you pick up that weekend or in the future. Most of our instructors do carry loaner rifles as I do and we freely loan them out. Because sometimes rifles do go down for whatever reason and sometimes people bring a less than optimum rifle and a simple rifle change can make a difference.
One note on the scoped Marlins be sure to put a dab of loctite on or peen the dovetail where the scope mounts. I have seen a few scopes slide forward on the dovetail.

Looking forward to having you and your wife on the line in Kentucky soon.  Any other questions just ask.

Mudcat,

Thank you for the confirmation on the 981t being no problem.  I recognize the challenges of the bolt action relative to the course.  I'm up for the challenge.  O0

I'm glad to know that the instructors can accomodate the tube magazine.  I am familiar with the "soda straw speed loader" trick.  I will have something suitable and have practiced with it by the time of the shoot.

Kentuckian be sure to rattle the doors on the gun safes of your family and friends. Get them to bring the rifles out for a weekend of heritage and marksmanship. Appleseed is a great family event, young and old everyone will have a good time and learn something. So bring a car load when you come.

I'll post some flyers about the Kentucky Appleseeds at the two rifle ranges where I shoot.  I know there are folks who are interested.
