My current project is developing a variant of the old Garand M2 aiming device that will fit a 10/22 model Tech-sight - for all those instructors who have wanted to see what the shooter is seeing...

Just take my money now!  Please keep us posted on this...it would be amazingly helpful.

And welcome back!

I'm bumping this since I'm back in the program, under my real name.

I can't edit the original post, since different account, but here's an update on status of the various projects mentioned, and I'll get a new thread going with full updates soon.

Thanks all for the welcome back!

I'm still plugging away on the updated 'aiming device' - and somewhat scratching my head.  A friction fit on the Tech-sight did not work, just doesn't provide enough purchase points to fasten securely.  Looked good to start, but as my wife proved, shoot a ten shot string and it comes adrift both vertically and horizontally.  Back to the drawing board...   :wb:

Magnetic is probably the next step, though the Tech-sight body is actually cast aluminum, unlike the original M1/M1A sights that are good old fashioned steel.  The only magnetic bits on a Tech-sight are the adjusting screws, which don't offer much of a mount point, but we'll see what super magnets can do.  Or maybe a different kind of sight...

TimOren

After three tries, I now have a functioning (though not yet manufacturable) prototype of the 'Tech-Sight aiming device':

Shown on a dismounted rear sight used for testing, but the wife ran ten cadenced shots through a 10/22 with it mounted last night and it stayed firmly in place, so that's progress.  As you can see from the first image, the rear sight is clearly visible, and I had no trouble picking up the front sight.  I could easily see breathing pattern, muzzle flip after firing, and return to the NPOA position.  Would work really well with dry firing or a ball&dummy drill.  Less directly useful for determining proper sight alignment, since you can't actually see the shooter's eye position.  OTOH, the device creates a 'tunnel vision' for the shooter that makes it very hard to not notice that aperture (sometimes a problem with kids).

On the down side, the attachments consist of two super magnets and a piece of spring steel that are just hanging out in the wind right now, not a good idea for something to keep in the range bag.  And it's still not quite square on to the sight body, which you can see in the second photo.  So at least a couple more prototypes to go to fix those up and make it easier to build.

I also realized (duh!) that there will have to be a separate version for lefty shooters, since it's difficult to see through their heads...   :slap:

Not needed for lefty shooters: we're just that good.  ;)

Seriously, this is really cool. Now for a camera and wireless transmitter, and an instructor can monitor the entire line from a computer…

I just ordered a trigger.  I don't need it to reset because the student needs to feel the reset of their rifle.
Ignorance may be bliss, but it's not a virtue.

For those who use Remington 700 stocks for their demo rifles, I'm working on a practice trigger version for those.  Non-trivial mod, so it'll be at least a few weeks.

Thanks, Tim.  As of this moment, Rem 700 stocks are easier to snatch up than 10/22 stocks (think CDNN Sports), so this will be very helpful.  Appreciate you taking the time to work on this, sir.

I now have a working version of the R700 demo trigger.  Still needs some production optimization, but that's best done as part of the initial run.  So questions:

Who and how many are interested?  I will sell the first batch here at a discount from eBay since I don't have to pay their fees to sell direct.  I still have to run some numbers but I'll probably be selling them at about $32 direct, shipping included.

What color?  You can have anything as long as it's off-white or black.   ;D  I'll eventually settle on one color for production to simplify stocking.

What kind of stock are you putting it in?  Remington made or after market?

I am asking the last because I don't have personal experience with variation of inlets for nominally R700 stocks.  When I did the 10/22 trigger I had long experience with those, and M14s are of course milspec.  I built this on a Remington original long action take-off stock.  It occupies the trigger inlet, part of the floor plate area, and has a retaining clip that reaches into the near end of the action/magazine area, so it ought to be safe, so long as non-Remington stocks are conforming to the Remington trigger inlet pattern, which is NOT simple.  (Though speaking as someone who messes with modeling tools and plastics, it is nicely designed to firmly retain the trigger while following build rules for molding.)

Post up here and I'll contact directly.

Now listed on eBay, see next message.

Demo / practice trigger for Remington 700 stocks is now completed and selling on eBay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/144138195194

Making this one in black, at least for now, since it looks spiffy with take-off Remington polymer stocks.  This was built and tested on a long action R700 stock, but should be good with any Remington made stock and probably with aftermarkets, so long as they've adhered closely to the R700 inlet pattern.

Had to bump the cost on this a couple bucks, as it's a more complex build than the 10/22.

Tim,

Thanks again for doing this.  Ordered one this morning; if it works like it supposed to, I'll definitely order more.

Let me know if any suggestions after you use it a while.  If you decide to get more, contact me here and I can give you a discount from eBay price.

Thanks to Meadow, I now know that the demo triggers I make for the M14/M1A stocks will also work with an M1 Garand take-off stock.  These are still special items at least for now.

I've got a few of your barrel bands.  I need a trigger group!
