Well, another great Appleseed is in the books at Dillon Sportsman Center near Newark, Ohio. We had 14 shooters arrive ready to work on their skills.  This included a nice mix of new folks and returning shooters including many of my favorite prior attendees.

We started the weekend with a welcome, introduction to the goals of RWVA and Project Appleseed, and our normal safety briefing.  This was followed by bringing rifles to the line and we started the event with the Sat morning Red Coat.
Results were pretty good.  We had 9 of 14 shooters put three rounds in the 100 yd target, 7 @ 200, 5 @ 300, 4 @ 400, 4 joined Daniel Morgan and we had 2 cleared Red Coats, congrats to Scott (not his first cleared Red Coat by any means) and Mark.

We moved to the points of instruction (POI).  The steady hold factors in prone were presented followed by the six steps and NPOA.  Related drills were shot after each POI and we then shot sighting groups in anticipation of IMC.  IMC was presented and we broke for lunch.

At lunch HikerMatt gave us a great  First Strike and we returned to the line for sight adjustments and confirmation groups.  We moved on to the steady hold in seated with related drills.

As the time monkey was working against us, we pressed on to the steady hold factors in seated and standing were presented with related drills.  A practice AQT was shot followed by the Saturday afternoon Red Coat.  Progress was shown.

We had 10 of 14 at 100, 12 at 200, 8 @ 300, 6 @ 400, 8 joined Daniel Morgan and we 6 cleared Red Coats (most I have ever had at an event).  Congrats to Abe, Jenna, Mark, Scott, Mark, and Betsy.  Wow, what a bunch of shooters.

The Second Strike was presented by HikerMatt and the Third Strike was presented by Corvette at the end of the day with a following call to action. We closed out the day with advice on how to prep for Sunday.

Sunday dawned rainy and with an uncertain forecast for the day.  We had set up pop canopies on the line to keep matts dry and to keep shooters out of the rain as best as we could. The morning Red Coat showed more progress.  We had 9 of 11 shooters at 100, 7 at 200, 5 at 300, 4 at 400, and 3 joined Daniel Morgan.  Scott cleared another Red Coat (another of many for Scott).

We followed the Red Coat with an NPOA drill and then moved on to the AQT grind.

We shot three AQT's on Sunday morning.  The skills of the shooters showed up right from the start.  We broke for lunch and presented the KD lecture.  Back on the line in the afternoon we shot 2 more AQT's. The skills of the shooters were evident.
We had a total of 22 qualifying scores.  What a great group of shooters:

Melia (R):  221, 233, 213, 219, 225
Mark (R):  215, 222, 227, 218, 226, 238 (High score of the weekend)
Chewie 1776 (R):  231 (Instructor requal)
Abe (N):  211
Merrill (R):  226, 211, 219 (Instructor requal)
Dan (R): 226 (Instructor requal)
Camo Cowboy (R): 218 (Instructor requal)

The DOM's were presented throughout the afternoon and  we ended the day with the Sunday Red Coat.  We had added some shooters during the day as we had some instructors on the line. There were 15 shooters on the line for the Sunday afternoon Red Coat.  Results were outstanding.  We had 11 of 15 at 100, 11 at 200, 6 at 300, 6 at 400, 6 joined Daniel Morgan.

We officially closed the event with another call to action and a challenge for all to get involved in their communities.   My thanks to the shooters for having a safe event and my thanks to ChevyShooter, HikerMatt, Griffin, Chewie 1776, Black hand, Patriot12, Navyshooter and Camo Cowboy for helping with the event.   And, our thanks again to Dillon Sportsman Center for hosting our event.

This was a verv special shoot.  The majority of shooters on the line were either youth or ladies.  Huzzah!!!

There are so many great stories for this event.  Norah, 9 yrs old, shot from bags for the weekend which is not unusual for a shooter this young.  But, by Sunday, she showed maturity far beyond her age.  She would settle behind her rifle, execute the course of fire and then make her rifle safe like a pro without any coaching.  On Sunday, with no prompting from our instructors, she worked through the course of fire like a veteran shooter, missing nothing on making her rifle safe and starting on her path to Riflewoman.  And, she shot the Shingle on two of our Red Coats.  Huzzah!!!

And then there was Abe, another youth shooter, who struggled at first but by Sunday put it all together and shot the score.  Another Rifleman has been made.

The line was a family affair.  And, they all did such a great job, I can't even begin to say how proud I am of the work they did.  Home school youth rock.  To my instructors, let's get the pics posted so all can enjoy what was a very special weekend.

Can't thank Corvette and the Instructors for all the time and instruction and learning - and FUN - they poured into everyone! Well done to all the "kiddos" out there doing what so many can't. Super proud of ya'll! Can't wait for our next event(s)! Huzzah!

New friends,

Two of our young shooters met for the first time at our event and became friends by the end of the weekend.  This pic is of them listening to a DOM.

Had a great time at my second Appleseed! Felt all the points of instruction truly come together during the last aqt and fell just short of 210, can't wait for next time!
Our task is to deal with the dust, but not to burn down the house in order to remove it.

Riflemen persist. Keep working on the skills that you learned at hope that you are able to attend another event in the near future.

As usual, I had so much fun I couldn't hardly stand it. I thank all who attended for teaching me something.  I can't do anything about the arrows I have shot and I will take the opportunity to focus on the arrows still in my quiver! It was most gratifying to see women and children involved in learning our heritage and use of the rifle. My sun is setting and thank golly for orange hats, red hats and Corvette, who are building the foundation for the rest of this and the next century.

ScottyOH,

Thank you so much for joining us and for your kind comments.  You are one of our special Appleseeders in Ohio and you will get that Distinguished rocker soon.  Riflemen persist and you certainly have.  See you soon on the line.
