What a great day today was in Piru, CA. The one year Birthday of the DAR!!

We had 38 people come out for a dose of Heritage along with some Instruction on Rifle Marksmanship.

The Nationwide Liberty Volley went off on schedule at 1300 PDT. We had a slightly ragged volley at first, as a couple of people fired off more than one round per name. Then people got the idea and it went very well. One young girl said, "It felt like we had a shot heard round the nation. It felt really good to be a part of it." Thank You colycat for the COF.

More tomorrow.

Old Glory!

38!  Sounds like your volley went as LODI, WI did.  What an honor to be a part of the nationwide volley.  It brought tears to my eyes.
"My primary objective is to change hearts and minds, for that is where the gaping hole in the hull of the USS America lies. I am looking to make a spark and praying that it will ignite, by their own will, into a bonfire in their hearts and souls."  PHenry

"Folks, this Appleseed thing doesn't work if we get a patch and go home. It doesn't work if we shoot a Rifleman score and remember the good times we had out on the range. It only works if we take that 7th Step and spread the 'seed. HUZZAH!!!"  Slim

April 18-19, 2009  "The seeds of rifle marksmanship were sown in good ground.  In the end, then, every attendee walked away as an instructor for their friends, family, coworkers.  May you tend your patch in Liberty's garden well and through a long life."  Francis Marion

webdancer

It was inspiring to see the almost-40 shooters sardined onto the line at the CA DAR in Piru on Patriot's Day. Many of the attendees were folks we'd met at AS gun show booths and it was super to see them again and to meet the spouses, children, and friends they brought with them to experience the magic of Appleseed.

Shoot Boss SavageShootr and her capable lieutenants Cal 7.62, LavaTech, and ASMinuteman, were busier than the proverbial "one-legged man", managing to run a safe, orderly line whilst keeping the attendees enthusiastic and focused on drinking from the "fire hose". Savage's granddaughter, Alyshia, did the cause proud by running the registration desk, modeling shooting positions, and helping to coach shooters on the line. This hard-working young lady is growing up into an orange hat.

In spite of temperatures in the 80s, we had three gentlemen (including ASMinuteman) smartly turned-out in period garb. They lent a wonderful visual presence to the event--especially during the history told so excitingly and movingly by LavaTech and Cal 7.62.

Impressively done Team Piru, you are made of win!  O0

In spite of temperatures in the 80s, we had three gentlemen (including ASMinuteman) smartly turned-out in period garb. They lent a wonderful visual presence to the event--especially during the history told so excitingly and movingly by LavaTech and Cal 7.62., along with Webdancer doing a rousing job of the Second Strike of the match. Thank You all for that.

I finally am with paperwork and numbers.

We had 38 Liberty minded people attend on Saturday, 18 of them returning, of the 23 who had intended to, on Sunday.

Saturday was hot, windy, and there was so much dirt blowing that we had some equipment problems. We had to remove most of the shade before it removed itself.

Most of us already had all the LTR's we had brought loaned out. As soon as something came available we reloaned it to others who had given up on their rifle, but who were content to watch their family and friends (old and new) continue with the strings. All the while paying attention to the Instruction.

We had 4 Liberty minded people come out for Sunday only. Three of them had been to Appleseed previously. For the weekend, our grand total attendees is 42.

Sunday, again, was hot, windy, and dirty. Everyone had cleaned their rifles and were ready to go. We had a total of 22 people on the line on Sunday. We managed to tie down the e-z ups with some rope that a Gentleman had in his truck. Thank You Steve.

At lunchtime we had great stories of Dangerous Old Men, as told by LavaTech, ASminuteman, and Cal 7.62. Stories of a Brave Young Lady, as told by Alyshia, and stories of General Morgans men and the Battle of Cowpens, as told by a couple of the Revolutionary War reenactors, Sespe and his friend, Joe. They then held a Q&A. Thank You all.

The timeline interjections during the day on Sunday was incredible. Cake, at lunch, to celebrate the Anniversary/Birthday of Californias first DAR, at Piru, was a nice treat.

We had three Riflemen shoot the score on Sunday. CONGRATULATIONS to all of you! None of them stepped up to take the Orange Hat, yet, but maybe they are going to think about it.

Sespe (one of the Reenactors) scored his RM score even though I had to take 25 points away from his first stage target. He had 15 shots on it. Even after taking away what were but a few of his fives (such a nice group) he still scored 212!!  O0 Congratulations!

One of the other two RM was attending his first Appleseed. He received his dunking of North Bridge Water because of his score of 210. Congratulations!

Our other RM came for Sunday only, after having been to a previous AS at Piru. Congratulations!

It was my Honor and Privilege to be there on this monumental weekend. Thank You all for coming out. I am certain that all of you will persist. There were many more Riflemen among the attending Liberty minded people. The scores simply do not reflect it, yet.

oh. well, here goes...

the internet said go to san martinez grande canyon rd and then up fire road and right right left and you're there. i got there and it was a private road two miles in, didnt make much sense. after my second trip up the road in futility i saw a white truck coming back behind me so of course flagged them down  to see if we were all lost (we were) and it was joe and his sons (shame joe had to leave early, i know he coulda made rifleman with that bolt gun) so we firgured if we were all lost in the same direction we couldnt be all wrong and maybe the gate was just not open yet, so we went up and park and just as we did, another car pulled up.

turned out to be dancer wearing her cook hat and all smiles about being on her way to the appleseed. and so we figured the 3 parties would wait till someone came to open the gate. so we waited and shortly thereafter a truck came up, not an appleseeder this time though, owner, manager worker of some sort, told us he knew the way but we had to go through piru but he would take us the back way since we were all there.

got to go on a great caravan through the hillside up the winding dirt roads to the top around pumping units and other equipment sheds. up to the top and back down the other side. once on the other side the man in the truck stopped and told us down the road to the left and we'd be right there. we of course thanked him for leading the way and proceeded down the hillside just west of the rwva range.

think that about does it....

Hey Moose, nice to "see" you again. BTW, thx for the help on the line.

Yep, that's the story... Except, after following our kind-hearted, oil company saviour through the mountain pass (that, in places, looked like a horse trail)--up, down, and around--for what seemed like a very loooong time, a tiny, evil voice spoke in my head: "Hey, this guy could be leading us into the hills to kill us and take our guns..."  Paranoid, who me?  :-[

FYI, I GoogleMaped the directions from LA to Piru. The route worked--sort of--but used a private-access road. Be careful when using internet mapping/directions. RifleWoman's directions, however, worked perfectly when I AS'd in Oct.

You know folks, not too terribly long ago, we built a "Cali only" map....showing -all- the current & past AS events, with links to the past events AAR's, & registration links & all that for the upcoming stuff.....
Right over here:
http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=3464.0

Since I tend to be "directionally challenged" myself, I like to show everybody where the front door is, & let them figure out how to get to where ever it is they are heading, by looking it over them selves.......

That way, they get an idea of what road is on the way, & all that......

a picture truly is worth a 1000 words...... <:)

kook, It was a pleasure meeting you and working with you. Nice rifle, by the way.

Aftermath. Thank You. You all are doing good things in the midwest too. I all started for you before Winona. Just like the boys of 1775. It started for them before April 19th.

Sespe sent me a PM and, after going home and discussing it with his wife, has decided to take on the Orange Hat!

Welcome to the CA Instructor Corps. I know you will find Instructing a very rewarding experience.

I'd like to Thank you for your dedication to the program. Sespe had already been doing the seventh step. He brought a friend last weekend. He has a couple of family members coming out next month.
