The OLD US Army pistol qualification was all fired from 25 meters and included standing, kneeling, crouching, and prone.

Quote from: Fulcrum on July 07, 2026, 12:19:28 PMThis is amazing to me. I've never heard of shooting pistols in prone, but it makes sense there are techniques for that. The main amazing thing is I've also never thought you could accurately shoot a pistol 100 yards!

My Contender 10" barrel in 22 K Hornet can whack a steel pig at 250 yards (caught it on video). Benchrest, of course.
My record is a 300 yard shot with that pistol, but the target was also 3' in diameter.

You want to see insanity, look up Jerry Miculek's 1000 yard shot with a 9mm revolver.

May as well just buy a Volquartsen to start with. It's modifiable. But you wouldn't want to. :D
While I don't think the VQ is necessary I do agree with this logic! My VQ LLV is an excellent pistol, very reliable and extremely accurate. Can't recommend it or the black mambas enough. They just run and run very well! I bought mine used with a vortex venom red dot for $800. It is my favorite pistol that I own.

Ruger 22/45 tactical, threaded short steel bull barrel.  Add a dot and a can and call it a day.
Last evening, it occurred to me that when a defender of Liberty is called home, their load lands upon the shoulders of the defenders left behind. Just as the Founders did their duty for Liberty, every subsequent generation must continue their work lest Liberty perish. As there is no way for the remaining adults to take on the work of those that die, we must pass the ideals and duties on to the children. -PHenery

I will say that the only 22 pistols that I own are all Rugers.

But, I have seen a lot of good things about the Taurus TX22. And, the larger magazine capacity they offer does have some appeal, especially for shooting an Appleseed.

Rimfire is well known for not always being the most reliable ammunition. Any time I am shooting an Appleseed stage, I like to have more rounds in the gun than what the stage requires, so that if I have a misfire, I can just cycle the bolt/slide and keep shooting, without having to do a magazine change before I'm done.

That is the downfall of the Ruger pistols and where something like the TX22 could be advantageous.

Stage 1 of the Pistoleer Qualification Test is shooting 10 rounds in 10 seconds. If your pistol only holds 10 rounds and you have a misfire, you are screwed. With something like a TX22, you could rack the slide and keep shooting and still have a pretty reasonable chance of scoring well.

Note: You CAN put a mag in a Ruger, load one round into the chamber, take that mag out, then put a full mag in, to have a total of 11 rounds in the gun, allowing for one misfire without having to do a mag change.

Disclaimer: I have not yet actually shot a PQT. I've just been studying up on it and waiting for a Pistolseed that I can get to. So, I am not POSITIVE that the Pistolseed protocol allows to load a round in the chamber and then swap to a full mag before the stage timer starts. I would expect that it would be allowed, but I don't know for SURE.

Regardless, with a Ruger that is reasonably clean and using good quality ammo, it should be totally fine. But, a TX22 does offer a very slight advantage (in my mind, anyway).

When I do finally get to a Pistolseed, my plan is to start with my Volquartsen Mamba X. If I earn a patch before the end of the 'seed, then I'll switch to one of my USPSA or GPA match 9mm's with a dot on it. If I qualify again and still have more time left in the 'seed, then I'll switch to one of my 9mm's with iron sights. From there, maybe one of my 45s with iron sights. Who knows... then maybe my 357 revolver with a couple of speed loaders?  ;D

That all seems overly ambitious, but I like to have plans in place for all contingencies... :D

Walther PPQ M2 5" in 22lr is amazing. It has the same feel as their 9mm but of course the 22 has very little recoil. Breaks down easy for cleaning, has adjustable target rear sight, and a great trigger. No modifications needed.

That's been my thinking as well. Start with my VQ LLV. If I patch with that then switch to my Wilson Combat Beretta 92 or my Springfield Prodigy, both shoot exceptionally well.
Although I did visit a local shop today and they had a Taurus TX22 Competition with the whole tandemcross package installed with a vortex venom red dot on consignment. Looked very nice! 👍
