Hey everyone,

An ammo expert I am not.  Hoping you could help me out.

I have a guy at my range that says he has a bunch of Chinese surplus in sealed cans of 300 rounds that he's had stored for at least a decade.  Said he'd sell a can for $90.  Thirty cents a round sounds pretty good to me nowadays, but I know nothing of it.  My stock-up supply has been South African and that's about all I'm used to.  Is Chinese surplus good stuff?  Junk?  Any opinions?

Thanks.

Oh, how I miss that Chinese ammo.  Less than $2 per box in its heyday.
I highly recommend Chinese.
My experience with Chinese commercial 5.56 , surp 7.62x39 ball ammo, commercial 7.62x39, and surp 7.62x54r ball is very positive, and makes me rue the Clinton importation ban.  Expect quality to be good/great.  9x19 mm brass-not so good; loose primer pockets.  9mm Mak- outstanding.
Mil spec ball is usually corrosive (not to mention un-importable); that might be the case with the 7.62x51 also.
Most likely the 7.62x51 will be steel cased and of course berdan primed.
Chinese commercial ammo is usually non corrosive.

Buy it all!!!!! ;D   Seriously......

Is this in galvanized steel cans with a D-ring and large tear off soldered on, and a cheap web carry handle?

On 7.62 X 51 NATO stripper clips?

I thought it was Indian, I have a couple of cans I have never opened.

I have a bunch of that.  It is corrosive, steel jacketed, lead core, copper washed.

There are a bunch of stripper clips loose in the can.

It will have some split necks, but shoots fine.

Loose primer pockets, split necks? OK to shoot?

Is this in galvanized cans with the opening soldered shut and a handle of cheap cotton web attached to the can?  Is it on stripper clips for the M14, etc.?

I have a couple of cans of the description I just gave, but I have not opened them and are not sure if they are Chinese or the vile Indian stuff.

Sorry about that, for some reason only the first few posts showed up until AFTER I posted to it, THEN I could see the other posts, including my original higher in the thread.

I just ran through the last of my Norinco stuff at the Toccoa AS this weekend.  My FAL ran 101% with it.

I only had one stoppage.  It was with a mag that had some red tape on it.  Now I remember WHY it had the red tape on it.  Weak follower spring.  $$-0,

Good stuff.  Wish I had more.

A couple of years ago Hollywood brought a newly built .308 M1 to Ramseur and was shooting some strange (almost pinkish red) looking Chinese surplus 7.62X51 ammo in it.  It ran fine and hit fine, steel cases, Chinese and all.
