I may have opined that the reason we teach MOA at Appleseed is that there are two kinds of countries; those that use the metric system and those who have landed men on the moon.

Quote from: Mrs. Smith on March 04, 2024, 09:47:02 AMEvery few years we post this on the Facebook page on Christmas Eve  :cool2:

https://imgur.com/a/wJ76gtY

I know that we're having fun with memes, and I fully support that fact.  However, for anyone interested . . .

I actually have this laminated and stored in my Appleseed binder, and I use it sometimes as one of my benedictions.

I read the meme; show the picture.  It gets a lot of laughs.  Then we talk about the situation the soldiers found themselves only a few days later on 12/31/1776.  The vast, vast majority of soldiers being days away from ending their service.  Sick.  Starving.  Bare-footed in the snow.  Just plain worn out.  George Washington makes a plea for re-enlistment, and no one responds.  I don't know if I can blame those men.  So Washington makes one final appeal (this works best when memorized):

"My brave fellows, you have done all I asked you to do, and more than can be reasonably expected; but your country is at stake, your wives, your houses and all that you hold dear. You have worn yourselves out with fatigues and hardships, but we know not how to spare you. If you will consent to stay one month longer, you will render that service to the cause of liberty, and to your country, which you probably can never do under any other circumstances."

About half the men volunteered, and Washington won Princeton.  As a result, there was renewed interest in the revolution.  Enlistments came pouring in.

All because Americans are too darn stubborn, stupid or both to know when we've clearly been beaten.  And as a result, we win.  We're not half as beaten now as they were then, and we have things more than twice as good.  Now isn't the time to stop fighting for the hearts and minds of our Americans, to return to them a love of liberty.

It tends to be one of my better-received benedictions.

C'mon folks - the milliradian ain't metric, being a ratio, the mil is unit independant!  The (easy) math is the same whether your working in yards, meters, furlongs, or light years.  Why hate on a system that makes a rifleman's job easier?

azmule is right. We should hate on the metric system for different reasons. Like nobody who uses it has landed on the moon for instance.  ;D

Ignoring of course, that NASA uses it, and used it to land on the moon.  In fact, we crashed a probe into Mars specifically because somebody screwed up and used non-metric units, thinking it was a metric number.

Actually, if we are being technical, NASA landed on the moon on July 16, 1969 with the Apollo program which used the US customary units most of us are familiar with. Many calculations were done in metric, however they were converted into US customary units.

NASA would switch to the Metric system the next year in 1970.  ;)
