Setup Question - Forward Sling Mount Orientation

Working on setting my pair of rifles. One is AR style, the other is traditional with M-LOK slots for QD adapter mounts.

What is the optimal mounting orientation for the forward sling mount or what AS teaches? The 6 o'clock or 3/9 o'clock position?

Looking back at USGI rifles, the M14 and M16 had their mounts in the 6 o'clock position. The M4 I trained on was at the 9 o'clock position. The M27 is at the 9 and it looks like other modern carbines are at the 9.

While the 9 can certainly be worked with, the 6 o'clock position is going to be friendlier to how we use a sling.  And more comfortable.

I hope that helps.

I prefer 6 O'Clock, the side mounts tend to make the rifle can't when they are pulled tight.

6 o'clock is my preference. My SKS has the sling mount at 9 o'clock and with a tight sling in position, it has a tendency to cant the rifle as it recoils. It is better than no sling at all but not as stable as a 6 o'clock mount would be.
I don't always shoot AQT's, but when I do, I prefer iron sights.

Great, thanks all for the input! That simplifies and standardizes things.

Offering an alternative to the excellent advice given: If you plan to regularly carry your AR 'patrol' style, consider getting used to the sling being mounted at the 9 o'clock. The USGI sling won't allow you to actually carry the rifle patrol style, but if IF you decide to use a different marksmanship/precision sling where you CAN carry that way, you'll already have solid experience dealing with the cant and recoil issues.

Hi Dave,

For AS Shooting with AR's, I mount the QD at 6pm as far towards the muzzle as possible.  I've got another AR rifle with 9pm QD's and when shooting at AS with USGI sling, the sling changes the POI about 2-MOA towards the sling side.

I hope this helps!
